A new report from a prominent Ottawa attorney has concluded that Luc Sabourin — the Canadian border intelligence whistleblower who says he was threatened at his Gatineau home by a Sinaloa cartel-linked gangster and later pressured out of his career after refusing an order to destroy roughly 1,000 foreign passports — faced “a pattern of workplace conflict and retaliation.” And his case remains unresolved, the report finds, for a reason that should alarm every Canadian: the independent oversight body Parliament created in 2024 to investigate exactly such allegations has still not been brought into force.

“What the facts reveal in the legal analysis of the Sabourin report is that at least six agencies or parts of government failed to not only fulfil their responsibilities — obligation to act — but also their obligation to account for how they fulfilled that obligation,” said Pamela Forward.
“Worse — what emerges is a picture of a system set up to facilitate the evasion of adequate acting and answering,” she added.
At the center of the report is a legislative failure that Doody calls “highly unusual.”
In 2024, Parliament passed the Public Complaints and Review Commission Act, which received Royal Assent on October 31 of that year. The law creates, for the first time, an independent review body with jurisdiction over the Canada Border Services Agency — an agency that, uniquely among Canada’s major security institutions, has operated for two decades with no external watchdog.
But the government has never proclaimed the law into force.
“The oversight agency exists only on paper and has no operational authority,” the report finds. “No Commission has been established, no members have been appointed, and no operational framework exists. The legislation remains dormant.”

A former employee of the Southern Poverty Law Center has been arrested in California on charges that she oversaw secret payments to informants inside of White supremacist groups, one of whom she was allegedly living with and had a romantic relationship with at the time.
The woman, Heidi Beirich, previously ran the SPLC’s project tracking hate groups in the US. The Justice Department has alleged that the program, which is no longer running, defrauded donors who did not realize they were helping to pay individuals inside the same groups that the SPLC aimed to root out.
Beirich allegedly “oversaw payments of donors’ money” to people inside of these hate groups, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday. She also allegedly shared a bank account with one of those sources, which included funds from the SPLC’s payments.

I’ve noticed that political party lines are becoming increasingly blurred these days, and not just in Canada. Are we getting to the point where we don’t have many real choices any more, or is that just the way it’s always been?

In June, through $750 million in investments, it took minority equity stakes in two semiconductor companies. In July, through up to $874 million in additional funding, it took minority equity stakes in six more and increased its ownership of a seventh. The Cato Institute counts 30 companies in the federal government’s expanded corporate portfolio. “Republicans warning that communists are taking over the Democratic Party might first ask why their own administration is so eager to have the government acquire pieces of private companies,” Cato analyst Tad DeHaven suggested.
2026 Website Security Fundraiser
Most of the time, site administration runs smoothly here. I check email alerts, clean out the spam account signups, check the dashboard for failed logins — that sort of thing.
Aaaand then some of the time, it doesn’t. Not at all. That few minutes of morning routine turns into hours, and then days, of back and forth with tech support from multiple providers.
Back in June, SDA began puking up bad connections and resource limit warnings. Our traffic stats crashed and then froze. The hosting company diagnosed “ai bot traffic” and recommended Cloudflare to take the load off the server.
You know about Cloudflare — it’s a big tech expert company that measures your humanity.
So, upon the advice of experts I purchased a Cloudflare plan. This immediately broke the site good and hard.
Dealing with Cloudflare support required a heroic act of restraint on my part when, after days of failed fixes, the ticket was elevated, and a higher level tech arrived to “take over the case”.
I thanked him, before reminding Mr. Al-High Level it had been his case all along and closing the account.
To cut a long and ridiculous story short, our newish hosting company (they inherited SDA when they bought out Hosting Matters) then thought to check our traffic stats.
“Oh”.
They had “inherited” a site that served 5.7M visits and pushed 1.19 TB of bandwidth since January. Well, that was new information! This resulted in a phone meeting with the host company’s owner and tech team, real people, for which I am genuinely grateful.
So, now we have a higher $$ plan. It’s not a heavy lift financially, but it does double the hosting fees we enjoyed for nearly two decades. That, combined with the security plan renewal, means that it’s fundraising time again.
We only do this once a year, and you all contribute far more than required to cover our costs, for which I’m also grateful. As I wrote last year at this time, “The business model of SDA has always been “this blog runs on the volunteer effort of people who enjoy yelling at radios, but your donations are appreciated”.
