The Southern Poverty Law Center allegedly paid at least three people who wanted to leave the white supremacist movement not to do so, according to the Justice Department’s superseding indictment handed down Tuesday.

A federal grand jury in April had indicted the SPLC on charges of wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy to conceal money laundering. The SPLC has pleaded not guilty to the charges. […]

The superseding indictment alleges that the “field sources” used the money from the Southern Poverty Law Center to grow extremist groups.

Field sources used the money to attend and host “extremist group rallies”; grow and create “new chapters of extremist groups”; recruit new members; donate to extremist group leaders; “purchase materials for cross burnings; purchase materials to make Ku Klux Klan robes and hoods”; and more.

One of the field sources, identified as “F-9,” reportedly had a romantic relationship with an SPLC employee. F-9 infiltrated the neo-Nazi organization National Alliance and received $140,000 from the SPLC. F-9 shared bank accounts with the SPLC employee, who used the cash to pay for the couple’s personal living expenses.

The chief of cardiac surgery at the Jewish General Hospital has tendered his resignation and plans to move to Atlanta in September, citing rising antisemitism in Montreal and worsening problems with the province’s health-care system, The Gazette can reveal.

Dr. Emmanuel Moss, who has worked at the Jewish General for the past 10 years, has already informed his patients and his synagogue of his imminent move to the United States. Moss’s departure from Montreal marks the second high-profile Montreal Jew — after Concordia University professor Gad Saad — to decide this spring to quit the city amid a sharp increase in documented antisemitic incidents in the past three years.

During a May 12 appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Saad announced he accepted a post at the University of Mississippi, where he had already worked as a scholar during a two-year leave of absence from Concordia. He spoke of death threats he received while at Concordia, saying, “I’m now leaving in large part because it became difficult for me, if not impossible, to be a high-profile Jewish professor who supports the right of Israel to exist.” […]

Reached by phone, Moss declined to give an interview or to explain his reasons for leaving Montreal. But sources close to Moss confirmed that he and his family had grown disillusioned with growing antisemitism in Montreal and what they viewed as a failure by authorities to crack down on incidents of Jew hatred — from physical assaults on Jews to vandalism of Jewish-owned businesses and the firebombing of synagogue entrances, as well as the firing of bullets at a yeshiva.

A leading figure in the UK Sikh federation has told the BBC the community has been “demonised” after a university student was killed by a Sikh man using a religious knife.

As someone who could never stand Stephen Colbert’s overtly partisan, sanctimonious political cheerleading for more than a couple of seconds, I don’t think that any new void is being created by his departure; there was nothing but a void to begin with.

Among those sorry to see Colbert go is astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, a frequent guest. Johnny Carson used to book scientists, but Tyson notes wryly that not many TV hosts do these days.

Brehm saw Colbert make himself into a sort of moral authority and lean into the social justice camp of progressive Catholics: “He is playing up that moral quality by standing up for American moral values like freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and he’s doing it with a Catholic jargon, with Catholic language.”
