Le Syndrome De Stockholm

As a Manitoban, sometimes I console myself with the knowledge that at least I don’t live in Quebec. Over there, the party that champions the cause of government inspectors telling you how to spell hamburger is trying to assure Anglophones that there’s really nothing to worry about if you vote for them.

“Underneath that pledge is also the fact the anglos don’t fear the PQ any more since anglos and francos share the same realities and concerns. Public discourse has too often encouraged the mistaken belief that the concerns of French-speaking and English-speaking Quebecers are fundamentally at odds.

    1. No, ALberta is about to find out what Ottawa is willing to do to “rogue” provinces. Maybe low level lawfare or the bribing and use of first nations will do the trick. Or maybe it’s already too late; there is a LOT of diversity in Alberta, dontcha know.

  1. “…the mistaken belief that the concerns of French-speaking and English-speaking Quebecers are fundamentally at odds.”

They will march the Anglos out of the province if they can. Because they are SOCIALISTS, and that’s how they roll.

    1. I’m not sure what socialists have against the English? French-Canadian racists hate the English. That’s why it’s a waste of time expecting decent treatment from the French if they have the right politics. The French Canadian nation as a whole has embraced racism. Political values, even real interests, have nothing to do with it.

      1. The Acadians refused to pledge allegiance in time of war. They deserved everything they got, And what they got included the right to go home and live happily in peace, so I don’t see that they were in any way hard done by.

  2. I remember René Lévesque covering his face when a delegate said the quiet part out loud. “Once we’re independent the anglophones will have the right to speak French!”

  3. Equality of ignorance is nothing to celebrate.
    “Let’s go for a coffee! Alberta’s buying.”

  4. The Quebec provincial election will be in 2 months, the PQ are barely leading though last autumn they were 20 points ahead until the provincial #Libranos Party leader resigned, so it could change in the final charge…
Polling for Quebec separation is about 69:31 to stay +/- 5 points and the PQ have promised they’ll have a referendum on this issue within 2 years of being elected.

I hope the PQ win, but don’t accept being told by gov’t how to spell “burger”

  6. I think that now they’ve been overrun by Haitians and muslims the anglo/franco divide doesn’t seem all that much of an issue anymore.

Kinda like in Ireland where a new IRA has declared war on migrants. I bet there isn’t any Proddie/Catholic animosity in the new IRA.

    1. Exactly. I wouldn’t worry too much about anglophones in Quebec either. Anglo families have lived there for generations and still can’t or won’t speak a word of French. Nobody cares.

      1. More than 90% percent of English-speaking Quebeckers speak French routinely every day. Everyone whose ancestors have been there for generations has always learned French. The post-war generation that settled in Montreal and never learned French is long since gone now.

These people don’t mind speaking French. They object to being forbidden to speak English. If the French Canadians showed a scrap of decency or sense there’d be no problem.

        1. “Everyone whose ancestors have been there for generations has always learned French.”

My mom’s side of the family have been in Quebec for hundreds of years. They’re Scots Irish.
          None of them speak French.
My father’s side of the family have been in Quebec for hundreds of years. They’re Quebecois.
None of them speak French either. 🙂

          1. Congratulations! You’re a freak. God bless you and keep you, but you are utterly unrepresentative of English Quebec.
