What We Really Need Is Democracy

With a totalitarian party to vote for….

Officials of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s leading Islamic group, have called for the establishment of a Saudi-style modesty police to combat “immoral” behavior in public areas in what observers say in another sign of a growing Islamic self-confidence in the post-Mubarak era.
In the political sphere, the Brotherhood led a successful drive to get voters to approve a package of constitutional amendments. On the street level, at least 20 attacks were perpetrated against the tombs of Muslim mystics (suffis), who are the subject of popular veneration but disparaged by Islamic fundamentalists, or salafis. After some initial hesitation, Islamic leaders have publicly praised the revolution.

This Is My Brother Mohammed, And This Is My Other Brother Mohammed

You know, we could solve a lot of problems in this old world if, every time a car went up in smoke in Paris, Volvo owners took to the streets to behead imams.

“A mob of deranged ululating blood-lusting head-hackers slaughter Norwegian female aid-workers and Nepalese guards — and we’re the ones with the problem?”

Maxed Out Mama – Ya know, I think it might have more to do with the “Kill Team” photos and also the long-running UN flap over defamation of religion. Some background. Something momentous happened at the UN Human Rights council in late March…
You know, we could solve a lot of problems in this old world if someone reminded Karzai that’s he’s always one unscheduled midnight helicopter drop from a “handover” of the Presidency.

Then killings broke out in Afghanistan — but, so far, nowhere else. Why Afghanistan? How did the Afghans know about it? Well, it appears that President Karzai told them. Why did he do that? Perhaps because it might give him some leverage in negotiations with America.

Canadian Position On Goldstone Report Vindicated

By Goldstone.

Canada’s oft-criticized rejection of the tainted United Nations Fact Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, known as the Goldstone Report, has been vindicated.
In a Washington Post article, the report’s author Justice Richard Goldstone repudiates both the report itself and its sponsor, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), for being inherently biased against Israel. In the column, Goldstone wrote: “If I had known then what I know now, the Goldstone Report would have been a different document.” Referring to Israeli actions during the war, Goldstone noted that “civilians were not intentionally targeted as a matter of policy.”

But as his key function was “useful idiot”, don’t expect to hear much about it in the mainstream.

The Report issued by Richard Goldstone on the Gaza war is the single most influential document in the arsenal of those around the world — including on campuses in the United States — who seek to demonize and delegitimize Israel. That Goldstone is Jewish gave supposed credibility to accusations against Israel, and insulated the process from claims of anti-Semitism.

More here.
“In January 2009, Canada was the sole UNHRC member to vote against the commissioning of the Goldstone Mission. Canada also opposed the UNHRC endorsement of the report on Oct. 16, 2009.” h/t

‘Jets, Jails and Corporate Tax Cuts’

The Liberal slogan for this election is starting to annoy me. The ‘Jails’ part is fine, they believe in hug-a-thug and I believe that incarceration is supposed to be about revenge and not rehabilitation.
Corporate Tax cuts. Really? The same stuff that was passed in the budgets two and three years ago? The cuts that business has been planning for, expanding for, taking out loans in expectation of? The Liberals do realize that corporations and banks aren’t like them, right? Business can’t just arbitrarily change focus and direction everytime a new leader is elected.
And as for Jets, well, I think we all know what happens when the Liberals get their callous-free hands on military procurements.

Just saying their slogan could have used some thought, I think.

Vitruvius’s Experimental Election Predictor

Recension 3.3.2 of Vitruvius’s Experimental Election Predictor is
available at The Sagacious Iconoclast. The Conservative Party of Canada
is currently polling at ΣVe/n = 9.16, which historically translates into the
range of 153 to 181 seats, depending (as explained via the link) on how
one interpolates previous election results.

Update at 20:00: Folks have asked me for more information on how I arrived at the seat projections described above. To that end I have added a new chart to the end of my Ve page that shows how to convert from a Ve value to the historic range of seat projections, and have slightly adjusted the seat projections shown above, like this:
