Good Luck With That Strathcona Seat, Jack
Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
Jack Layton, March 26th – “Because here in Edmonton, everybody knows, only New Democrats defeat Conservatives,”
Jack Layton, March 31st – “Under Stephen Harper, every single Quebecker is sending roughly $75 a year to subsidize dirty fossil fuel producers”.
I’ve got an email in to Grant McMurray to ask him what he meant by that.
A reply!
I have forwarded your request to our campaign team. I am busy with other aspects of the campaign and not with following the media.
Hope that helps,
Grant
Find Your Liberal Candidate
Continued.…
I live in James Moore’s riding of Port Moody-Weswood-Port Coquitlam, and wondered who the Liberal candidate is, and discovered there isn’t one. I thought that odd. It also seemed that there sure weren’t many Liberals running in BC. So I started checking out who is running for the Liberals in every region across the country. According to the Liberals’ website, they are only running 229 candidates in 308 ridings. In fact, unless I’ve made a serious error somewhere, I’ve found that the only province that the Liberals are running a full-slate of candidates is New Brunswick!
Here are the numbers I’ve found. The Liberals of running in:
19 of 36 ridings in BC
14 of 28 in Alberta
8 of 14 in Saskatchewan
7 of 14 in Manitoba
101 of 106 in Ontario
50 of 75 in Quebec
10 of 10 in New Brunswick
10 of 11 in Nova Scotia
3 of 4 in PEI
6 of 7 in Newfoundland
0 of 1 in the Yukon
1 of 1 in the NWT
0 of 1 in Nunavut
Why is the media not talking about this?
Because it requires math, is my guess.
Update – here’s a useful site, thanks to dizzy, in the comments.

Harper by the Numbers
Terence Corcoran on Harpernomics…
The ordinary voter – who is reluctantly dragged to the polls every few years – pays scant attention to political affairs and virtually none to public policy. A half digested series of symbols and impressions fill out their understanding of our government’s role and its operations. The Conservatives (team blue) are the party of fiscal restraint, giving big business a free reign and criminals a hard knock. They are the party of hard practicality. The daddy party as some American commentators have dubbed their Republicans counterparts down south.
The NDP (team orange) are the party of idealistic granola chomping hippies, mouthing happy utopian pleasantries about social justice and being sorry for the poor and weak. The Liberals (team red) are the party of compromise. Some hard practicality (like balancing the budget during the Chretien-Martin era) matched with promises to help the poor and weak, and some nice freebies for the middle class (i.e. “average hardworking Canadian families”). Stephen Harper has successfully convinced enough of the Central Canadian middle class – through bland rhetoric and targeted tax credits – that the Conservatives are now the party of compromise…
It is a law of modern politics that you betray your base and flatter your enemies…

But Glenn Beck Is The Crazy One
Which is why, most of all, I hope President Obama is lucky. I hope Qaddafi’s regime collapses like a sand castle, that the Libyan opposition turns out to be decent and united and that they require just a bare minimum of international help to get on their feet. Then U.S. prestige will be enhanced and this humanitarian mission will have both saved lives and helped to lock another Arab state into the democratic camp.
Dear Lord, please make President Obama lucky.

Picking The Losing Side In France’s War For Oil
Is there nothing that Obama can’t do?
The incoherence and the disingenuous of the talk of the end game here is appalling. Obama himself had said Qaddafi has to go. Then he gives a speech last night in which he says regime change is not a military objective.
Then a day later in London — here’s a dispatch from the New York Times, I’ll contract it a bit — “The leaders of the countries meeting in London today made clear that the NATO-led military operation in Libya would end only with the removal of Qaddafi.,” Which contradicts what the president said last night.
And we aren’t even near the end game. We’re in the middle game here. The rebels aren’t just thwarted at the gates of Sirte. They have been thrown back, lost two towns today, one being Ras Lanuf, the second time they lost [that] oil port in one week. It tells you that the rebels without close air support are no match for Qaddafi.
So to speak of an end game in which Qaddafi is now on the march is absurd. …They’re [the rebel forces] going the wrong way. They’re going east instead of west.
But it ain’t over ’til it’s over! – President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel forces seeking to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, government officials told Reuters on Wednesday.
I repeat – get our pilots out of there.

The Liberal Party of Canada Broadcasting Corporation
Further to Kate’s post on the developing scandal at the CBC, watch this:
Here’s what some of the main protagonists had to say when this, erm, educational tool was unveiled with great fanfare during last Sunday’s national news broadcast.
Reporter Paul Hunter:
“Politicians will have to take note…after all, CBC News will be reporting the (Vote Compass) results throughout the campaign.”
CBC News Editor In Chief Jennifer McGuire:
“As a public broadcaster we have an obligation around engaging Canadians in democracy…(Vote Compass) is a learning tool, you get to have insight into the actual party platforms…”
Cliff van der Linden, one of the four University of Toronto graduate students who, along with “some of Canada’s top political academics,” spent months preparing Vote Compass:
“People might be surprised at where they end up….they voted a certain way all their lives, and then, suddenly, they answer these questions truthfully and honestly, and at the end of the day, maybe they’re closer to another party.”
Update – From the comments;
I watched the video and went through the survey questions. The video’s methodology does not conclusively show bias, but it does demonstrate that something is amiss with the “compass” and that it is not to be trusted. I do not have access to the “compass” source code, so I can only guess how its analysis engine was implemented based on the methodology used in the video.
Is there a simple algorithmic explanation for why no matter which button the user always clicked, that the “answer” always came out as “Liberal”? I think there is. After reading through the questions, it appears that there are approximately an equal number of “positive” and “negative” questions that effectively cancel each other out. I expect that I am not being the most clear (and frankly I am having difficulty coming up with the phrases I need).
In an attempt to better describe the situation I am trying to explain (rather poorly I expect), imagine the following …
For type A questions, let the strongly disagree, somewhat disagree, neither, somewhat agree and strongly agree map to -2, -1, 0, +1, and +2 respectively. For type B questions, let them instead map to +2, +1, 0, -1, and -2. If there are an equal number of type A and type B questions (say conservative slant and liberal slant), then always clicking the same button will lead to a sum of 0.
If all the clicks were thus summed, then likely each party would be given a range of values that mapped to them. Assuming this is the algorithm that was used, then it would appear that anything that adds up to near zero would fall under the liberal “compass” point.
If that were the algorithm that was used, then I think that could explain the observed “bias”. I have not determined the distribution curve of sums, but my gut tells me that most will be near zero–and whatever party has been designated as the “sums near zero” will pop up as the answer most often.
Again, assuming that this was the algorithm, if this is deliberate, then there is bias. If it is not, then the developer who wrote this code ought to be slapped upside the head for failing to think.
Update – this is also very good.
