As a tribute to birthday boy Bob Dylan, who, at 70 years old, is preparing for yet another grueling tour, here’s a selection of a few of the songs from his remarkable 50-year musical career: From the 1965 album “Bringing It All Back Home”, here’s the wake-up call It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue. From the 1975 album “Blood On The Tracks”, Simple Twist Of Fate, Tangled Up In Blue, and one of my all-time favourites, Buckets Of Rain. From the 1989 Daniel Lanois-produced album “Oh Mercy”, here’s the elegiac and touching Shooting Star. Finally, h/t Mick Hartley, here’s Irish singer Sinéad_Lohan’s lovely cover version of Dylan’s 1964 song To Ramona.

  2. Frankly, I think Dylan shoulda quit touring decades ago. His voice is terrible now and he hasn’t done anything good since the 60s. Anyone attending his concerts is advised to take earplugs.

  7. The most over rated artist in history in my opinion. Saw him live a few years ago. He played with his back to the crowd all night. Didn’t recognize any of his ‘hits’. Felt like we were disturbing an otherwise peaceful evening. I wanted my money back.

  11. An idea put forward by a number of Scientists is gaining momentum. The idea is to add lithium, to curb suicides and depression, into the drinking water like fluoride was/is. The theory is, that being exposed over a lifetime to trace amounts of lithium should improve brain connectivity thereby reducing suicides and depression.
    Lithium causes dehydration and serious kidney complications as well as birth defects in pregnant women, yet scientists maintain the benefits will out weigh the risks.

  13. Well, I am unalterably opposed to medicating the population by way of the drinking water supply, but lithium is indeed a natural element, and not particularly rare in the Earth’s crust.

  17. A “striking” student interviewed today pointed out that “The teachers should get more money because they, like, teach us knowledge …” I guess so.
    Interestly enough, when the STF was asked to give assurances that teachers would not carry out work stoppages to the point of hindering final exams, the reply was that if parents and students were so concerned then perhaps they should address these concerns to the government.
    These arrogant, entitled and greedy extortionists can repeat over and over again how everything is for the children, however it just doesn’t fly anymore as they continue their selfish strikes during such a crucial time in the school year.

  20. Speedy – I felt awkward just watching. Perhaps he is going for sympathy votes; I mean I almost feel sorry for him. First he dates the guest book May 24, 2008 and now this. If he’s smart he’ll blame/spin it on his concern – grief for those devastated by the recent tornadoes back home.

    OTTAWA—Scrapping public subsidies of federal political parties will be a key plank of the Conservatives’ revised budget, which will be unveiled June 6 on Parliament Hill, the Star has learned.
    Stephen Harper’s new government, elected just last month, intends to move fast on its election vow to end the $2-a-vote annual subsidy, which pumps $27 million a year into party coffers.
    The Conservatives have long opposed the measure and now armed with a majority mandate, they have the political heft to finally axe the subsidy.
    *NDP MP Pat Martin said the Tories are determined to end the subsidies to “drive a stake through the heart of the Liberal party.”
    But he warned there will be “collateral damage.
    “We’d be taking a huge step backwards if the Conservatives do go through with this to where big money will be able to buy politics. It will be a regressive step,” Martin said.
    *Liberal MP Marc Garneau, who is running for the interim Liberal leader’s job, said his party recognizes that the financial blow is going to hurt.
    “It’s going to hit us hard,” Garneau said. “We will be faced with a reality, not just the threat.”
    Liberals will, however, press for an increase in individual donation limits if Conservatives do end the subsidy, he said.
    “If individuals want to give more than the $1,100, that’s something that should be discussed,” he said.
    “I think it’s regrettable. We will vote against it, but given the fact that we can’t stop it, I think that one has to put that on the table as a possibility.”

    So when Sarkozy took the stage of the e-G8 this morning, suspicions about his true motives were already rampant. And he did little to dispel them.
