Election 2011: Have You Heard The One ‘Bout Izzy Hirji?
Well, the joke’s on you, Harper. Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
Toronto Star, 2011;
Izzy Hirji was one of several hundred students who gathered outside a Conservative Party campaign event in Guelph to encourage his young peers to get out and vote — for whomever they wanted — in the upcoming election.
The 22-year-old veterinary student at the University of Guelph was then kicked out of the event because he had been part of the peaceful mob, which party officials had apparently viewed as protesters.
That’s the tip of the iceberg. Great digging at The Black Rod.
Update – Izzy Hirji responds in the comments.

The Tolerant Left
(Bumped for JGL listeners. You can “listen live” at the link.)
This* audio tape (MP3) was allegedly recorded at the March 25-27 Saskatchewan NDP convention in Regina, the speaker alleged to be a well-known Saskatchewan labour lawyer.
Transcript:
“Bill 160 is probably one of the most — and I’ll use this term intentionally — evil acts being attempted by a government in Canadian history. It is the opinion of many, including Amnesty International, that Bill 160 is an attempt to take away our access to human rights. If there’s one issue – one issue – that politicians in power shouldn’t be allowed to get away with, they shouldn’t be left breathing after an election, if they think our human rights are meaningless.”
Strong words, particularly in the context of a speech delivered before an audience, and doubly so in this current atmosphere of hypersensitivity towards any form of political speech or symbolism that might be construed as counseling violence. After all, you never know what nuts might be listening.
Background – Bill 160 – An Act to amend The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code and to make consequential amendments to The Labour Standards Act
*Full disclosure: This is the only portion of the tape I curerntly have access to. If the speaker disclaimed his use of violent imagery as wholly inappropriate, or extended a big union hug towards the politicians referenced in followup comments, I’ll note that in an update.

“I think we’re in a very bad place when you’ve got a prime minister who does a background check on his audience, at a democratic crowd, and doesn’t seem to do a background check on the people he hires in the Prime Minister’s Office, like Mr. Carson.”

Shares of American Superconductor Corp (NasdaqGS:AMSC – News) plunged 41 percent in pre-market trade on Wednesday, a day after the maker of electrical systems for wind farms said it expected to post a loss for the fourth quarter as its largest customer refused to accept ready shipments.
Late on Tuesday, AMSC said Sinovel Wind (Shanghai:601558.SS – News), which accounts for about 75 percent of AMSC’s revenue, refused to accept March shipments, due to the slowdown in China’s wind power market.

Globe & Mail, April 5th – Tuesday’s announcement sent shock waves rippling across an industry that has spent vast sums of money to acquire land in the region. The prospect of having parts of it ripped away prompted one executive to compare Alberta to Venezuela, and to warn that any expropriation of land may frighten away investment crucial to developing one of Alberta’s most important economic resources.
Carlyle Observer, April 1st – [Saskatchewan] Finance Minister Ken Krawetz unveiled the budget in a cheerful mood, reporting spending will come in at $10.7 billion, while revenues are slated to round out at $10.8 billion. This sets the province up for a $115 million surplus in the general revenue fund covering the ministries. There is $54 million surplus expected for the summary accounts, which includes Crown corporations as well as ministries.
