  4. Ifn’ I was a Boeing flight test engineer, I’d want to be sure the company had a gazillion dollar life insurance policy for my family before I got on that plane during that test. No one notice they were forcing the brakes to nearly red heat with a FULL load of fuel? If any of those brake disks had fractured and flown into the belly tank, people on the plane would have been a shadow on a far wall…

    No it’s known as a “Pucker Stop”. A certain amount of vacuum from the seats is added.

  6. HEH….as a flight engineer…we do this shit all the time…no probs with the full fuel tanks…it has to vaporize before it goes boom…and have the proper fuel/air ratio…
    John…1,000,000 lbs AUW is minor now….27 years ago an Anotov 215 took off here(Edmonton) at 1.5 million AUW…only used 10,000′ of runway…direct to the Ukraine….biggest problem was maintaing C of G…as fuel burns off,it shifts,and if your AOA(angle of attack)is not right…welllllll…it ceases to fly….and yeah…bumblebees can’t fly either…according to the laws of aerodynamics…somebody better tell them before they hurt themselves!!!

    But in real life, I would decline to ride on that very potential brake/tire fire under full tanks.
    Tanks but no tanks. Likely a lot safer with full tanks rather than partial though.

  8. During certification testing there are even higher pucker-factor tests (from the flight crew perspective). They involve things like shutting engines down just before rotation (and still going airborne), or over-rotating to the point of striking the tail – on purpose. By the time a new aircraft type gets into the hands of the public, it has been exposed to pretty much every forseeable hazard

  10. I understand at Airbus, when a plane fails a test, everyone is trained to yell “Pilot error!” /sarc off
    (See the stories on the net regarding the recovered black boxes from the Air France plane that went down in the Atlantic a few years ago.)

  11. Awesome test, but, perhaps it’s an allegory of Obama’s treatment of Boeing?
    Boeing set up a plant in South Carolina and hired people (takeoff at 200mph), and now they’re being prevented from opening up (hitting the brakes during a bad economy).

  13. I recall my pucker-factor on my first ride on “fat albert”…..where normally, with smaller aircraft, the deck goes up on rotation and the tire noise ceases…the 747 goes quite a while before unsticking….C5’s do the same…something about Newton’s 1st law of motion and just shear blo***y mass….
    A wee bit un-nerving the first time….

    Allah willed it.
    Just like it will be his will when it takes off..this jet was foretold in the Koran!..Bow, Kuffars, to superior Islamic engineering!
