“The Canadians were really very adamant”

Via Gateway Pundit;

Canadian delegation blocks mention of 1967 lines in Group of Eight leaders’ joint statement calling Israel, Palestinians to return to peace talks.
Group of Eight leaders had to soften a statement urging Israel and the Palestinians to return to negotiations because Canada objected to a specific mention of 1967 borders, diplomats said on Friday.
Canada’s right-leaning Conservative government has adopted a staunchly pro-Israel position in international negotiations since coming to power in 2006, with Prime Minister Stephen Harper saying Canada will back Israel whatever the cost.
Diplomats involved in Middle East discussions at the G8 summit said Ottawa had insisted that no mention of Israel’s pre-1967 borders be made in the leaders’ final communiqué, even though most of the other leaders wanted a mention.
“The Canadians were really very adamant, even though Obama expressly referred to 1967 borders in his speech last week,” one European diplomat said.
A spokesman for Harper would not comment on the line Canada had taken, saying only that the final communiqué would make positions clear.

  1. Gosh I love Stephen Harper…..we need more spineless Western countries to stand up for Israel and to stop kissing Arab ass…..

  2. Dear Barry,
Screw you as*ho#le, your foreign policy is for dummies.
    Regards
    “Steve”
thank gawd we have a PM who will stand up to the morons supporting Palestinian terrorists . . .

  3. Thank goodness Canada has a spine. Any mention of Israel should also highlight the original 1948 intention that Palestine was to be east of the Jordan river and all lands to the west of it were to be the Jewish homeland. It’s not “Jordan”, it’s Palestine: Gaza & The West Bank were always meant to be part of Israel

  4. Of course, the lefties will be apoplectic because we are not in lockstep with American policy.

  5. Steven Harper will become the catalyst for decent forward thinking business minded Americans to come out to the voting boothes in droves next election, and punt out this mixed up man child that Oprah and her ilk “blessed” the USA with. If you look close at pictures of Obama, you see the strings Soros is pulling, kind of like old Martin Cretien and Turdoughs pictures with the Demarais family tugging like a Robaxacet ad.

    Funny how things change.
The problems with Obama’s speech were actually subtle but devolve to the following:
He specifically mentioned the 1967 lines which previous administrations did not.
He ignored Bush’s guarantee on close-in West Bank development in exchange for leaving Gaza.
He insisted that borders be fixed first. I.e. he gave away Israel’s main bargaining chip and left the Palestinians free to just go full bore on their main bargaining chip (refugees) because the borders would be set first.
Netanyahu essentially slimed him with the ’67 borders because technically Obama mentioned swaps. But Obama was applying slime in the first place so Bibi’s is a good kind of slime.

  7. It’s good to see that we don’t need a Security Council seat to have a major influence in the world arena.
Liberals must be delighted to see Canada take on the U.S. with an independent policy and to see our proud nation “punch above its weight!”

  8. I’m getting this warm, tingly feeling -what could it be?
    Could it be …
    Patriotism?
    Hell Yea, Canada ROCKS

  9. Bravo Prime Minister Harper!!
Thank you for showing the rest of these gutless weasels how a true friend treats their friends. The worst weasel being the fool in the White House.

  10. That should have been good for PM Harper @3:27.
Finally we have a Prime Minister that stands for something good.

  11. Can’t wait to hear from the NDP’s Jerk-Job Jack and THE Liberal’s Bob Rae about this!
Do they side with Israel and PM Harper, or with Palestinian terrorists? … decisions, decisions, what to do, what to do?
THANK MR. HARPER FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING AND SHOWING LINGUINI-SPINED LEFTISTS OF THE G8 WHAT REAL LEADERSHIP LOOKS LIKE!
God how I LOOOOOVE a Conservative MAJORITY!

  12. “Gaza & The West Bank were always meant to be part of Israel”
    No, they weren’t.
The 1947 UN partition plan would have put them in Palestinian Arab hands. But the point is entirely moot: the Palestinian Arabs rejected the plan (the Palestinian Jews accepted it) and, as a result of the subsequent 1948 war, the Egyptians nabbed Gaza and the Jordanians annexed the West Bank.
In effect, the Palestinian Arabs were (to paraphrase Charlie Sheen) “bi-losers”: they lost land to the new state of Israel and they lost the rest of their land to their own Arab “brothers”.

  13. This is good stuff. It must be tough to be the only thinking person in the room when everyone else yearns to drink barry’s bathwater.

  14. Serves O’s purpose anyway. HE gets to look like he tried and the Israeli’s get the result they wanted.
Obama wont have any issue with this, since he can look like he was tryong for the Palestineans.
Harper looks good for the constituency he needs and wants to look good for.
Everyone wins in the room of mirrors and illusions that is politics

  15. Bravo PMSH. Thank-you for standing up for Israel and the Jewish people who are our only friends in the ME. The President of the US is not speaking for the majority of American people OR the congress. Most of the latter know good from evil and they are on the side that our Prime Minister has taken.
PMSH, you have once again, made me very proud of the policy of our country. Thank-you for choosing the right side for Canada.

  16. From the comments at Gateway Pundit:
Go Harper!!! Americans are jealous of Canadians for they have a president that they can be proud of.
As an American, I can only add: True statement.

  17. Very good, but I’d rather just leave the damn G8 completely. They are vehicle of statism.

  18. What does Israel have to do with the G8?
I don’t see that the G8 should concern itself with the Israeli/Arab situation at all.
Which nation put Israel on the G8 aganda?

  19. Well done, PMSH. But let us not forget that the second biggest block of voters for the boy-god after blacks were Jews. Who the hell is confused here?

  20. It is great that our PM is pretty much the only person standing up for that little country surrounded by bigger countries wanting to wipe it out. The left, I doubt, will support our position. Now, if it was Bush in power and was taking the stance of Obama, the left would applaud our PM.

  21. You should read the Globe and Mail comments on this story; they are vitriolic in their hatred of Harper.

  22. Davers6 — Doesn’t really matter what Boob Rae and his non-existant party say. I do wonder what Taliban Jack is going to say.

  23. Well, you can accuse Ol’ Stephen of a lot of things….but suckin’ around for the immigrant vote ain’t one of them.
Been a long time since a Canadian PM had a bigger set than a Yankee Pres.

  24. That should stop the “puppet of America” rants for a while… naaa, logic is not the leftoid’s strong suit.

  25. Our Prime Minister supporting a liberal democracy in a sea of theo and thugocracies. Should be good for a Nobel Prize just like Pearson.

  26. What a strange feeling – being a citizen of a country that has SPINE!
It’s a feeling that is welcome and good!

  27. This is all acedemic anyway. There will never be peace no matter what you promise the terrorists.

  28. We fled dying Ontario (for booming Atlanta)during Bob Rae’s NDP fiasco in 1993. Now back in Canada since the first Harper Conservative govt in 2006.
Never in a million years would have thought I’d be THIS proud again to be Canadian, and never could have imagined America would elect such an unaccomplished, incompetent bozo as their Prez. Obama makes Jimmy Carter look positively Churchillian.
It proves once again that NOTHING is forever … except for the ‘glitter’ that is dusted on greeting cards, which will remain forever on your carpet and outlast the universe.

  29. ‘Audacity Of Hope’ is the name of a Gaza flotilla boat going out for the next show. In other news, Syria just shot to death 500 protesters…. Where’s da boat mon?

  30. Our commendable resolve will be fast eroded by the 200,000 followers of a certain 7th century moon cult we bring in per year.
Stop mass immigration from islamo countries.

  31. Palestine has no legal right to the land, it belonged to the Turks and not the fake state of Palestine.

  32. Never in my many years of voting have I been prouder of our government then I am after reading this entry. Go for it Mr. Harper, make the European leaders and Obama look like the cowards and weak kneed liberals that they are.

  33. Please stand and raise your glass in a toast to Prime Minister Harper. L’Chayim.

  34. Canada taking a major role at the G-8 meeting because of Stephen Harper leadership is impressive. At last, we have a
    statesman at the helm.
President Obama’s naivite´ may lead to another Mideast war
of Muslim nations attacking Israel. The North African “Arab
Spring” is turning into a nightmare, and becoming an existential crisis for the Coptic Christians in Egypt, a population who were there hundreds of years before the Mohammedans.

“Gaza & The West Bank were always meant to be part of Israel”
    No, they weren’t.
The 1947 UN partition plan would have put them in Palestinian Arab hands………
……, as a result of the subsequent 1948 war, the Egyptians nabbed Gaza and the Jordanians annexed the West Bank.”
Actually, it was not even as tidy as that. The UN plan was a complicated patchwork that included Nablus, in the West Bank, as a Jewish enclave and East Jerusalem as well.
The final areas were Israeli, Eygptian and Jordanian.
“In effect, the Palestinian Arabs were (to paraphrase Charlie Sheen) “bi-losers”: they lost land to the new state of Israel and they lost the rest of their land to their own Arab “brothers”.
Worse than that the “Palestinians” were confined to defacto concentration camps(refuggee camps) in their own land.
If Isreal had lost the 1948 war…there not only would be no Israel but no independant Palestine.
Arab ME countries are indifferent to Palestinians and regard them as trash….always have. They are treated as sand bags and a festering open wound to further their long time goal of eradicating Israel.
Very few “Palestinians” have any ancestry to Palestine but are lower class migrants from all over the ME especially Eygpt and Yemen.
The claims of land ownership are also largely bogus. Most arabs prior to the influx of the Jews in the early 19th century were tenants of absentee landlords….who sold out to the Jewish newcomers.
I pointed this out to a “Palestinian”…his response: “See See..You understand! That’s how the Jews stole our land…they bought it.”
Okaaay…according to that logic we all drive stolen cars……

  36. “See See..You understand! That’s how the Jews stole our land…they bought it.”
Yes, the Palestinians are quick to conflate the concept of private land ownership with that of national territory.
As if my purchase of a villa in Tuscany makes the land it’s on somehow part of Canada.

  37. vangrungy – hmm. Did you know that the halakhah rules of Judaism also forbid Jews selling land to a Muslim? Bet you didn’t know that.
Rose – if the land belonged to the Turks, then, the Israelis don’t have any ‘right’ to the land either.
Since when is land sovereignty inviolate? Can’t it change?
And there’s no such thing as a ‘fake’ or ‘non-fake’ state in an essentialist sense. Nations are political constructs and as such, their legitimacy is by political and legal edicts.

  38. Nice to see Harper assume the mantle of the leader of the Anglosphere whilst Obama takes the Kenyonsphere or the muslisphere.
