Welcome to Memorial Day weekend in much of the West.
The traditional kickoff of the summer season will have a decidedly wintry feel in the Rocky Mountains, as well as California’s Sierra Nevada, because of a lingering record snowfall.
Epic snowpack in parts of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and California is forcing many tourists to abandon the annual rites of launching their summer holidays with a camping trip. Others plan to take advantage of prolonged skiing and showshoeing this strange spring.
In Denver, Brooke Schmidgall had her sights set on high-country camping this weekend as she shopped for gear at a sporting goods store.
“I’ll bring my snowshoes,” she said. “We have a big family tent. It will be nice and warm.”

The Bridger-Teton National Forest Avalanche Center is fully staffed to warn outdoors enthusiasts.
“May snow depths are deeper than anything we have seen in the last 45 years,” said avalanche center spokesman Bob Comey.

Get with the program, Kate. It isn’t “global warming”, it’s “climate change”. May blizzards, killer tornados, record drought in Texas, severe acne — it doesn’t matter what crap hits the fan –it’s all our fault. Got it?
Five inches of rain so far this week in Okotoks, Ab. and still raining. That plus the mountain snow melt equals….a whole bunch of water coming down our Sheep River.
If this snowfall happened in winter, it would be easy to square with global warming. Warmer=more moisture=more snow. It’s the timing that ruins the narrative here.
Snow on one side the US , blazing heat in the southeast and tornadoes in the middle. It is wacky but we can blame La Nina more than anything to do with AGW(Anthroprogenic Global Warming)
Love it, but Zog nails it. It does not matter what happens it is because of global warming. Have to keep the gravy train filled with cash.
Hey Altaguy, we could use a little rain here north of Saskatoon. Maybe 1/2″ or so.
Ken, I’m doing a rain dance as we speak, Sask style, Old Style in one hand and a gopher getter firing randomly skyward in the other hand, to send it your way. After 6 months of cold winter here,5.5 inches of rain in 3 days, and now snow at 4500 feet south west of Okotoks, I’ve had it with globull warming. Hardly turned a wheel or a track and I’m sure hurtin. Meanwhile Gore and Suzuker are eating caviar thanks to stupid lefties and gullible polititians filling their pockets on our backs. Remember Lorne Culvert subsidizing Gores speech in Regina not long ago, what fools the believers in this SCAM are.
will Al be joining them on the slopes?
…and people wonder why I drink so much…
52 feet fell at Whistler this year – some of that this week.
I took some relatives up to Whistler-Blackcomb yesterday. Just 5 days left to go in May and it was FRIGID!!!
In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment.
The woman apologized to him and explained, “We didn’t have the ‘green thing’ back in my day”.
The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment.”
He was right, that generation didn’t have the green thing in its day.
Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over.
So they really were recycled. But they didn’t have the green thing back in that customer’s day.
In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building.
They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.
But she was right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.
Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the throw-away kind.
They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind and solar power really did dry the clothes.
Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.
But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.
Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana .
In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you.
When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap.
Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power.
They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.
But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.
They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water.
They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.
But they didn’t have the green thing back then.
Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service.
They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.
And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.
Don’t you just love being lectured to by today’s “greens”…?
remember the sask ndp paying al gore 250,000 taxpayer dollars to have that fat bastard speak here. what a waste of money
The water is now up over the road south of my lane. There is no doubt as to the fact that Global Warming/Cooling/Not Changing At All/ETC is the root cause of this. The last time the water was this high was the early 50’s, so tips on how the 50’s flood was caused by AGW would be useful. Perhaps radiation from nuclear testing?
Just fired off a letter to our local paper. A reporter doing a story on Arbutus trees dying due to a fungus interviewed a local arborist, who claimed the fungus was exasperated by ‘climate change’.
The reporter dutifully reported that ‘fact’ in the sub-headline to the story, in order to reinforce the ‘climate change’ meme.
I’ve called the reporter out on ‘credibility’ for all his reader’s to see – since he should have asked the arborist for evidence of his claim instead of simply printing it as fact.
Hopefully, by calling their professionalism into question, we can get lazy or dis-interested reporters to start doing their job.
Whoops! I know that Arbutus trees can’t be ‘exasperated’ no matter how much the fungi annoys them.
Should have been ‘exacerbated’ of course.
BTW, in Nanaimo we’ve had only ONE day over 20C so far this year. Today reached only 12C and by 6pm I could actually see my breath in the air.
Love your little essay, Shawn. Is that original, or is there a source for it? I’d love to forward it to some people.
Tis an ill wind that blows nobody any good.
What impresses me and should thoroughly discourage the warmists is the wide awareness of the PDO with it’s El Nino and La Nina phases.
This cold wet, stormy spring is textbook La Nina…and a critical mass are aware of that.
Casual conversation regards CAGW with ridicule.
Windmills and solar panels are generally regarded as foolish fads.
Numerous outlier events are cited, such as the extreme cold in the late fall of 1945…followed by seeding in early March.
I received an advertising email from Honda yesterday and included in it was a report on Honda’s efforts regarding reducing its CO2 emissions and combating climate change. They also had a poll about their environmental CO2 reducing efforts. I filled out the poll as I thought best and made many comments where applicable, as well as what I thought of climate change.
It seems like almost every company has bought into this fraud and for advertising purposes projects some sort of green agenda to placate the gullible.
Toronto may believe in Global Warming, but Global Warming doesn’t believe in Toronto. We’ve had an unseasonably frigid May and it’s still grey and chilly this morning.
Ellie; you’ll get no sympathy from LotusLand!
The local ski hills (Vancouver) have announced they’ll be open for July 1st. That’s just nuts.

A lot of people are confused about climate and weather. The earth’s climate has been gradually warming since the last ice age. Weather can vary considerably from year to year and around the globe. Just because it’s cooler this year than last year does not mean the gradual warming has stopped.
The Nenana river is a tributary of the Yukon river near Fairbanks. The Nenana Ice Classic gives a rare, reliable climate history that has documented to the minute the onset of the annual thaw as it shifted across 91 years. By this measure, spring comes to central Alaska 10 days earlier in 1990 than in 1960, said geophysicist Martin Jeffries at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. “The Nenana Ice Classic is a pretty good proxy for climate change in the 20th century,”
Remember when this graph was posted on SDA?

Ken, I’m with you regarding Corporate whoring to the Gaia crowd.
I was just noting that Bridgestone Tire Co. is running TV ads that have everything to do with their environmental creds and virtually nothing to do with an actual product.
I’ll be looking at $1200 worth of tires soon and I probably won’t be looking at Bridgestone.
Can’t fault the marketing people for shearing the sheeple. That’s their job. There are a lot of urban metrosexuals that buy into this whole ‘greenshift’. They’re young professionals with money to spend. “A fool and his money are soon parted” is an old parable that’s just as true today.
