Move those goalposts!
The only thing worse than Stockholm Syndrome (as discussed in an earlier post) would be for the authorities to allow a hostage situation to continue until all of the captives publicly express agreement with the goals of their captors.
But vaccine targets are at least partially arbitrary. The threshold needed to achieve population immunity against SARS-CoV-2 is still being debated, the goalposts ever-shifting. Once 60 per cent, now 70 to 80 per cent — and maybe higher. “What if we get stalled at 78 per cent,” said Peter Loewen, professor of political science, global affairs and public policy at the University of Toronto. “Do we just keep holding off? When do we round up?”

Springs Church faces backlash over maskless grad, pastor says they complied with rules
The Springs Church in Winnipeg is facing backlash after screengrabs showed up on social media Saturday of what appeared to be a graduation ceremony at the church last week in apparent violation of public health orders.
But they weren’t. Read the whole thing.
A couple of pictures that when you look at them just the right way makes it looks like kids are doing something “normal”. Even though it wasn’t anything close to normal and people were losing their minds.

The Saskatoon Police Service needs your help. They think we’ve forgotten about their ‘stand down’ orders for George Floyd parades and rail blockades.
They’ve provided a handy form.

Wuhan Flu: Shut Up And Take It
Some experts say the VITT syndrome has not been well described to the public.
This is no “run of the mill venous blood clot” in the leg after a long flight, according to Dr. David Fisman, a University of Toronto professor, epidemiologist and an infectious disease specialist with Ontario’s COVID-19 Science Advisory Table.
Trudeau, for his part, has become a walking, talking, stinking metaphor for his own government’s failure.
Pressed by Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner on what AstraZeneca recipients should do about a second shot, Trudeau — who got a dose of this product in April — said he spoke to his family doctor and he was told it would be safe for him to get that shot again.
Trudeau also cautioned that he’s not an expert and Canadians should take direction from health authorities.
This is what happens when politicians and pretentious health bureaucrats communicate with unfounded confidence; when big tech silences and big media defames legitimate voices of dissent; when cheap-shot politicized name calling takes the place of open scientific inquiry and debate.
A nuclear grade shit show.
A One Dose Summer!
Are we having fun yet?
The Winnipeg School Division says its playgrounds are now off-limits for those who don’t attend school during the day.
The division says the move is being made because of increased use by community members during school hours.
“WSD recognizes that outdoor play is one of the few pleasures families have at this time, however, WSD schools have unfortunately been experiencing people congregating at the school playgrounds both during and after school hours,” said a statement from the division.
Update: one dose summer holidays are starting early for some.

What The Hell?
WillR (in the comments) — I already left this link here in the previous thread, but I think it’s worth looking at the graphs and data tables and asking: “Why did the Ontario lockdown get extended?” Was the decrease in cases not sufficient? Is something else at work?

AHS finds no COVID cases from anti-lockdown rodeo
Held over the May 1 weekend near Bowden, AB, the No More Lockdowns Rodeo drew more than 4,000 attendees over the weekend in defiance of the third lockdown ordered by Premier Jason Kenney’s government.
“AHS has worked with RCMP, the Bowden Agriculture Society and Red Deer County to confirm the rodeo event was in violation of CMOH Orders, and attempted to work with organizers proactively to not allow the event to proceed,” said the AHS in a statement Tuesday afternoon.
“On May 10, RCMP partners delivered charges against the organizers of the event for violation of the Public Health Act.

And The Vaccines Will Manufacture Themselves
Alberta has stopped administering first doses of the AstraZeneca (AZN.L) COVID-19 vaccine because of limited supply, a government spokesman said on Tuesday.
Alberta Health spokesman Tom McMillan said the change was due to supply issues rather concerns about rare side-effects.
“This decision is based on the fact that we are receiving no known future shipments of AstraZeneca at this time but are receiving large quantities of mRNA vaccines,” McMillan said in an email, referring to messenger RNA vaccines from Moderna (MRNA.O) and Pfizer/BioNTech (PFE.N), .
The shortage of AstraZeneca vaccines comes as the western oil-producing province of Alberta struggles with a surge in COVID-19 cases. Last week the provincial government introduced new restrictions to curb infections.

Whether you have the best written constitution on the planet (the US) or you have an unwritten constitution (the UK) or you have a constitution that is no more or less than an act of the Imperial Parliament (Canada) or you’ve had 157 constitutions since 1789 (France), we’re all heading off the cliff. And it may be that for some, when we’re all splattered among the rocks at the bottom, which dead society had the best constitution may afford a certain pleasure in our final moments. But to some of us it’s like re-arranging the premium seating lounge on the Titanic.

“Nobody’s afraid of anybody down here,” he told me, with a renewed happiness in his voice that had been missing for months. “They’ve fully moved on.”
They’ve moved on not because Americans are in denial, and not because they’re that dreadful term “covidiots,” but because the United States has embraced the painstakingly obvious truth that while you need to minimize the harms from COVID-19, you also need to find ways to learn to live with it and let low-risk people get on with their lives.
That is, after all, the approach that’s laid out in Canada’s various pandemic preparedness guidebooks, the latest one having been compiled by Dr. Theresa Tam’s office in 2018.
