So Doug Ford is going to cut off the energy to the United States?  This is an idiotic statement at anytime, but to says it while you’re losing a battle in U.S. courts to keep Enbridge Line 5 open is beyond comprehension.  The truth is that without oil pipelines from America to Quebec and Ontario those 2 provinces would have frozen decades ago.  But of course the Liberals have their climate change victory over the Canadian pipeline project that tried to supply them with oil for Western Canada, that should keep them warm at night.

It’s time for Doug Ford to shut up; his zingers for sound bites are not helping.  Canada needs a trade deal with the U.S.  Our economy is dependent upon it, always has been. There are 119 crossings along the 5,525 mile border between Canada and the United States, 48 of those crossing are in the 4 Western Provinces. There is only 1 highway connecting Western Canada to Eastern Canada. That speaks volumes as to how our industries and trade work in Canada.  To suggest we can replace U.S. trade – over 70% of our exports – by doubling our trade with other countries over the next decade is embecilic. It’s time to make a deal with the U.S.

Let’s hope Ontarians start electing rational adults.

The phrase, Two Solitudes, related to English vs French relations in Canada is being displaced by the solitude between East vs selected areas of the West, rural vs urban, welfare recipient vs wealth creator.     Yeah and in fact, many many people, when contemplating travelling from Western to Eastern Canada and vice versa via road, will route their trip through the US, as it’s much quicker, easier, and cheaper. The TCH is considered adventure travel.

    1. When I was younger, I drove east-west several times. Driving between Sault St Marie and Winnipeg through upper Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota in one LONG day was possible, and I did it several times. Driving the north shore of Lake Superior guaranteed on overnight stop in Thunder Bay. (Multi-lane, straight, high-speed highways made the difference.)

    2. I was going to photograph the plaque at the TCH midway point. After reading it, I shook my head in disgust instead. We had just travelled I-90 two weeks earlier. Except for Lake Louise AB to Falcon Lake MB most of the TCH is a two-lane goat trail. None of the TCH is a freeway. It doesn’t bypass towns or cities. Most rest stops are just pull-offs with only filthy chemical toilets. And the TCH is supposed to be the connection between east and west. What a joke.

        I think the Trans part does in fact mean that its transitioning from a highway into a goat path.

    1. They can be found, but probably not in your political climate. Perhaps more doable might be a politician who takes a stand for the good of your nation for selfish reasons — got anybody who isn’t completely on the payroll of the globalists who also likes the idea of fame, glory, and self-aggrandizement? That would probably be your best shot at a passable standard bearer.

  12. The last 2.5 years of my working life (even though I trained as an interior designer) was doing the invoicing, accounts receivable and accounts payable for a co-op of organic farmers in Regina. Almost 95% of the invoicing was done for American buyers. We occasionally sold to people in the lower mainland BC, once sold a container load of organic mustard to a Swiss Company and another container load of mustard which was air shipped to Japan and a container load of organic durum wheat to Italy. I also learned a lot about transportation logistics, organic farming and best farm practices.
    The point I am making is over 95% of our exports were sold to the United States.

          1. I don’t know. I’ve lived my entire life as a person who is a little too brown to be white and a little too white to be brown. But, when anybody is looking for ‘allies’, well, we’re suddenly whatever side wants us at that moment. Most of my family has been in the same boat.             Blending in has its advantages.

  16. The comparison of 48 western Canadian – USA border crossings to the 1 Canadian east – west highway is important as well as the new “2 solitudes” within all of Canada and not in Quebec.

    Someone should point out to Premiers Ford and Wab Kinew that the eastern provinces can’t eat rhetoric nor heat their houses with it, and without a trade agreement something will replace the Canadian auto industry (the Canadian auto assembly? not so much manufacturing) that now has a 4 month time period to make a decision on continued Canadian assembly or abandon ship and move production to the USA in 2027. At least one of the auto worker unions in Ont. has been given their 1 year fair warning according to their union agreement. Perhaps the something that will replace those assembly plants are food lines, but if Line 5 is closed down from the USA as well, I expect the eastern Premiers will be apoplectic while citizens search for actual answers…

    And the timing of all this is perfect for AB to have a referendum on taking part in the east’s shitshow.
    Whose side am I taking? Any side which opposes those who tried to lock down the country over covid, or froze bank accounts, or tells me we shouldn’t consume American liquor (is this the most minor hill to die on?) or insisting we have French on instructions and can’t buy milk from who we want, or takes BC, AB, and Sask tax and spends it in provinces which now require +20% equalization dollars to make up gov’t “revenue” to cover their operating costs while still digging further into debt on top of all that. Remember WW2 “Victory Gardens”? The citizens in the Atlantic provinces, Quebec and Manitoba should look that one up… the time to start saving seeds is now.

  18. Any potential deal was instantly kaput when Vance stood up and said that bobblehead had tried to out-tough Trump, but it hadn’t worked. Whatever chance the deal-in-the-making had evaporated – because there was no way bobblehead could bring a signed deal home and refute accusations of capitulation after that had been said.

    Now Vance is no dummy. He would have known that.
