Driving- Quebec tightens access to driver’s licences for new immigrants

According to recent statistics, some 40.5% of foreign-born drivers fail the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) driving test. Additionally, they also have more accidents on Quebec roads, which is why the provincial Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Geneviève Guilbault, has announced new rules to regulate access to driving privileges for immigrants originating from specific countries and settling in La Belle Province. “The huge rise in immigration to Quebec is having a major impact not only on our services, but also the safety on our roads,” she justified.

Stupid Is As Stupid Does

It’s not a stretch to come to the conclusion that Canada has essentially become a zombie economy over the last nine years.

“Very simply, for 30 years, Canada has been using outdated thinking in its economic and security strategies, and this is what’s caused the erosion of our prosperity and security,” Balsillie said. “What Donald Trump has done is laid bare the inattention by our economic policy community in that time.”

“A responsible nation would have built a house of bricks, and we built a house of sticks,” Balsillie said. “The big bad wolf has shown up, and everybody’s running around freelancing, saying, ‘What do we do now’?”

A Very Serious Discussion About Canada and its Future

Candace Malcolm interviews Diane Francis about what might happen with Canada in the future. It’s very interesting. Ms. Francis, who has done a ton of research on the topic, shares many facts. One of them, which I was not aware of, is that Canada has British & French roots, whereas America has predominately German roots.

A simple litmus test that I, as a Canadian, like is a simple question to every Canadian I meet: “Tell me what it means to be a Canadian, but don’t mention America, American, or Trump in your answer.” Most people I’ve spoken to cannot provide a reasonable answer.

Update: From 10 years ago, here is Diane Francis talking about her book, on which the above interview was based.

SaskPower now looking to rebuild coal plants instead of shutting them

BREAKING: Op-Ed: Government of Saskatchewan says coal has a future

Government of Saskatchewan says coal has a future. SaskPower is to look at running Poplar River and Boundary Dam Units 4,5 and 6 for decades to come, considering rebuilding them and ignoring federal coal mandate to shut down by 2030. Minister Jeremy Harrison was in Coronach and Estevan telling coal workers that coal has a future.

Here’s the op-ed he submitted exclusively to Pipeline Online, explaining what was going on. I just had a detailed interview with him which will be published Monday.

This is an enormous turnaround that cannot be understated. Saskatchewan is not giving up on coal. Estevan and especially Coronach get a huge reprieve.

And it’s a giant up yours to the feds. I’m sure Guilbeault will have a canary, and a cow. But he won’t eat the cow because my get is he’s a vegan.

Hopefully my 100+ stories talking about the unreliability of wind and solar, and imploring we shouldn’t throw away what works for what we know absolutely doesn’t work had some impact on this.

I’ll have more to write about this in the coming days. There are lots of implications. For instance, since we own the coal, we charge ourselves basically nothing for it. We do pay for the mining, however. But for natural gas, since our domestic production has dropped like a stone, most of our gas comes from Alberta. So every dollar we spend on their gas is a dollar leaving the province, never to come back (sound like Trump?) And here’s the kicker – when LNG Canada goes online, what do you think is going to happen to gas prices? Does anyone think it’ll stay around $2/gigajoule another 10 years? Or will it go up – maybe to $4, or even $6? All of a sudden, gas won’t be so cheap anymore, nor will the electrical power derived from it. But our nearly free coal will be. And once the carbon tax is gone – smooth sailing!

Also, this just happened (gradually, then suddenly…)

BREAKING: With “second carbon tax” in jeopardy, FCL and AGT pause renewable diesel and crush plant projects. The carbon pendulum is swinging, hard.

This Is CNN

CNN found Liable for Defamation.

On Friday, a jury of six in Florida’s 14th Circuit Court in Bay County has found CNN liable for the defamation of Navy veteran Zachary Young and that he was entitled economic and emotional damages, a ruling that proved CNN was not worthy of their moniker “the most trusted name in news.” They also found that CNN’s reporters had demonstrated expressed malice, actual malice, and outrageous behavior, which opened the door for a massive punitive damages judgement.

Some background from Jonathan Turley;

Young’s attorney, Vel Freedman, later laid waste to CNN. He told the court that Young had lost his security clearance back in 2022 and that he hadn’t been aware of that until he double-checked after his testimony in the case. Freedman asked for the right to present a witness who would testify on the issue and Axelrod objected. Judge Henry had had enough and blew up at CNN. He read back Axelrod’s comments and said “You called him a liar multiple times there.” He told Axelrod that he owed an apology to the plaintiff. After telling CNN that “this isn’t Kindergarten, ” he added “Right now, your credibility with me, Mr. Axelrod, is about none.”

That is never a good thing to hear from a judge.
