Carl Heneghan and Tom Jefferson- Weight-Loss Drugs and the Quiet Medicalisation of Everyday Life

A profound shift in how society understands body weight is occuring. Excess weight is no longer seen as the predictable outcome of ultra-processed food, sedentary work, and inequality, but as a pharmacological deficit requiring lifelong correction.

A medication that must be taken indefinitely to maintain its effect is not a public-health triumph; it is a subscription model.

Blacklock’s- Cuts Are Five Percent, Not 10

Federal agencies yesterday outlined payroll cuts that were half the 10 percent stated by Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Budget Office had sought the figure for months.

“There is a lack of detail regarding the impact on individual programs within each organization including the reduction in personnel and potential service level impacts,” said a Budget Office report. “It is unclear if or when the government plans to publish this information or how it will report on the progress and results of the exercise.”

Which Canadian Province Does New York Remind You Of?

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and newly sworn in New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have just announced their plans to spend billions of dollars on a ‘free’ childcare program.

Do you think the money will be coming from New York taxpayers alone or from every other American taxpayer? Is there not a striking similarity with a certain Canadian province?!?

Great Success!

Dan Knight- Canada’s Labour Market Starts to Crack

The most important number isn’t jobs created. It’s people who couldn’t find work. In December, the number of unemployed Canadians jumped by 73,000 in a single month. The unemployment rate rose from 6.5 per cent in November to 6.8 per cent. That move alone wipes out much of the progress made in the fall and tells you the labour market isn’t tightening. It’s loosening.

Is Our Diversities Learing?

Conservative Treehouse;

In a remarkable approach, Secretary Bessent announced during a Fox News interview that a regional targeting effort is now underway that will block anyone who receives public assistance from sending money overseas (remittances to foreign countries). This is not a fee or tax on the remittance, or financial transaction; this is a complete block of their ability to send money overseas. Anyone receiving public assistance will not be able to send money to foreign lands.

Yes, it seems like this is initially going to be subject to the honest admission of the money sender. However, with the IRS reviewing each transfer and cross referencing to public assistance records anyone who attempts to work around this regulation will be subject to federal laws on financial fraud, wire service fraud and potentially money laundering.

The interagency focus will eventually go nationwide, as with the new USAO position that focuses on public assistance fraud; but for now, that focused effort will target Minnesota. Minneapolis will be the beta test for a national rollout.

Elbows Down!

More evidence of Canadian exceptionalism. But not something to cheer about.

The unemployment rate rose to 6.8 per cent in December, StatCan said, up from 6.5 per cent in November.

What’s really notable is where the losses are occurring:

The professional, scientific and technical services sector meanwhile shed 18,000 positions to end the year, and the accommodation and food services industry also faced losses.

Wab Kinew Fails to “Properly” Implement Socialism…

Wab Kinew, Manitoba’s NDP Premier, is running out of other people’s money.

A doubled deficit on life support

The mid year fiscal update now pegs Manitoba’s deficit at about $1.6 billion, more than double the $794 million shortfall forecast in the spring budget. What was supposed to be contained has blown wide open, blamed on “faster than expected spending” and a familiar parade of “one offs” from fires to droughts to floods, disasters that somehow recur in one form or another every year.

This follows a $1.2 billion deficit in 2024 25, roughly $800 million worse than projected in the previous budget; this is not bad luck, it is awful planning. Taxes and fees, including education property taxes, are coming in higher than expected, so the government is running enormous deficits even while digging deeper into a decreasing base of taxpayers’ pockets.

New federal figures show Manitoba set to receive just over $5 billion in equalization in the upcoming fiscal year, up about 7.5 per cent from roughly $4.68 billion and about double what the province received in 2020. Manitoba is the only western province dependent on equalization and, after Quebec, its second largest user in gross terms.

On a per capita basis, Manitoba far surpasses Quebec and is the largest, or one of the largest recipients of federal transfer payments. In other words, we are Canada’s biggest welfare recipients and have been for years. This is a choice that should be unacceptable to Manitobans for ourselves and for our children…

From Minnesota to managed decline

Manitoba did not always underperform. In the 1960s, its growth rates were comparable to similar sized jurisdictions like neighbouring Minnesota. The divergence that began in the 1970s, coincides with Manitobans repeatedly electing socialist NDP governments, embedding command and control economic thinking in policy and driving the province off the path its US peers followed.

The comparative numbers today are stark. In 2022–23, Minnesota’s GDP per capita sits around 78,000 US dollars, with Iowa and Kansas in the low 70,000 dollar range and South Dakota above 74,000. Manitoba, by contrast, is about 46,800 US dollars per person, roughly 40 per cent below Minnesota and far behind most Mid-Western States.

In fairness, Wab Kinew is not the only incompetent NDP leader…

War On Beef

You will live in a pod and eat bugs.

…the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is moving forward with expanded identification and traceability regulations that will require farmers and ranchers to report livestock movements in significantly greater detail. These rules were first proposed in 2023. Conservatives opposed them then, and they oppose them now, because they add new regulatory costs at a moment when households are already being asked to absorb higher food prices and producers are operating under documented financial strain.

(A point repeatedly missed by commentators who write on food prices: commercial beef is sold at auction. Like most western Canadian commodities, there’s no mechanism for producers to recover expenses because they don’t set the price, and their regulatory costs aren’t passed along to the consumer directly.)

John Barlow, the Conservative agriculture critic, released a statement warning that these regulations add yet another layer of red tape onto producers who are already being crushed by higher fuel costs, higher energy prices, labour shortages, drought, and regulatory overload. These aren’t large multinational corporations. These are family farms, ranchers, and community-based agricultural groups trying to survive.[…]

Indeed: The same dysfunctional @liberal_party that has ‘misplaced’ millions of TFW’s, Int’l students, uninvited immigrants etc., and DON’T CARE about finding & sending them home …. Now wants to pinpoint & track EVERY f*kin cow in the food chain??

Farmers would be required to track and report routine livestock movements that were previously informal or community-based, including movements tied to agricultural fairs, 4-H events, rodeos, and local exhibitions.

Those groups have been very clear about what this means. It means more paperwork, more compliance costs, more liability, and fewer events. It threatens youth programs, rural traditions, and the local economies that depend on them. This isn’t theory, these organizations told regulators directly that they may not be able to continue operating under the new rules.

Dear Stupid Woke Women . . .

A Twitter user has published an interesting thread:

Dear stupid progressive white women trying to fill that hole in your soul created by the lies of 3rd Wave feminism:

When someone tells you they have “trained” you to resist & document law enforcement they are LYING to you. It just means you are expendable for their cause.

You have no standing to “resist” law enforcement. In fact, under the right circumstances it is a crime. Under the right circumstances it will get you killed. Law enforcement officers primary job is to stay alive. They can’t protect anyone if they are dead. That is true for every emergency responder.

You are also not trained to “document” anything. You don’t know anything about law enforcement or law enforcement operations. ICE is empowered to enforce immigration law. You may not like those laws. Fucking with law enforcement is not how you change them.
