True North News- Toronto police to target tow truck turf wars as shootings spike by 74%
Since Jan. 1, there have been 26 tow truck-related shootings and discharges, representing 12% of the city’s total shootings and discharges.
“Towing conflicts in the GTA have historically been about territorial disputes and rivalries. However, it’s important to reiterate that this issue involves a very, very small segment of the towing industry,” said Matthews
“It seems gun violence in certain parts of Canada is so common that some in the towing industry believe that public shootings are a feasible response to competitive pressures,” said Giltaca.
Johnson revealed that 85% to 90% of handguns and assault rifles being seized from the crimes are coming from the South of the border, primarily from Ohio, Texas, Florida, and Michigan.

Cabinet in 2020 blacklisted hundreds of thousands of high-powered firearms. Federal consultants counted 110,161 affected by the ban. The Department of Public Safety later estimated the number was as high as 200,000 while the Budget Office put it up to 518,000 firearms.

Canada Post is refusing to collect firearms that were banned by the federal government in 2020, complicating Ottawa’s plans for a buyback program to remove 144,000 firearms from private hands, federal sources say.
The Crown corporation informed the government of its position in a recent letter. It said its decision was based on concerns about its employees’ security, according to federal sources who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
One key source of concern being cited by Canada Post is the possibility of staff conflicts with gun owners who have been asked to give up their so-called “assault” or “military-style” weapons, which can no longer be used or sold in Canada.

Globe and Mail- Liberals withdraw controversial amendments to gun law
Bill C-21 initially targeted handguns but in late-stage amendments the Liberals expanded the law to also target assault-style rifles.
The changes had the rare impact of uniting all opposition parties against the law. Until the proposed changes, both the NDP and Bloc Québécois had supported the bill. The Assembly of First Nations also unanimously opposed the amendments, which would criminalize guns that First Nations people commonly use for hunting.
