If it takes a village to raise a child, it’s doubtful that the quality of childcare will be enhanced if the village is drowning in exponentially rising debt. The fact that two levels of government have reached an agreement on this multi-generational millstone is nothing to be celebrated.
The agreement follows the outline of agreements reached with several other provinces that call for daycare fees to be cut in half next year, and reduced to an average of $10 per day in five years. It includes the creation of more than 40,000 new spaces and commits the federal government to spending $3.8 billion over the next five years.

Although Virginia has been a politically blue state for years, this year’s election has the Democrats’ governor facing a serious challenge.
One of the reasons is that many Virginia parents are outraged by the “woke” propaganda their children are being subjected to in the public schools — and the governor has sided with the education bureaucrats and the teachers union.
Very few politicians in any state dare to go against the teachers unions, which have millions of votes and millions of dollars in campaign contributions.
This is one battle in a much bigger war, and the stakes are far higher than the governorship of Virginia or the Democrats and Republicans. The stakes are the future of this nation.
It’s a war on parents.

When you see this kind of unabashed cheerleading for the newest entitlement fad in the Financial Post, it may be a sign that total societal collapse is not far off.
As any parent can attest, it costs an enormous sum to raise a child. When that cost can be forced onto the hapless group known as “others”, it would be insane to argue that this unfettered parasitism constitutes an economic boost.
Trudeau on Aug. 5 joined Quebec Premier François Legault and a carefully selected group of children and guardians in a Montreal park to announce that Quebec would be getting $6 billion over five years, the province’s share of the $30 billion that Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland pledged in her latest budget for a program that would give parents access to $10-per-day child care within five years. She said it had the potential to provide an economic boost on par with the North American Free Trade Agreement. There’s little reason to doubt the claim.

What’s $4.8 billion between friends, anyway? A convenient rounding error? People in high places might be thinking this will pay dividends when election time rolls around.

It’s a near certainty that any such warnings will be studiously ignored.

With a Conservative opposition that seems bent on self-neutering thanks to the current leader’s taste for Liberal Lite policy, its unlikely that the Liberals will ever get much grief over this in Parliament.

The parents in the backyard say that for every one of them, there are many more, too afraid to speak up. “I’ve talked to at least five couples who say: I get it. I think the way you do. I just don’t want the controversy right now,” related one mother. They are all eager for their story to be told—but not a single one would let me use their name. They worry about losing their jobs or hurting their children if their opposition to this ideology were known.
“The school can ask you to leave for any reason,” said one mother at Brentwood, another Los Angeles prep school. “Then you’ll be blacklisted from all the private schools and you’ll be known as a racist, which is worse than being called a murderer.”
One private school parent, born in a Communist nation, tells me: “I came to this country escaping the very same fear of retaliation that now my own child feels.” Another joked: “We need to feed our families. Oh, and pay $50,000 a year to have our children get indoctrinated.” A teacher in New York City put it most concisely: “To speak against this is to put all of your moral capital at risk.” […]
The atmosphere is making their children anxious, paranoid, and insecure—and closed off from even their close friends. “My son knew I was talking to you and he begged me not to,” another Harvard-Westlake mother told me. “He wants to go to a great university, and he told me that one bad statement from me will ruin us.
