Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

The author, Kurt Schlicter, is a trial attorney and former Colonel in the US Army. I have a few of his books and he is 100% an American patriot who appreciates the past efforts of Canada and it is from this persepective he is writing this.
He is not belittling Canada like a Leftist would do. He’s merely pointing out what Kate has tried to do here on SDA for the last 20 years. He’s informing fellow Americans and Canada what the problems are and he’s being nice about it, but hopes that Canada will become a good neighbor again.
It isn’t going to happen under Carney, but it may when Canada elects a reformer like Trump – not with Trump’s brashness or big mouth although that would be fun to watch – but someone who, lets say in a Canadian way, goes about the business of fixing what’s wrong.
Here’s hoping.
That was supposed to be Harper but he failed hard. Fixing Canada can’t be done when the vast majority of people don’t think anything needs fixing.
That’s because Harper wasn’t as Canada First as many like to wish. Your problems aren’t just with your Liberals.
The analysis is bang on!
Unfortunately, IMHO, Canada is screwed. There is no way a Trump like politician will ever get voted into office here.
I am not anti American at all, but I am going to have a feeling of Schadenfreude after the midterms when Trump becomes a lame duck and after the next presidential election when the Dems take power again.
The American right have become oh so smug and superior and they don’t seem to understand that they only have two more years before AOC or Gavin Newsome is their president and Canada’s problems will look insignificant compared to what they’ll have to live with. They also forget than even though the US might be a great country, most of the actual states are a complete shit show. Whatever issues Canada has we haven’t got a California, New York, Washington Oregon, Illinois, Minnesota etc etc etc.
“Whatever issues Canada has we haven’t got a California, New York, Washington Oregon, Illinois, Minnesota etc etc etc.”
Oh yes we do.
And then there are the things we dont have – that the US does: those states with huge industrial capacity.
The US is thinking about getting new naval vessels built in Korea because it has lost so much of its industrial capacity. You may recall over the last thirty years how US manufacturers shut half the countries factories down and moved them to China. This is the reason Trump is involved in a trade war with Canada. It’s an attempt to get some industry back. Even if they get all the industry out of Canada it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what they sent to China, and after the net election it will all have been for naught because the president will be a Dem and it will be back to the Biden Obama days, it they’re lucky.
Yeah. But my point still stands.
Back to the Biden Obama (Autopen) days if we’re lucky?
How’s that view of your colon looking?
… “we haven’t got a California”
as the Liberal party of Canada shows em the way.
Unencouraging to the point of fatalism while bragging of social status;
with allies like this, who needs liberals?
Rusty, I don’t know where you get your information, but it sounds like CBC. Whatever issues Canada has? My oldest daughter lives in California, she was raised here, moved there at 34, and after 3 years is “never coming back”. She finds it way easier to get ahead, can actually get healthcare, and finds the freedom refreshing. Canada would take a step in the right direction to be California, and that is about the worst state. Everything in Canada is breaking or broken, from the military (non existant) to healthcare, to the roads, the schools, the taxation, the economy, housing and immigration. Canada is a failed shithole, on it’s last circle of the drain.
Who does Canada need a large army to defend ourselves from? The US?
California? The state that is so well governed they passed a law to make it illegal to investigate corruption? The state that less half a city burn down and won’t let the people who lived there rebuild? California is such a great place that nearly 700,000 people a year leave it to move to other states.
I live in Ontario, life is fine for me. I make lots of money, have no debts, get medical care whenever I need it and will retire in a year with a million bucks in the bank and a good corporate pension. I’m better off here than I would be just about anywhere else. My kids went to good schools, are well educated and the roads I drive on are just fine. Immigration is a problem here, but it is in the US as well. Trump is working to fix that, but as soon as the dems are back in power, and they will be eventually, probably in two years the US will be swamped by the third world just like it was under Obama. The US has a temporary reprieve, and as soon as Trump is gone it will be like the Obama years again. only worse.
I’m in a similar situation although not as lucrative.
The roads in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario are mostly shit.
There are crackheads everywhere.
The Indian reconciliation is nothing but vengeful and gaining momentum.
Immigration is the worst problem – shitty people make Shithole countries.
The norm for average people is shifting radically and downward.
What you have – and to a lesser extent myself have – is fading rather quickly now.
You’re right, bit the US has the same problems, with a temporary reprieve under the current president who has a few months before he’s a lame duck then two years before he will likely be replaced by AOC or Gavin Newsome. When that happens it will be open borders and fentanyl ODs all over again like it was for 12 years of Obama and Biden.
But … do you believe that a man with a penis is a woman … if he says so? And about those Indian graves … ?
So you’re contented with an utter lack of FREE speech and personal liberty and autonomy?
How exactly do you get healthcare when you need it? 20% of Canadians have no family doctor, specialist waits can be years, surgical waits are years, ER waits are 14 hours where I am, the list foes on and on.
hay shacklefart
Blow me!
You’ll be blowing President Newsome in a few years.
“You’ll be blowing President Newsome in a few years.”
You keep fantasizing about that if it makes you feel better. I prefer reality, myself.
GYM will have blown most of the trannies of North America in a few years.
Thank you for proving Mr. Schlicter’s points.
How about you start focusing on your own people instead of sitting around with bated breathe to see if my country falls.
And fyi: even though those are blue states, nonetheless, they are my people, so I care about them. I also know that not every person in those states is happy with the way things are, and I want better for them (yes, in spite of themselves for some, I want better for them)…because they are my people.
Here’s an idea: can you guys TRY being Canadian? Not British, not French, not European, not Asian, not American, just try being Canadian…which should be something a lot more deep and meaningful than “not American”. Yes, even the Mexicans manage this one. We’d all probably get along better if you did.
I know Canada has problems. My point is that America thinks everything is hunky dory when they’re two years away from electing someone who will make Obama look moderate. The US is two years away from a total shit storm and all I ever hear from the American right is smug condescending superiority because they’ve had one president in the last 30 years who is trying to make things better. The US is the brokest country in the history of broke and in two years it will be back to the old status quo of exporting industry and importing fentanyl, Mexican cartels and the third world.
First, we are not the ‘brokest country in the history of broke’. Secondly, you seem very sure of yourself that everything will go back to the way things were. I didn’t know you had the gifts of a seer. For such an not anti-American as you claim yourself to be, you certainly do seem to relish this notion.
I wouldn’t be so sanguine if I were you — what backs up the Canadian dollar? If my country falls, yours will do so doubly because my country is your greatest trading partner. If my country falls, who will defend you? For as you yourself said: why do you need a military? You’re admitting that you rely on us.
And finally and again: how is forecasting this fate for my country focusing on your own? I’m happy for you that you are so well off personally, but your people aren’t doing so well. Maybe you should want them to be in a better place, if for any reason that you have to live amongst them. And, what is gold today is gone tomorrow. Unless of course you are a soothsayer who predictions are never wrong.
Canada is California, New York, Washington Oregon, Illinois, Minnesota etc etc etc.
That rubicon was crossed long ago.
Except without the wealth.
I could not have expressed it better myself!
We are a ridiculous little people. A ridiculous, inconsequential little people.
No only have we intentionally made ourselves that way, but many of us wear both our ridiculousness and our insignificance as a badge of honor and a mark of obnoxiously-preening moral superiority.
Elbows up, losers!
Then why don’t you stop [being a ridiculous little people]? The simplest thing is often the hardest.
“Then why don’t you stop [being a ridiculous little people]? The simplest thing is often the hardest.”
Because people like Rusty are still out there quietly voting Liberal every election, no matter how badly the Liberals screw up the country.
Don’t worry about Rusty. Go around people like Rusty. Let the universe deal with people like Rusty.
Yes, it’s time to get rid of people like Carney, but you have them in every political party.
I think you’d find that my country and my President would be more than happy to see that happen; you’d get to save face — but only if you as a people take that step. Yes, you have been/are propagandized; time to deprogramme.
This is more easily said than done, but nobody ever said necessary was easy. Nobody can promise victory either. But it’s worth a shot.
“Yes, it’s time to get rid of people like Carney, but you have them in every political party.”
Canada’s biggest problem there is that our Official Opposition party (the so-called ‘Conservative’ Party of Canada) is currently led by one of them.
Not so long ago we had the same problems, still do to some extent. And the future wasn’t looking very bright.
It can be done.
unknown jane – methinks you are reading “we” much too literally. SDA readers – including me (he says modestly) – and certain other other Great-Souled Canadians are OBVIOUSLY exempt from my opprobrium.
I’m saying ‘you’ as you/your country. You live there; you’re tied to the place. “You” should be thinking about how “you” can make it better for “yourselves”/yourselves.
I say this for and about my own country too.
May I say very clearly that the “we deserve this” has got to stop. It’s as bad as “elbows up”. I put it on the same plane of reasoning as the whole “Sorry” thing (off topic maybe, but can I just say I’ve always hated that? like the kids say “it’s big yikes”). I really don’t want any of that mindset imported into my country.
Admittedly I have had some fun with this too — and it’s been intentional.
Time to wake up Canada; it’s getting late.
Canada needs to clean its own room first. But they’ve already been told that … by a Canadian. A pariah to most Canadians … but still a Canadian
Hey, you’re preaching to the choir here. It’s the “Elbows Up!” retards we have no control over causing the problem.
…. a giant scam involving allegedly dead Indian children — oh wait, we’re supposed to call them “First Peoples.” Of course, they have enshrined collective guilt over taming their vast lands as their national ideology. They despise us, but they also despise themselves. We have a glorious Constitution, and they have an endless land acknowledgment.
Schlichter knows Canada
He definitely sees you better than you see yourselves. Those land acknowledgements keep you divided and at each other’s throats; they do nothing except encourage virtue signaling (I believe it is really a pernicious form of racism, the real kind, the kind leftists engage in) and thus keep you all divided. You don’t think of yourselves as a united people. It’s a trap.
The people in power want you divided; that’s how they stay in power and gain more; that’s how they yank you around and keep you weak.
The Indian part of me much prefers having military aircraft names than so-called land acknowledgements. See how that works?
This may be the most brilliant (and funny) paragraph written this year:
Just what the hell are the Canadians thinking? Do they think that if they cry enough, America’s going to roll over? We’re now in another trade war with them, and the Canadians are whining, and the Democrats — who never side with America — are whining right along with them. It’s about time to be done with the country that is touted as America’s best buddy but is actually tied for its most annoying next-door neighbor. They cry that America is being mean because it’s looking out for its own interests. How dare America expect Canada to pull its weight on its own defense? How dare America not want to perpetuate unfair and unbalanced tariff and trade rules in perpetuity? And how dare America not recognize the moral superiority of a country that, if it were a stereotype, would be a fugly, sexually dysfunctional wine woman with a “Hate Has No Home Here” sign on the front lawn of the condo it shares with five cats, all named after characters in “Twilight.”
And it will all end in two years when a Dem is back in the Whitehouse.
I hope and pray that your prediction is wrong. But even if you’re correct, none of that obviates the need for Canada to fix its own house (see Rule 6, by you-know-who).
Our dollar is already at 72 cents US. When the Dems take over, the US dollar will fall and ours will be dragged down with it, against all other currencies. When the US is in financial trouble, the whole world is in trouble. What will your million dollars be worth then?
When? Talk about being a doom and gloomer.
You’re watching far too much CNN, PMSNOW and CBC.
AOC is a clown, and Newsome is a Greasy Disaster, a degenerate carnival clown, that has destroyed California.
And you fret over the midterms. Talking Points™️.
Trump still maintains control of tariffs and Executive Powers. GOP retains the senate, at the least. The Demarxists are showing themselves as Marxist radicals. They are Divided.
You still their show trials and “impeachments” mean anything whatsoever?
Grow a spine.
Remember, Demarxists are the biggest Protectionists, historically. Little would change with them in office, in regards to screwing Canada, the Useful Idiots of the western world.
“They despise us but they also despise themselves.”
Yup!
Canada is so fcked up it directs its daily Two Minutes of Hate at itself.
The question of whether Trump is looking out for America’s interests will be answered on November 3rd.
Certainly economists don’t think so. Trump is advancing fringe economic theories that were abandoned in the 1800s. And the results show. Almost all economic indicators are currently either mediocre or poor under Trump, despite his campaign promises of the economy taking off like a rocket ship and inflation falling on day one. And now the US is staring down the maw of a fiscal crisis, an issue Trump has done little on until now.
What Canadians are decrying are economic policies that are hurting both countries.
There you go again with the economists. What’s their track record been so far? Economists study a system that can’t be reproduced in a lab and engages with human behavior (never an easy thing to predict).
And what Canadians are decrying are policies that primarily hurt them (fair enough) without looking around to see if perhaps there might be a way to work in a more mutually beneficial fashion.
The entire world is running a deficit, largely caused by the policies of economists, due to an overly financialized system. My country is trying to break out of that. Will it work? Don’t know, but even at this late hour it’s better than continuing on the path that we’re on. World’s headed for the shit heap Killer; we’re just trying to be the polished turd that sits on the top of the heap — at this point, it’s the best we can hope for. What’s your country doing to save itself? Maybe you should start.
Don’t listen to economists. Go with your instincts. For sure, that’ll give better results. That’s what Trump is doing, and the results have been
spectacularincreasingly mediocre, especially given his promises. The US federal deficit is 5.6% of GDP — and this without the excuse of being in a recession. The US will have to implement austerity measures, and that’s going to suppress the economy. Enjoy the ride.
“Don’t listen to economists. Go with your instincts. For sure, that’ll give better results.”
I was a flight instructor. We had lots of work proving to students how their instincts could kill them. Flying is not natural, and neither are economics. Instincts can’t save you there.
Aromatherapy is all about instincts.
Ben Hogan said every instinct you have for the game of golf is probably wrong. Economics is the same.
Interesting that you should bring up flying. What is the OODA loop and what is it in contrast to?
Answer: the PDCA…often used in commercial operations (aka. economics).
Neither one, by the way, is wrong, but it is wrong to rely on one over the other. You need both (or some version of both — they aren’t inclusive).
What makes you think this is about ‘instincts’? I don’t know how many times I have to repeat this but: economy theory (theory!) is only one aspect that has to be taken into consideration when it comes to running a country. There are many factors involved, not only dollars. A country that runs itself like a balance sheet will fail because a country is made up of more than a balance sheet — the communists were such materialists, look how that particular ideology has worked out historically.
And you’ll be going down with us, harder, enjoy the show!
I talk about instincts because that’s what drives people to think that tariffs against another country is some kind of win.
And yes, if the US even approaches a fiscal crisis, the entire global economy will suffer.
Killer…tariffs can be useful; they have historically proven themselves to be useful in certain scenarios/applications. They can produce a winning scenario by setting up certain conditions towards a goal.
Much like everything else, no, you cannot use them for everything, all the time, never changing. That’s ossified thinking. The same as those who think free markets is the cure for every ill, all the time, never ending (and often what they are holding up as free markets aren’t really that free; see: Canada).
But I realize that you are ideologically captured, so my response is only meant for others who might read this.
In very specific circumstances tariffs might be justified. But Trump has carpet bombed the globe with his tariffs, and often invokes them for non-economic reasons.
“For non-economic reasons” — Killer, you do surprise me sometimes.
Now, why would he do it for non-economic reasons? What possible outcomes/opportunities could present themselves? And, hang in there, why might we want to pursue those outcomes/opportunities?
But there are certain economic ones as well — what might those be and why might we want to pursue them?
“Certainly economists don’t think so”. Sounds a lot like the COVID nonsense and the “experts”. You do know that there are economists with differing opinions and if it weren’t so, the world would only need one. By the way, Robert Mugabe was an “economist”. I have a hundred trillion dollar Zim bill I carry with me to remind me.
I have this quaint idea that the POTUS should follow the best advice available. Navarro isn’t it.
Navarro isn’t the only person he listens to, and if you’re talking about the trade talks with your country, well, why were Lutnik and Navarro brought in at the last minute? Think strategically.
Lutnick was likely brought in (or brought himself in) because he didn’t think the US was asking for enough. He said so explicitly. I guess he figured Canada had no choice but to acquiesce. Carney disagreed.
Still not thinking strategically. Oh well.
Again … there you go with ancient history from the 1800’s. Geeze. You’re reaching back even further than 1987 or 1957. The globe has changed. Political economies have changed. Stop living in the past.

Happy 250th Birthday and God bless America. Without you, I wouldn’t know what Liberty meant.
Schlicter nails it. He KNOWS Canada well.
Canada is the Black Knight of Monty Python fame. Delusional, arrogant, in total denial of the fatal fight it is in. This country needs a good, deep, damaging recession. It’s been slightly over 40 years since the terrible recession of 1982-1987. It was an awful time to be exiting school, with training in a resource/development based profession.
And, it looks like we’re going to get it, good and hard. Thanks to an incompetent, arrogant, delusional, and manipulative government of CCP/Quebecois acolytes. Already, various reps of the US have said “We’re Done and moving on”. I hope so. None of them should answer Carney’s or Drunk NepoBaby Leblanc’s phone, anytime soon. They should ignore Chinada for well over a year. Let the damage happen for real. Watch those factories and jobs move to the US, in short order. Bye bye auto industry Thug Ford, bye bye lumber and tourist industry Drugstore Dave, bye bye dollar as it crashes to 60 cents or worse.
This country is run by idiots, slaves to their CCP and EU masters. They do NOT represent the people of this country.
Let’s have that recession, Good and Hard! It’s what ElBoWZos deserve!
Perfect analogy. Canada’s limbless torso: “come back here America! And I’ll BITE your legs off”
Old Swiss Folktale.
There once was a pasture full of silly sheep guarded by a crooked shepherd who did not re-seed the fields. Soon the hay got thin and was overtaken by weeds and the sheep started bleating at the shepherd. “Look over this fence to the south” said their shepherd. “See that shepherd over there? It is all his fault that you are doing so poorly, not mine.”
So the sheep thanked their shepherd and stood at the fence bleating and looking south.
Heh.
Our greatest virtue signal, the highest Canadian achievement,is “Victimhood”.
And the Elbozos typify this.
Glorying in their “Resistance to Bad Orange Man” as Little Lord Carney robs them blind.
Probably the best example of state Propaganda since WW2.
Canadians,or Can Ahh Duhhs,as we are describing that eastern Enclave, want to suffer..
And when they are suffering sufficient pain, they will band together and blame….Alberta.
This is what they do.
Being governed by Liars, thieves and bandits is what our eastern Comrades insist is “Good Government”.
Only complete and irrevokable independence can save the West.
