The Love Shack

If anybody could stomach watching Mark Carney’s interview on the Daily Show, they would have witnessed a public figure effortlessly fielding a string of puff ball questions posed to him by a host who could barely contain his unbridled enthusiasm. I was surprised that Jon Stewart didn’t lean over the desk and kiss him.

In response to a question about how Carney would be “left holding the carbon tax bag,” which Stewart argued was “not politically feasible,” Carney hinted that he would target the oil and gas industry with climate policy.

“Almost 30 per cent of our emissions from Canada come from the production and shipment of oil to the United States,” said Carney. “So part of it is cleaning that up, getting those emissions down, more than changing, in a very short period of time, the way Canadians live.”

No Nazis For You

Blacklock’s- Files Hidden To Protect Nazis

“These records are complex and varied and there is upwards of 1,000,000 pages of material likely including some material classified Top Secret,” staff at Library and Archives Canada wrote in a 2023 briefing note. “These records may contain information on investigations of individuals determined to be innocent,” it added.

Francisco- Why on earth would anyone think there are still Nazi’s in Canada?

How Do We Loathe Him?

John Ivison counts the ways;

[Trudeau’s] declaration that Canada has no core identity and is a “post-national” state was the catalyst for a steady decline in the pride of being Canadian.

The white-hot anger now being directed towards the prime minister is the result of a cultural backlash from people who feel like they have become strangers in their own land, abandoned by progressive values and policies they don’t share or understand.

And somehow manages to avoid the words “Chinese” and “corruption”.

Reaching for a million

When I interviewed Premier Scott Moe during the fall election, he surprised me by saying he would like to see this province reach 1 million barrels of oil production per day, up from its current ~450,000 bpd. In 2019, the Saskatchewan Party government put forward a goal of hitting 600,000 bpd by 2030.

That got me thinking – could this be done? How? What would it take?

And when he won the election and promised to get everyone a family physician, I immediately wondered, where would the money come from? How are we going to pay for all of these doctors and teachers?

And what would the benefit be if we did double oil production? The impact would be massive. Oil is already our number one contributor to GDP, greater than ag or potash. We can’t easily double either of those. But we can do something about oil.

North Dakota went from 90,000 bpd to over a million in a few short years. They have vastly superior geology in one way, but we have 30 billion barrels of heavy oil that they don’t have.

So I started asking around, and did a few interviews, the first of many.  I’ve been talking about this for a while, and now it’s time to put the pedal to the metal.

This will be an ongoing series, meant to explore just how Saskatchewan could double its oil production. Some might be naysayers. But maybe some will have some good ideas. I’m going to interview all the smartest people in the room over the coming months, even years, and keep pumping out stories. Premier Moe told me during my Christmas interview to “keep the heat on us,” and I intend to.

And in the end these stories are going to effectively be wrapped in a bow and plopped on the energy minister’s desk, with the ideas from the brightest people in the Saskatchewan oilpatch. Here you go, have at ‘er.

Reaching for a Million, Part 1: If Saskatchewan wants to pay for doctors and teachers, we need to drill, baby, drill

Skepticism of Any Significant Changes

This is a very interesting discussion between Ashley Frawley and Emily Jashinsky. In brief, Frawley is very skeptical of any politicians deviating away from the “liberal world order”.  I share her skepticism.

I think there is no better example of this than the “Conservative” and Labour governments in the UK. The vast majority of Britons do not want the policies of either party but both groups of politicians refuse to do what the majority of people want.

As a Canadian, I’m hopefully that Pierre Poilievre will do the right things but I, and many others I know, are very skeptical that he’ll be much different than Trudeau in substance. For example, if he doesn’t completely defund the CBC in his party’s first 100 days, then Canadians will know that he’s full of hot air.

As for Trump, I have several friends who, while they celebrated his victory, are very concerned that he and his government will not fulfill any of the big promises. My response to this is simple: “I hope you’re wrong but if Trump doesn’t do what he promised, there will be a massive pushback from Team MAGA.” The first 100 days of his presidency should reveal much.
