Skepticism of Any Significant Changes

This is a very interesting discussion between Ashley Frawley and Emily Jashinsky. In brief, Frawley is very skeptical of any politicians deviating away from the “liberal world order”.  I share her skepticism.

I think there is no better example of this than the “Conservative” and Labour governments in the UK. The vast majority of Britons do not want the policies of either party but both groups of politicians refuse to do what the majority of people want.

As a Canadian, I’m hopefully that Pierre Poilievre will do the right things but I, and many others I know, are very skeptical that he’ll be much different than Trudeau in substance. For example, if he doesn’t completely defund the CBC in his party’s first 100 days, then Canadians will know that he’s full of hot air.

As for Trump, I have several friends who, while they celebrated his victory, are very concerned that he and his government will not fulfill any of the big promises. My response to this is simple: “I hope you’re wrong but if Trump doesn’t do what he promised, there will be a massive pushback from Team MAGA.” The first 100 days of his presidency should reveal much.

  1. PP won’t defund the CBC immediately….the plan will likely be to gradually defund over a 10 year period.

      1. Because, as an establishment politician, he figgers he’ll lose less support by pulling off the band-aid hair by hair rather than just ripping it off.

        $0.02

Me? I’d just amputate the entire limb & move on to the next item on the agenda.

  2. Hope springs eternal…
I’m pretty sure the CBC’s existence/funding will come up in election debates.
We’ll see how Canadians vote before Crowning the Cons victorious.

  3. Stephan Harper missed the opportunity to defund the CBC. What’s changed now is that the viewership is down significantly. Change is inevitable, but as Pierre said the building should be used for housing, find that to be a stretch.

  4. CBC will never be shut down by any government as it’s function is about control and not information. PP has spent his life in Ottawa, and is an insider as bad as Mulroney. Expecting change, you may get a little, but expecting real change? LOL The carbon tax will be here for years until they create another one to replace. The civil service will remain as large, and the same stack of treaties, laws, precedences and other baggage will stop us from making any headway.

The west only has one option, and they are afraid because an imaginary line was drawn during their grandfather’s time that they believe to now be immutable. The west was claimed by Eastern Canada as a trophy to be kept from the rapidly growing U.S. and it has been enslaved, and restricted ever since.

  5. In conversations with true believer liberals, they appear to hope they are ‘classical liberals”. But nothing could be further from the truth.

They’re phoneys with a yellow streak down their back and illusions of being Mussolini.

  6. ” … but I, and many others I know, are very skeptical that he’ll be much different than Trudeau in substance.”

Naaawwww, don’t worry. He’s just being vewy, vewy quiet because – according to his supporters – that’s what right-wing political geniuses do.

  7. PP tipped his hand enough times that I am afraid he will turn out to be a disappointment. Condemning Christine Anderson and the three MPs – Leslyn Lewis being one of them – who met with her was a major reveal. His latest was his TDS tirade.

    1. Voting to designate the Proud Boys as a terrorist org. Voting to investigate the trucker’s funding. Standing idly by as all Canadian’s civil rights were violated in 2020-2021.

      1. “Condemning Christine Anderson and the three MPs – Leslyn Lewis being one of them – who met with her was a major reveal. His latest was his TDS tirade.”

        and:

“Voting to designate the Proud Boys as a terrorist org. Voting to investigate the trucker’s funding. Standing idly by as all Canadian’s civil rights were violated in 2020-2021.”

Add his previously stated support for ‘supply management’ and the vote to accuse all Canadians of genocide, and the list is getting longer…

        1. Voting in favor of banning “conversion therapy”, which is in reality voting in favor of mutilating children.

          1. No, its talking to your kid after the teacher convinced him to chop his dick off, you freak.

          2. No it isn’t. Conversion ‘therapy’ is every bit as insane and fact free as ‘gender transition’ for children.

      2. The Proud Boys are indeed thugs who have no place here. The issue is that this correct logic is not being applied to GreenPeace and the like.

  8. The CPC has rarely been conservative, other than slowing down the Liberals. They come across as having neither backbone nor intellect. Their supporters have a grade 6 IQ where they parrot nazi propaganda and call true conservatives “Maxipads.”
Maybe Polievre will do the right thing. So far he has been very timid in his platform. His wife, at least in ’20, is quite ok with the totalitarian state. Even though he’s not a conservative at heart, Polievre will act as a conservative if enough people vote for a conservative party (PPC being the main one). He’s currently well positioned to be the next prime minister, but if he sees there are votes to be gained by turning right, he’ll turn right.

    1. Well said, WalterF.

A vote for the PPC (or the Alberta/Sask parties that I don’t have access to) is never ‘wasted’…it’s a message. A clear message that the CPC *could have* had that vote if they were smarter and possessed some integrity.

  9. Trump:
The bureaucracy was just polled and 42% of US Government employees will fight anything he does:
    https://www.newsx.com/world/deep-state-fears-grow-poll-finds-federal-workers-ready-to-defy-trumps-second-term-agenda/

When Ronald Reagan took office the US airport flight controllers struck – illegally. He got managers and instructors to fill in while he fired every damn one of the striking controllers. ALL of them.

If Trump starts to weasel around he will know the anger very quickly.

    1. If 42% of the US public service will fight Trump, I can only imagine that 84% of the Canadian public service will fight any reforms being implemented here.

        1. They Cons already know – the PS fought Harper every which way.
The Bureaucracy is the biggest anti-democratic org. in every single western nation.

  10. If Pierre and the UCP were actually conservative, they’d announce defunding the CBC on Day 1, and actually do it on Day 2.

    But they won’t.

Instead they’ll do what they’re intended to do – talk the talk but never walk the walk. Working hand-in-hand with their supposed enemies, they’ll spend four years pretending to fight for “the right” while instead continuously reacting to “the left”. And like Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown, they’ll sway voters into believing that they have to moderate their views to sway voters on the left.

    While the clock winds down.

Were they actually conservative, they would instead do what every leftist party does – scorched earth until they’ve implemented their policies, and THEN moderate their positions after already having accomplished everything they set out to do.

They can then appear moderate over the next few years while the brainwashed left forget about what they did in year 1. Especially with no communist propaganda station to remind them.

  11. So it’s up to all commenters here to join their local CPC branches and make lots of noise. Hold them to their promises.

I was at a CPC meeting a little over a year ago addressed by a couple of young MP’s, and the issue of abolishing the Xi B Xi came up. The room was firmly in favour, and a “Progressive” twit woman speaking in favour of the Xi B Xi was almost shouted down.

That sort of pressure should be kept up relentlessly.

PP should be reminded that he rode to his present position on the anger generated by the assault in the Freedom Convoy.

But we’ve all got to take part.

    1. Very true. Each riding has about 85,000 people in it, yet party membership is probably between 100 and 200 people, and of those maybe two dozen show up to meetings. Most riding executives are acclaimed. It is SO EASY to get deeply involved! Just show up!

    2. “PP should be reminded that he rode to his present position on the anger generated by the assault in the Freedom Convoy. ”

He should also be reminded that a real leader isn’t too timid to state his true political positions. A real leader would explain his conservative policies, then *defend* them, controversial or not…he would explain slowly and carefully, as if to a small child, why these policies are actually better for Canadians than the Liberal and NDP policies. He would ridicule and dismantle the ‘progressive’ arguments and constant fearmongering against those policies from the left-wing mainstream news media. He would call them out on their childish name-calling and insults, and challenge them to public debates to defend their positions.

Those are just some of the things that a REAL leader would do. If we had one.

    3. Remember also that PP didn’t provide any support whatsoever for the Freedom Convoy. He quaked in fear before the karens demanding more East Germany, less freedom.

    1. It’s an appealing idea, but not the highest priority.
I’m amazed anyone believes conservatives will push back on Trump if he doesn’t deliver all their dreams and wishes in 90 days, because 1. Where else we going to go? 2. Infighting among conservatives is far too common and utterly destructive to achieving essential objectives. 3. Anyone who was conscious during his last term knows the insane, illegal and unproductive distractions that Democrats will erect out of thin air. He was impeached over a phone call, for God’s sake!

      1. It was “infighting among conservatives” that gave us Trump in the first place, as opposed to Mittens and the like.

  12. Politician.
    Poly Ticks.
Red Tie Blue Tie,same party same old lies.
“Can’t we all just get along”?
    And “compromise”?
    So sits Can Ahh Duh.
Indebted to the bone and seeking ever deeper servitude.

Who are these Canadian Conservatives of which you speak?
Nothing is going to change under a majority Progressive Conservative Government.
We know this from 6 decades of observation.
Whatever the “Will of the people” is we will never know,as we fund endless government organizations to ensure that the “Peoples voice” never breaks free.

Recall the Dread Covid Theatre, where all these little helpers, all 338 of them declared that Government Hysteria overrules all the rights and freedoms of the citizen.

How do you come back from such a State of Thuggery?

Look at the State censorship and lies of the last decades.
    Look at the Kleptocracy.
    Temporary Income tax..levied since 1917.
GST imposed to pay down the national debt..Or so the parasites claimed.
Fuel taxes..dedicated to road repair..Nice roads eh?
And the empty promises of State run healthcare.
So nothing will change 60% of those who vote, love them sweet lies..The bigger the better.

I look forward to the conservative betrayal of Western Canada,as we praise the crumbs they permit us to keep.
Between Dear Leader Justine and his Liberal Horde and the platitudes of Pierre P and the Progressive Chorus, the Western Canadian remains a serf..Not a citizen.

Hence the Lawfare Abuse of everyone who stood up during the Truckers Protest..
    One must ask..Is mischief a greater offence,in Canada,than treason?

  13. The CPC typically just taps the brakes on Liberal progress.

The CPC lost me back in the Harper days when they failed to secure our future. My MP then blamed the deep state. Whatever you cuck. Justin found out about the OIC.

I’m not into the PPC because of Covid I’m not into Canada. I don’t consent to be governed from Ottawa anymore so I don’t vote. The solution is local, everywhere.

I have some hopes for PP, but he hasn’t exactly delineated a plan to eradicate the scourge of Liberal progress and punish them for what they’ve done. And if he doesn’t do that, I think the CPC is toast for a generation.

Canadians aren’t crying just make it stop now, they want the Liberals stopped forever. Again, the solution is local, everywhere.

They need to be punished and it starts with you.

    1. It doesn’t matter whether or not you consent to being governed from Ottawa.
The fact is that you are governed from Ottawa, and probably will be for the foreseeable future.

  14. The Liberals and CPC are a tag team intent on destroying Western Canada and destroying our rights and freedoms.
The Liberals swing the billy club and slash with a knife in what’s supposed to be a family get together. Then the CPC comes along to revive our hopes, but never get around to being conservative.

  15. L- I see red Tories in front of me, red Tories to the right, of me, red Tories to the left of me
    and pink Tories behind me.

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil…”

  16. The real power is held in this country by the unelected/unaccountable senior bureaucrats. They are also all card carrying Lieberal members and/or WEF adherents. If you lobby an MP or even a Department Minister, you are given a name and contact information for the bureaucrat you need to bribe. The MP doesn’t do anything else.

CRA is enforcing the new capital gains because it knows that Finance will get it passed retroactively no matter who forms the next government. There are very few occasions where the elected politicians refused the bureaucracy. One rare example was the Lieberals refused Finance’s original request to implement the GST. Mulroney turned out to be that sucker.

  17. L- While agreeing with the defenestration of the mind virus emitting c b c. If the C.P.C gov’t.
also quits the World Health Organization and explains, in enough detail why. There would be
    some reason for optimism.

To date the history of the C.P.C. has been to expel any M.P. or would be M.P. , who exercises their right of free speech, under the rationale, that polling over rides principles.

Whomever, is selected to replace In-Justinian, will likely repeal the hated Carbon Tax. Thereby
removing Polievre with the problem of a plan B.

Given what happened even in Saskatchewan last October, the sign of controlled opposition is honouring the Right of free speech more in the breach than the observance.
    To be continued…

  18. Tytler’s observations on democracy come to mind. Most western democracies are in stage 7 of 8, on the brink of bondage. The latter stages of infection by a mind virus causes its victims to supplant their own thinking with that of their overlords.

  19. I can see it now — key legislation hung up in the Senate by everyone’s favorite moral champion:

    Charles. Adler.

(And the sound of Andrew Coyne’s violin).

  20. Most pols over-promise. You have to to be elected.

I doubt that Trump will be able to accomplish half of what he has claimed he will do. He needs a compliant Congress, and that’s always problematic.

Bu Trump’s great contribution won’t be simply what he passes. His presence – his persona – has given us permission to say many things that, before him, we simply couldn’t say.

Without him, arguing for the closure of borders would still be Racist. Without him, DEI and ESG would still be “the only moral option.”

Support for him – and for the principles he espouses – has only grown since his election – because more and more people aren’t feeling like horrible troglodytes for fighting for the identity of America.

So, even if he only hits 40% of his promises, I think he’s still brought our country forward a great deal.

    1. Arguing for closing border is still racist and is also insanely destructive. Glad that you’re admitting that the Trump thing is about Boomers getting a permission structure to be their worst selves.

  21. One thing that happens when conservatives form government is, the stealing slows down.

Libranos like wine that starts around $500/bottle. Conservatives rightly don’t like wine and are happy to drink the $30/bottle domestic plonk. It’s all on the public expense account.

    Keep your expectations low.

  22. If Trump does do what he promised, there will be economic calamity and push back from the American people, including ones who foolishly voted for him.
