Telegraph- Britain’s pubs are being ‘taxed out of existence’

There were more than 60,000 pubs in Britain at the turn of the millennium, but today that number has fallen by a quarter to 45,000, according to the BBPA. Publicans have had to put up with steeper taxes, the pandemic lockdowns, surging energy prices and, most recently, Rachel Reeves’s hike in National Insurance contributions on employers, which has pushed up staff costs. The BBPA estimates that £1 in every £3 taken at the bar goes straight to the taxman: of the surviving pubs and bars, one-third are operating at a loss as a result of being so heavily taxed, the UK Hospitality trade group reckons.

Major Disappointment with Trump

Folks on the Left never criticize their leaders, no matter what they do. Their refusal to do so is cult-like and pathetic.

Trump and the Republicans betrayed Elon Musk and the American people when it came to trying to balance the budget.

This outburst here from Trump is beyond pathetic & disgraceful. Unless there is some 4D Chess being played by Trump & Elon together, then I’m very disappointed in Trump acting in such a childish, spiteful manner.

We Don’t Need No Flaming Sparky Cars

GCaptain;

The U.S. Coast Guard is responding to a fire on board the 600-foot car carrier Morning Midas carrying hundreds of electric vehicles approximately 300 miles off the coast of Alaska.

The vessel departed from Yantai, China on May 26 with destination Lázaro Cárdenas, Mexico where it was expected on June 15. According to shipping database Equasis the 2006 Morning Midas is owned by Hawthorn Navigation Inc. out of London with management by Zodiac Maritime Limited.

Zodiac Maritime has confirmed the vessel is loaded with around 3,000 vehicles, 800 of which are electric vehicles. Smoke was initially seen emanating from a deck carrying electric vehicles, according to the statement.

Related: The decommissioned buses are said to be a mixture of electric-powered and gas buses in that lot, but it’s unclear which are burning currently burning.

“Have you ever seen a grown man naked?”

Grooming 101;

During a course for high school children in Miami-Dade County, students were assigned to complete a sexuality-focused questionnaire that asked a series of bizarre questions such as: “What do you think caused your heterosexuality?”; “Is it possible that being straight is just a phase you may grow out of?”; and, “Considering the menace of hunger and overpopulation, could the human race survive if everyone were straight like yourself?”

All the way back to Beijing;

Two Chinese nationals have been accused of smuggling a fungus into the US that officials describe as a “dangerous biological pathogen”.

Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, have been charged with conspiracy, smuggling goods, false statements, and visa fraud, the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced on Tuesday.

The complaint alleges Mr Liu tried to smuggle the fungus through Detroit airport so he could study it at a University of Michigan laboratory where his girlfriend, Ms Jian, worked.

The fungus called Fusarium graminearum can cause a disease in wheat, barley, maize and rice that can wipe out crops and lead to vomiting and liver damage if it gets into food.

The fungus is described in scientific literature as a “potential agroterrorism weapon”, according to the US Attorney’s Office, adding it is responsible for “billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year.”

Officials further allege Ms Jian received funding from the Chinese government for her research on the pathogen in China. They also claim she is a member of the Chinese Communist Party.

I, For One, Welcome Our New Self-Driving Overlords

Daily Mail;

On a journey with a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle, the pair noticed the Waymo they were traveling in crept to a rolling start at a pedestrian crossing before the person had reached the other footpath.

The subtle movement was reminiscent of the way humans act behind the wheel, but a strange occurrence for the robotic Waymo, which prides itself on being safer than a driver because it errs on the side of caution and leaves no room for human error.

The action of letting the foot gently off the break moments before they should to allow the car to begin creeping forward at a rolling pace displays a sense of impatience – a human reaction not previously seen in the robotic cars.

‘From an evolutionary standpoint, you’re seeing a lot more anticipation and assertiveness from the vehicles,’ Riggs said.

Are the Wishy-Washy Elites Finally Getting Their Comeuppance?

A longtime friend and University of British Columbia (UBC) employee drew my attention to this story: Santa Ono, ex-University of Michigan president, rejected for University of Florida job. In the not too distant past, Ono was the president of the UBC.

The legacy media is, of course, trying to spin this as an anti-DEI backlash. Here’s another perspective: How about people with true, consistent values are fed up with milquetoast folks who have no real values and just say what is convenient at the moment?

In recent weeks, UK PM Keir Starmer has beclowned himself over the issue of immigration and California Governor has done the same about men participating in women’s sports. Simply put, you can’t hold a particular set of views for years, then suddenly turn on a dime, and expect people to trust you any longer.

I personally had some correspondence with Santa Ono 8 years ago. My alma mater, UBC, was looking for a donation. After receiving a bulk email from him, I responded, asking him how I could possibly donate to a university that didn’t believe in free speech. To my great surprise, he responded, saying that UBC planned to follow the Free Expression policy of the University of Chicago. As this recent lawsuit against UBC shows, Free Speech/Expression is the furthest thing from reality at UBC.

Here’s what others are saying about Ono’s rejection at the University of Florida.

Blacklock’s- Year Passes Without Registry

Cabinet yesterday would not explain its failure to enforce a bill passed by Parliament a year ago to unmask foreign agents. The Department of Public Safety had promised a foreign registry would be in place this month.

“The foreign registry was something all MPs in the previous Parliament across party lines worked to expedite,” said New Democrat MP Jenny Kwan. “But to date that Act has not yet been enacted.
