The Fretting Is Statusful, You Know

From the world of cinema and pretentious agonising:

The implications of Mr Boyle’s modish piety, presumably unintended yet implied nonetheless, are explored quite pithily in the replies.

Among which, the implication that white writers and directors should only concern themselves with suitably pale-skinned characters, carefully excluding non-white characters, and non-white actors, lest they appropriate or colonise something or other.

Needless to say, other implications come to mind.

New Rules

Another OMG sting: A U.S. State Department official responsible for reviewing visa applications has been caught on hidden camera making alarming admissions, both about his work and his biases.

“I do say it to cab drivers that are from, like, Hispanic descent, I’m like, ‘don’t talk to the police.’ Don’t admit the truth… If you want a loophole, keep your mouth shut,” said Arslan Akhtar, A U.S. State Department employee responsible for reviewing visa applications, speaking to an undercover OMG journalist. Akhtar has been caught on hidden camera admitting to helping illegal immigrants evade deportation and expressing virulent antisemitic, anti-American, and anti-Israel views, all while holding an influential role in U.S. immigration decisions.

I know you were comfortable with the old rules Arslan, but the rules have changed.

The Invoice Is In The Mail

It’s polls like these which demonstrate why Canada is not a serious country. Most voters would be happy to entertain national bankruptcy rather than let go of any aspect of the nanny state.

The poll of about 4,000 adults conducted from June 2 to June 8 said 59 per cent opposed selling Canada Post while 29 per cent favoured selling it. The margin narrowed when it came to privatization, with 47 per cent against the idea and 38 per cent for it, though that only related to certain parts of the crown corporation.

The Chinadian Broadcasting Corporation

Sam Cooper;

Canada’s state broadcaster, CBC, is facing diplomatic criticism from Taiwan after issuing a controversial correction to an explosive story regarding Chinese influence via foreign investment in Prince Edward Island—raising new questions about whether Chinese government pressure is compromising Canadian press freedom and influencing media coverage of foreign interference.

On June 14, CBC/Radio-Canada published a report on alleged ties between Bliss and Wisdom, a Buddhist group with growing land holdings on Prince Edward Island, and the Chinese Communist Party’s United Front Work Department. The report—based in part on findings from The Bureau’s contributor Garry Clement—noted deep concerns from PEI residents about the group’s agricultural land acquisitions and its alleged links to Beijing, including its reported advocacy for China’s annexation of Taiwan. […]

But on June 17, CBC issued a correction: “In that story, the reporter said Taiwan is a country that China is threatening to invade. In fact, Taiwan is a self-governing island, and there is dispute around who controls it.” No explanation was provided for the change.

That revision quickly sparked backlash in Taipei. In a statement to Taiwan News, Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said it was “regretful and disappointed” to see international media “engage in self-censorship or deliberately avoid using the term ‘country’ to refer to Taiwan due to political pressure from China or concerns about Beijing’s stance.” MOFA reportedly reiterated that Taiwan “is a sovereign and independent country, and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China,” and urged foreign media to uphold “objectivity and fairness,” warning that compromise on coverage “undermines the essence of press freedom” and distorts Taiwan’s international status.

CBC did not respond to a request for comment from Taiwan News.

The Great Ship Chinada

Cruise Mapper;

The new cruiseferry of STENA LINE has been taken off the Holyhead-Dublin route for repairs and maintenance due to engine problems – just 4 months after entering service. The ship Stena Estrid (building cost EUR 185 million) started on the route in January 2020 after being built at China’s AVIC Weihai Shipyard performing its maiden voyage as Storm Brendan raged.

Via Harman Bhangu;

The Stena Estrid broke down just months after launch—engine failure, pulled off route, major delays.

It was built at AVIC Weihai Shipyard—now called China Merchants Jinling, the same state-owned yard the NDP just hired to build BC’s new ferries.

Eby is outsourcing billions to a shipyard with a track record of breakdowns—and ties to China’s military-industrial complex.

The right people got paid, that’s all that matters.

Insane Predictions

So a warming climate will diminish crop yields? I guess that’s why corn yields in Manitoba are currently so much higher than corn yields in Iowa….oh, wait….

And if carbon pollution worsens, the loss of calories across the same six staples — corn, wheat, rice, soybeans, sorghum and cassava — rises to nearly a quarter by century’s end, the researchers reported in Nature.

More generally, every additional degree Celsius of warming reduces the world’s ability to produce food from these crops by 120 calories per person per day, or nearly five percent of current daily consumption, they calculated.

New Governor, Same As The Old Governor

Tristan Hopper: If Iran collapses, regime officials likely to flee to Canada

That’s according to security analyst Casey Babb, and it follows a lengthy track record of Canada serving as a covert haven for Iranian regime officials.

“We know that over the last several years, many, many senior officials of the Iranian regime, despite inadmissibility laws, have already made it in here,” Babb, a senior fellow with the MacDonald Laurier Institute, said in an interview this week with The Ben Mulroney Show.

As such, Babb said that if the Islamic Republic’s ruling class finds itself sent into exile, they “know how to get into Canada.”

As recently as April, the Canada Border Services Agency reported that 20 Iranians who had served in high-level positions with the Tehran government have been found to be living in Canada. According to Global News, only one of those has been successfully deported, although others have left voluntarily.

That ought to help those trade negotiations.

Meanwhile, across the pond The “Lebanese grill” in London is using footage of Iranian missile strikes on Israeli civilians to promote its restaurant.

Our NATO Ally

Robert Spencer;

The flagship newspaper of the Greek-American community, The National Herald, reported Wednesday that Turkey “has provoked Greece by submitting a map to UNESCO claiming parts of the Aegean Sea – which has been the primary point of contention and discussions between the countries during a period of calm.”

The UNESCO map was a manifestation of Erdogan’s “Blue Homeland” doctrine, which includes Turkey’s claims to sovereignty over various lands that once belonged to the Ottoman Empire. Erdogan refuses to recognize the Treaty of Lausanne, which ceded the Aegean islands in question now to Greece, despite the fact that the Republic of Turkey duly ratified the treaty on Aug. 23, 1923, as well as the fact that Turkey and Greece are both members of NATO and thus are supposed to be allies.

Erdogan appears to be calculating that he will not get any pushback within NATO for claiming the internationally recognized sovereign territory of another member state, and he is likely right about that. This isn’t the first time he has claimed Greek territory, and almost certainly will not be the last, yet Turkey doesn’t seem to be in any danger of losing its NATO membership.
