The world needs more Canada?

Lorne Gunter, one of our best columnists, poops on the Liberals’ (and many others’, including academics and pundits who should know better) parade:

Libs believe the world waits for Canada’s Egypt stance
A daydream, courtesy of Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Bob Rae [a pretty smart fellow these days, good on Afstan, but still drinking some of that Kool-Aid]…
In a fireworks’ burst of elation, pro-democracy protestors erupt with joy. Canada has spoken. The crisis is averted. Ruefully, but non-violently, pro-Mubarak forces drop their shoulders and slink out of Tahrir square. What is there left for them to do? Canada has had its say. That settles everything. There is now no hope of preserving the regime. They know Canada’s intervention has settled the matter definitively.
Peace and democracy break out and everyone lives happily ever after.
Of course, all of the above is a mocking hallucination…
For 40 years, the Liberals have deluded themselves into believing that the world looks to Canada as its moral beacon because of the Liberals’ enlightened international policies. It was never so, but the Grits cling to this daydream even now…

Or as I put it elsewhere recently with reference to Jumpin’ Jack Layton and Afstan:

…
As for “our experience in resolving conflicts”, can anyone name any serious international conflict in, say, the last twenty years that Canada has played a major role in sorting out? To my mind yet another example of many Canadians’ thoughtless, in fact ignorant, ego(t)ism. Blowing a horn that only we hear; check the index of non-Canadian books on international issues.

Why “Progressives” Should Always Remain in Quotes

Here’s a most educational video from a recent “progressive” rally in Palm Springs, California. It was sponsored by Common Cause, The Ruckus Society, Greenpeace, Code Pink, the Progressive Democrats of America, and others. Watch the peace & love spew forth:

“Progressives” say the darndest things don’t they? It’s interesting how, when you let them open up their hearts & minds, you too often find absolute darkness and unparalleled hatred towards all who disagree with them. Plus, the added bonus of being a “progressive” is that you never have to say you’re sorry for … anything! Undoubtedly, if any of these folks were called out for what they’d said, they would have been “joking” and wondered why YOU don’t have a sense of humour.

In T. Boone Pickens Heaven …

… you buy power from Mexico:

Mexico’s state electricity company on Wednesday started supplying electricity to the US state of Texas, where demand shot up amid unusually cold temperatures and caused power outages.
Mexico’s Federal Electricity Commission “was determined to support Texas with electrical energy faced with the problems the state is suffering due to climatological conditions,” a statement said.
An energy transfer of 280 megawatts began at midday (1800 GMT) via the north Mexican border cities of Nuevo Laredo, Reynosa and Piedras Negras, it added.

I guess someone forgot to tell them that for every electron of bird chopper power installed, you need an electron of conventional power on standby. Those Natural Gas power plants they didn’t build must be looking pretty good about now.

Interesting Insight into the Situation in Egypt

Marshall Stocker is a most interesting and extremely well spoken American who runs a company called Freedom Economics. He has been living in Egypt but just returned to the U.S. a few days ago. Yesterday he was on Dennis Miller’s radio program and elucidated the audience with a first hand account of what has been happening in Egypt. It’s well worth a listen.

Update: I received a link to the following Facebook group from an Egyptian friend. Some of the photos & videos are quite disturbing but most interesting to see nonetheless.

The Ziploc Rebellion

I’m starting to think that not occupying schoolyards with pitchforks and burning tires is a failed parent-teacher night.

Recently, Felix began crying when his mom went to pack his lunch in a resealable plastic bag. When asked what the trouble was, Felix told his parents that his kindergarten class had had a draw for a stuffed toy, but that he had been excluded from the contest because his teacher had found a plastic sandwich bag in his lunch kit. So he pleaded with his mom not to make him an enviro-criminal again.

More Pavilions At Folkfest

A Mississauga businesswoman whose home was ordered seized to pay an Ontario Human Rights Tribunal award to a former employee can keep her house — for now. […] That October 2009 decision ordered Telfer to pay $36,000 to a woman who had been her employee for six weeks. Lawyers wanted the sheriff to seize and sell Telfer’s home to collect the money.
The woman who lodged the complaint, Seema Saadi, told the tribunal she felt pressured to wear skirts and heels instead of her hijab. Saadi also said Telfer complained about the smell of food that she warmed in the microwave.

“And how are things in crosshair country?”, I asked.

Uri Goldflam replies via email,

What I find most amazing is the speed in which Europe and Obama drop-kicked Mubarak, the dictator they’ve been supporting and funding for the past 30 years, and embraced the “young forces of democracy and freedom” – not really considering that the only organized and well disciplined alternative who have an extremely broad based popular support are the Muslim Brotherhood.
I mean, seriously, lets say there are 250 thousand 20-30 somethings – educated, jobless, pro-western – that understand the democratic process. What about the other 79,750,000 ??? Does anyone really believe that they will weigh the options and choose one of the opposition parties?
They will go to the lowest common denominator. the “Oneness”. The Quran.
So this is what we have to look forward to – a hegemonic Iran, a radicalizing Gulf (where al Jazeera comes from), a wahabi Saudi Arabia, a fundamentalist Suni Egypt, a destabilized Jordan, a radical Syria, and a Hizbullastan in Lebanon.
Since America is considered weak and unreliable (thank you BO!) the Arab world will turn to China and Russia.
And Obama still thinks his biggest problem is a Jewish kindergarten in the West Bank…
