Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten calls for the removal of article 266b of the Danish penal code, which restricts speech on the putative grounds of racism.
Excerpt (translated):
“By removing these articles, Denmark could take pride in being a European frontrunner in protecting freedom of expression. In this way, Denmark can show the fundamentalists of offense-taking that there are better and more civilized ways to organize a multicultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious society than constructing new limitations to our freedom as European societies become more pluralistic and new minorities are arriving. By doing so, Denmark would also send the European Union a clear signal that the more diverse a society becomes with respect to culture and religion, the more important it becomes that this development be accompanied by a variety of expressions.
“This is something long understood in the United States of America, but this understanding does not seem to have dawned in any European governments.”
(…)
“The Danish article about racism (§ 266b) was originally created as a reaction to European anti-Semitism of the 1930s. It made it possible to punish those spreading false rumours and accusations against a population group and thus incite hatred and persecutions. The article was meant to be used to counter lies, like the classical anti-Semitic legend that Jews drink the blood of Christian children and other nonsense.
“The article was not meant to be a tool to shut the mouth of those having politically incorrect opinions…”

History’s plaything

Here’s a question to all who have logged on to SDA today (and I am 100% serious!), have you noticed any unusual background audio such as birds chirping, perhaps people shuffling and moving stuff around, etc. ? Whatever it is, it’s triggerred and lasts for 5 or 10 minutes whenever I click on ‘comments’ to read commentary.
Never happened before, but it’s been that way all day.
Anyone else experience this?
Snagg — It’s that sad monkey video. It autoplays after you’ve watched it once.
Yukon- Ok, I don’t remember where I might have done that. Now, how do I kill the sob?
Any help much appreciated.
It’s called auditory sublimation…National Geographic does it well.
For those that don’t care for the 1950’s “green” automobile, how about some Zil truck racing in Russia:

What about the flying cars?
They promised us we would have flying cars by now.
Hey Snagglepuss, relax, 😉 don’t feel bad. I thought I was loosing it and it took me a half an hour to figure out what was shaking and I do not remember ever hitting play button. Maybe it knew I wanted to look at it later.
Cute little car. It would fit nicely in the back of my Sierra.
When Suzuki first entered the North American automobile market I must admit to buying one of those little jeeps….it fit in the back of my truck.
I think an election may not be too far away: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/tories-to-overturn-crtc-decision-on-bandwith-billing/article1892522/
I’ll bet you that little car probably generated more air pollution per mile than a modern Ford F-150 with a V-8.
Yukon, Synchro, Ken- Relax? RELAX??
Is this like the evil monkey in Chris’s closet on Family Guy? Only perceptible to its hapless patsy?
You can see him, can’t you?
Now, how can I make him dead?
Snagglepuss – you kill the monkeys by moving your mouse to the time bar at the bottom of the little picture-box and dragging the going-along-thingee to the end.
Snagglepuss: ” … audio such as birds chirping, perhaps people shuffling and moving stuff around, etc. ?”
I read somewhere that’s what a brain tumor sounds like.
Thanks Mamba, tried that (several times, in fact), but still persists. And it definitely is the background sound of the NG monkey tapes.
Maybe Infinity2 has it right though. I hope not.
I’ll shut down system completely- that’ll snuff ’em.

That wee “Peardrop” car is really neat. Whatever became of it? Was there a decent production run?
Hey, he dead now!! :~D))
I’m glad that you got out of the monkey business, Snagglepuss. Thank-you for the link to David Warren, Revnat Dream. Warren has a frightening and thought provoking take on the Egyptian Crisis – and I fear that his take on the situation is not incorrect. I wish America had a different President! I miss GWB more than ever before.

“We Spent Billions on Wind Power… and All I Got Was a Rolling Blackout”
“The Electric Reliability Council of Texas said 7,000 megawatts of generating capacity tripped [“tripped” means failed]Tuesday night, leaving the state without enough juice. That’s enough capacity to power about 1.4 million homes. By rotating outages, ERCOT said it prevented total blackouts.
“We have the double whammy of extremely high demand, given the lowest temperatures in 15 years, combined with generation that’s been compromised and is producing less than expected or needed,” said Oncor spokeswoman Catherine Cuellar. Oncor operates power lines in North Texas and facilitated the blackouts for ERCOT.

The article didn’t give a clue as to what generating capability failed, but I can make a pretty good guess: Wind energy.”

“Check Out The Incredible Spike In The Price Of Electricity In Texas Today”
“The weather story is having a big impact on companies and associated commodities today, but this may be the biggest move we’ve seen thus far.
In Texas, the price of electricity has surged as a result of the recent storm.
The rolling blackouts started Wednesday as a result of the weather, and have continued today, according to the Wall Street Journal.
But just what does that look like for energy markets? ERCOT (Energy Reliability Council of Texas) has seen on peak prices in its Northern Territory spike as high as $330.64 per megawatt hour today.
Just yesterday those prices were at $70. In the days before, they were trading between $34 and $45.”

“A more appalling caricature of freedom of thought cannot be imagined.”
“. . . in the background, unseen, the new forces are fighting one another by buying the press.”
“. . . in the background, unseen, the new forces are fighting one another by buying the press. No tamer has his animals more under his power. Unleash the people as reader-mass and it will storm through the streets and hurl itself upon the target indicated, terrifying and breaking windows; a hint to the press-staff and it will become quiet and go home. . . . A more appalling caricature of freedom of thought cannot be imagined.”
“The systematic enforcement of controlled agitation requires a constant drum-beat of inflammatory slogans and shifting targets, a process that Orwell elsewhere likens to a blow-torch, which can be turned in any direction at will. In Spengler’s words, “What the Press wills, is true. Its commanders evoke, transform, interchange truths,” and “the needle of public opinion,” precise as any gauge, swings round to the new party line. As in 1984, agitprop is cynically directed toward the thought-control of entire populations by “The dictature of party leaders” who aim to bring people “en masse . . . under their own mind-training” for the sake of limitless power. For Spengler, this dynamic recalls the rigorous “expression-will of early Gothic . . . but cold, controlled, and Civilized” in the worst sense of the word. On June 18, 1940, four days before the fall of France, Churchill exploited the conventional picture of the Gothic to the same effect when he warned England that,
if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new Dark Age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science.
By 1940, the word “civilized” had indeed taken on a sinister meaning. In a grim corroboration of Churchill’s speech, Orwell begins The Lion and the Unicorn with the following terse remark: “As I write, highly civilised human beings are flying overhead trying to kill me.””

“WaPo: Muslim Brotherhood ‘Inspired’ By YMCA
Big Journalism ^ | 2/2/2011 | Dana Loesch, Ed.
I can’t make this up.
Inspired by the YMCA when it was founded in 1928, the Muslim Brotherhood has been under a ban since 1948, and its real size is difficult to gauge. The group was brutally repressed by President Gamal Abdel Nasser in the 1950s and 1960s. Since then, it has at times been propped up as a foil – especially for Western audiences – with periodic crackdowns that have sent many of its members to prison.
In what way was the Muslim Brotherhood “inspired by” the YMCA?
