…to save the world, the aboriginals behind Idle No More want to stop Bill C-45, and along with it to force the government to recognize that Canada belongs to the Indians and anyone else who is here are “settlers” who need to get the permission of the aboriginals to do anything on the land. Magnotta was elected Newsmaker of the Year even though he didn’t receive a single vote from a newsroom in Quebec, where much of the story was anchored.
Quebec had several big news stories in 2012, including the months-long student protests, the explosive Charbonneau Commission looking into corruption, and the shooting only metres away from Pauline Marois on the night she returned the Parti Quebecois to power.
“As news goes there were certainly far more significant issues that touched our nation,” Doyle MacKinnon, the Lethbridge Herald’s managing editor, said in explaining why he chose Magnotta.
MacKinnon said it’s a sad commentary that men such as Magnotta and former colonel Russell Williams become household names while many Canadians don’t know who the recently canonized Kateri Tekakwitha is.
“But the fact is,” he said, “the truly reviled invariably make bigger news than the moderately revered.”

“Invariably”. As though the “news” just flies out their asses on its own.

With Congress and the White House currently concentrating their laser-like focus on averting (or not averting, as the case may be) the fiscal cliff, the fate of various tax extenders is still very much up in the air, including the wind industry’s precious production tax credit (which covers about 30 percent of wind power’s costs — no wonder they’re so keen on keeping it around). The wind lobby is working overtime to convince Congress to pass an extension before the clock runs out on December 31st, but most lawmakers’ concerns are about the bigger fish we still need to fry before the end of the year.

When you total up all working age Americans that do not have a job in America today, it comes to more than 100 million.

After a 25-year ban, California sea otters are now free to float along the entire coast without being captured and hauled back to Northern California.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ended its “Southern Sea Otter Translocation Program” on Tuesday, Dec. 18, which forbid otters from paddling south of Point Conception — where the Santa Barbara Channel meets the Pacific Ocean — to the Mexican border.
