Dogs With No Names has implanted 155 dogs so far and Dr. Samson-French said they’ve likely prevented 100,000 puppies. The charity is now conducting a full-scale study of the program and plans to publish the results.
I’ll bet it’s a doozy.
Addendum: I blame the White Man, actually. This wasn’t a problem until Europeans arrived and convinced the Red Man to stop eating dog meat.

Well if you extend the time line long enough 155 dogs could have 100,000 descendants, but it would have to be a long, long, long time.
I spent three + years in the Arctic in a small village and we did not have a dog catcher or a Vet.
But we did have a dog shooter and every spring and fall the packs were culled.
Simple, inexpensive, effective.
If 155 dogs could produce 100K puppies “given a long enough timeline”, the world would be swimming in dogs – literally. It’s activist junk math.

I agree the math cited for the potential offspring is fantastic, but I will say that this is exactly the sort of thing that should be done by private charities. If the efforts are well-received by the reserve dwellers, as the story suggests, and if the members and donors of the charity feel fulfilled by doing this work, then more power to them, as long as their “work” doesn’t evolve into activism aimed at plundering my pocket for tax dollars to carry out the work.

I was making a sarcastic point about the math in the article. Indians have had dogs before the arrival of Europeans. If the consequences of uncontrolled reproduction were as dire as these nutcases claim, you wouldn’t be able to move without bumping into a stray.
My friend and 2 of my sons were hunting alongside one of the reserves. We stopped in for a visit with the landowner. He was telling us about a pack of dogs from the reserve that had killed thirty or forty sheep at the neighbors the night before and had been taking calves from others as well. As he was telling us about it the pack of dogs ran past the front window. He became very animated and yelled “there they are”. We all jumped up grabbed our rifles and ran down the road “culling the pack”. We got four out of the six that were there. Made for a rather exciting beginning to our “deer hunt” that year.
At 6 puppies per litter, and 2 litters per year, and assuming that a bitch can have a first litter at 12 months, and assuming that all the puppies survive, then it is possible for 155 bitches to give rise to over 100,000 offspring in about 4 years. There are alot of assumptions though.
Yes,on the Reserves I lived near in the 50’s and 60’s wild/stray dogs were simply shot and no one thought any more about them. And if a kid was attacked,every dog that wasn’t tied up or in a house was shot on sight.
I was walking down a road near Port Hardy back in the 70’s and was attacked by a pack of about nine Rez dogs,figured I was in deep sh*t. I grabbed a couple of big rocks and hurled them in desperation at the pack while they were still about 100 feet away. The first rock hit one of the lead dogs,he hit the brakes, turned and ran and the whole pack turned and ran like hell after him.

At 2 billion dogs, with 640 reserves across Canada, that would be an AVERAGE of three million, one-hundred and twenty-five thousand dogs per reserve.

Which ain’t 2-3 billion, unless you’re talking about litters (average 8), which would be 2,579,200,000 — which would fall into the range suggested.

I know a bit about this program and a couple of others that attempt to deal with the dog problem on the local reserves. There are several challenges, one being whites from the city who simply abandon dogs on the local reserve lands. Believe me, we know it happens. There’s also a “que sera sera” attitude amongst the natives on the reserves so that free spay/neuter programs have met with limited response from sheer apathy amongst many natives. Animal Rescue Foundation (from whom we fostered and adopted in one case (the dogs, pups especially, make great pets)) which attempts to shelter and find good homes for some of the dogs simply can’t keep up with the numbers involved. So the attempt at feeding and pharmacologically neutering the animals is a new initiative which seems to be showing some promise.
Wether or not the vet was quoted accurately, (I’m always a bit skeptical) the fact is that the people involved are, for the most part, pretty level-headed. I hope this initiative is successful as it’s the unwanted critters that suffer most in the current situation.

John, did you ever miss Kate’s point. The title ‘Math is Hard’ should have been your first clue. She’s saying that the numbers being put forth are unbelievably and impossibly large. Remember that she has been breeding champion dogs since she was a teenager, so she knows whereof she speaks.
First they state that there are approximately 1 million dogs on reserves. Later they state that sterilizing 155 bitches prevents the birth of 100,000 puppies. That’s 645 puppies per bitch, an impossible number for one generation. Going back to the estimate of 1,000,000 dogs if half of them are bitches and each will have 645 puppies well 500,000 x 645 equals 322,580,645 puppies. That’s 322 million puppies, an impossible number. Get the point? Kate was mocking the white people in the story for their lack of understanding of animal husbandry and mathematics.
Perhaps you should take a deep breath and check your statement for prejudice?
There are literally armed clashes between concerned residents of Moscow, Russia, who are trying to control stray dog packs in the city, and bleeding heart greenies who want dogs to have same rights as humans. Thankfully, poisoning cannot be easily undone and the concerned residents seem to be winning. They have to poison the packs and burn the lairs built for the dogs by the bleeding heart types with gasoline.
Having said that, a guy with Mini 14 could have solved dog problem on reserve within a week and probably not even charged reserve more than for a few boxes of ammo. This problem is totally manufactured.

I will concede that I didn’t bother with the precise calculation when writing the intro sentence. I just didn’t think it was necessary – the intent was to match the junk math in the quote with equal hyperbole.

There’s an old or maybe not so old military comment for almost every bureaucratic situation which moves the situation beyond either comprehension or to a something that’s there but doesn’t do anything. The saying :”out screwing the dog” seems appropriate, the number of dogs is not germane.
The number of children being screwed out of a chance at a real life; literally and figuratively is the intent of the string. For decades if not for a century or more the most inept bureaucrats were given the “Indian File”. Chretien tried to do something genuine with it and when PMPT decided the French fact of Canada was more important Chretien slunk off in a pout and no one would pick it up.
At least no one until PMSH started to move it up the priority scale. Finally something is being done. It won’t be pretty, but I don’t give a darn which politically correct news media takes umbrage, I just hope the matter stays on the front burner until the result is proud; assimilated aboriginal children, as Chretien said was necessary forty years ago, is finally established.

So far as I know Aborigines can pretty much kill any animal they like. Northern Affairs used even to provide them with free bullets. So these feral packs of dogs are unnecessary – best use them to provide the kids with target practice.
And if the Aborigines in communities afflicted with feral dogs don’t do away with the dogs, then they will be afflicted with a far worse fate: feral packs of go-gooders, possibly armed with lawyers. I believe something similar happened in Siberia – there was a considerable population of bears in one area, who got on more or less with the local Aborigines. Then American go-gooders began to be attracted. The Aborigines drew the correct conclusions, and killed all the bears, leaving only the dried gall bladders for the do-gooders. It was cruel and ruthless treatment for the bears, but what else could the Aborigines have done? Hunting humans is illegal.

That being said, feral dogs are pretty smart – there being a high premium for not being a dumbass canine when your life depends on it – so I suspect that shooting them, or poisoning them would be less effective than you think.
The survivors would reproduce and re-fill the ecosystem placed pretty quickly. Chemically spaying them like this is probably pretty effective (or shooting them), if you can saturate a reserve, but since the locals seem unable to control their own “nonferal” dogs from reproducing uncontrollably, that wouldn’t last too long.
The ferals would die off and be replaced by “New gen” ferals from pets as the doggy ecosystem opened up.
Basically the human locals have to clue in and keep poochy from getting laid at every heat cycle. THAT’s what solves that problem.
