The Sound Of Settled Science

Pacific Standard;

…there’s probably no field of journalism that’s less skeptical, less critical, less given to investigative work, and less independent of its sources than science reporting. At even the most respected publications, science journalists tend to position themselves as translators, churning the technical language of scientific papers into summaries that are accessible to the public. The assumption is that the source text they’re translating–the original scientific research–comes to them as unimpeachable fact.

Oilsands workers call on Alberta government to retrain electricians as solar installation specialists; (new link)

A company called Iron & Earth is asking the provincial government to help support its Solar Skills campaign, a project that aims to train 1,000 electricians from the oilsands sector to install solar panels on 100 public buildings, making their skills marketable across the energy sector.
“Now is definitely the time to be launching this organization,” said Iron & Earth founder Lliam Hildebrand,

Life taken too soon – Terror attacks and Rob Ford’s death on budget day

The terror attacks in Brussels, cancer in Toronto, both took life too soon. On an already busy news day these events make you take stock. Normally the federal budget is the biggest story, event on Tuesday pushed it to third on Brian’s list.
Listen as Brian talks budget with David Akin, Rob Ford with Joe Warmington and hears from a socialist on how the budget isn’t mean enough to well off Canadians.
Also Brian juxtaposes Stephen Harper on terrorism to Justin Trudeau.

Great Moments In Socialism

Colby Cosh;

Only a fool could ever have imagined that Edmonton or any other large city would “end homelessness,” in 10 years or 20 or 30, except by means of fascist methods or wild, unforeseeable social change. Nevertheless, this sappy utopian vision got a bunch of now-superannuated Alberta politicians celebrated for their heroic vision-y-ness. No one is now eager to point out their humiliating total failure — to point out that an entire professional class collectively promised the public something specific, and came nowhere close to delivering. They did not deliver half of what they promised. Not a quarter. Not a tenth.

There was a man in his 20’s pan-handling just inside the lobby of the Walmart Monday evening. At the doors on the other side of the store was a listing of their job vacancies.

Let The Indictments BEGIN! – Updated for Contest Winners

SDA GETS RESULTS! – Saskatoon City Council has wisely chosen to back down. Thanks everyone for your entries, especially those who took the time to slap together a photoshopped version.
That said, some of the entries were kind of lame. Or they missed the point entirely — which was to subject Saskatoon City Council to the best bullying a free book can buy.
But a promise is a promise: Your winners!

ISIS, genocide and why Trudeau’s Liberals won’t say the word

The US and the EU have declared that ISIS is guilty of genocide, so why won’t Justin Trudeau’s Liberals? Brian explores what Trudeau and the gang are saying about genocide, religious persecution, religious freedom, refugees and how they all relate. Plus Simon Kent of Breitbart London on Brexit, Ray Heard on The Globe refusing to use the word terrorist and Brian let’s loose on the labour minister for being ignorant and incompetent. Oh, and that police board meeting on morale and other problems at the Ottawa Police service.

Those Who Can’t Do, Teach

“The truth is 66% of the “entrepreneurship professors'” resumes I searched had NO experience in being entrepreneurs. The vast majority of them, like all their professor brethren, were the epitome of “those who can’t do, teach.” Merely bystanders, spectators, studiers-of, and observers of real entrepreneurs in the real world making real change. Simply the marching band who lacked the talent, skill, and work ethic required to make it on the football team.

EPA Putting Red Light on Amateur Car Racing;

A “power grab” by the Environmental Protection Agency threatens to crash America’s amateur car-racing industry without putting so much as a dent in climate change, warns the chairman of the House Space, Science and Technology Committee.
The EPA’s move to regulate emissions on non-road racing vehicles contradicted agency administrator Gina McCarthy’s earlier testimony that the EPA did not have authority over non-road race cars and motorcycles.
EPA officials said they are “clarifying” emissions law, yet the Clean Air Act has long exempted non-road vehicles used in competition. The agency has not made a similar move against NASCAR or other professional race circuits.

They know not to mess with the donor class.
