American States: Economic Competitiveness vs. Political Leanings

Yesterday a Democrat friend posted on Facebook about “how obvious” it was that liberal (ie. Democrat) run states were much more prosperous than conservative ones. I was curious about this statement so decided to check the facts. Using this link and this one, I compiled a table of the 10 most and 10 least economically competitive states:

Incidentally, I passed on this information to my friend but have not heard a peep back from him about it. Imagine if a major news outlet had published a similar headline. How many people would bother to investigate? Yet after seeing multiple MSM outlets repeat the same things over & over again, it’s easy to see how people’s opinions get quickly shaped.
Update: Tim made an excellent comment which deserves follow-up. To further the discussion, here is the NY Times article he referred to, along with this rebuttal to it.

  1. No surprise to conservatives. But then, we’re conservative because we know things (as opposed to only feeling things).

  2. Wow ! That table reveals that Democrat States would be more productive if they could just get MORE taxpayer money … (sarc. off).

  3. Curiously, Texas seems to be absent from the top 10. Perhaps if you do this on an upswing of crude oil value, they’d break the top 10. Maybe not. North Dakota is up there due to Fracking, probably.
I’m also curious why Montana is doing so poorly. My guess is that their economy is tied closely to agriculture…and they are dealing with low wheat prices as well as juggling the EPA’s unelected regulation bonanza.

  4. Kinda tells us those less prosperous are more dependent on the state just the way the Liberal left like it to keep their voting base strong.

  5. That’s great and all, Robert, but you’re assuming that the American Legislative Exchange Council’s economic ranking list is the undisputed authority on prosperity. Perhaps your friend was referring to the recent article in the New York times entitled “The Path to Prosperity is Blue”. I suspect the source will immediately dissuade you, but I challenge you to argue against its central points.
(I would post the link to the article, but my comment will then go to moderation)

  6. You know what jumped off the page in the article that you linked ? 11 million … and 2006. In 2006, the “estimated” number of illegals in the US was 11 million. The “estimate” is STILL given as 11 million 10 years later, and nearly 8 years through an ILLEGAL Obama admin. Aren’t we about due for an updated “estimate” ? And what of their anchor-offspring ? We know that ALL forms of illegals reproduce at 4x the rate of native Americans. The ONLY immigration crisis we face … is an Illegal open-border.

  7. Montana is no longer a “strong republican” state. A lot of imported progressives and a dramatic decline in their education system (ranked third in the nation 30 years ago when I graduated, now in the middle at best) have changed the politics. They even elected Tester who the proggies put right up there with Fauxahontis. The oilfields have also closed down.

  8. Progressives don’t bother to check their “facts” just searching for whatever inane talking point they think proves their argument: 97% of scientists agree, governments manage economies, NDP governments are good governments, debt makes you rich.
This is just SOP. Expect a tearful withdrawal attack because of your microeconomic aggressions triggered by confusion why lies aren’t accepted.
Followed by projection everything they are: ignorant, racist, conceited and just plain mean.

  9. Tim, argue against it’s central “points”?
Don’t have to, ***Economic performance is measured in the lives of individuals, not aggregates.***, the article shoots it’s self in the foot with that statement. Economics is NOT about feeling, it involves hard math. And the nonsense about the education………………
Try understanding how “research” for such studies SHOULD be done. Hopey changy is not the answer!

  10. The NYT article’s criteria is hilarious as well. The 2nd criteria for economic prosperity is how much tax the top 1% pays. We all know that’s a solid economic indicator! A self fulfilling prophecy if there ever was one. If you think high taxes leads to economic growth and you say the criteria for evaluating the growth is the tax rate itself you could prove yourself right every time.

  11. Winston Churchill
“We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into
prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying
to lift himself up by the handle.”

  12. This is one of those conversations where both sides can look stupid. The terms republican and democrat (conservative and liberal) are not absolute terms, they are relative and they change over time.
What does appear real is that rural areas tend to be more conservative than urban areas. The greater the population, the more people look to government to solve their problems.
What has been disappointing to me is the promise by conservatives of less government and the promise by liberals of better government. Both have been a lie.

  13. That would be impossible to figure how many illegals are here presently. I mean, they are hidden in the shadows doing jobs Americans won’t do.
When they’re not too busy raping, mugging, robbing, drunk driving over people and consuming welfare and resources that should do to citizens.

  14. “What has been disappointing to me is the promise by conservatives of less government and the promise by liberals of better government. Both have been a lie.”
Exactly. Both in Canada and the US.
It does appear that the rot of progressive leftism is slowly but surely taking over in all areas of our society.

  15. Ontario would need a forklift bucket to haul Wynne’s arse and debt laden books off the ground. When Notley is finished with Alberta they won’t be laughing either.

  16. Milwaukee is an interesting place to look at the Blue / Red divide. Stay at home married women with kids are the stalwart Republican supporters followed next by old white men.

Blacks congregating in the city, voting Democrat, whites fleeing to the suburbs, voting Republican.
Detroit, Chicago, Ferguson…heading in that direction. I’d rather be leading the white stay-at-home moms.

  17. I agree…

The Vancouver-based restaurant chain came under fire when it announced it would start sourcing its beef from an American ranch accredited by the non-profit group Humane Farm Animal Care. After sales plunged by 30 per cent at some locations, Earls said sorry and put Canadian beef back on the menu.
    up yours, lame stream..

  18. Anyone needing a good laugh to start another good week.
Go to the post above this and listen to the bee attack.
    hilarious…
    Still laughing..

  19. I’m very surprised Illinois (Land Of Obama) didn’t get into the bottom 10.
This place is a disaster. Lowest bond ratings, high unemployment, muy no bueno.

  20. Whoever decided to label Oregon “light Democrat” has single-handedly cast extreme doubt on the credibility of the whole thing.

  21. Sort-of-Mad Max said “I’m very surprised Illinois (Land Of Obama) didn’t get into the bottom 10. This place is a disaster. Lowest bond ratings, high unemployment, muy no bueno.”
First thing I thought after looking at the bottom 10. How IL is not on it is beyond me.

  22. When liberals say that the most prosperous states are liberal, they don’t ask themselves how that came about. I would argue the prosperity came first, and then the leftism came like a plague of locusts. They also neglect to ask whether the most productive people in those blue states are conservative or liberal. I know the answer to that question.
