Deep Impact

By the numbers. Read it all.

The Pew Research Center reported on November 10, “Newspapers are a critical part of the American news landscape, but they have been hit hard as more and more Americans consume news digitally. The industry’s financial fortunes and subscriber base have been in decline since the mid-2000s, and their website audience traffic has begun to decline as well.”

Let us fact-check that. The total circulation of all newspapers in the United States is 20 million. That is one newspaper sold for every 16 people. Even if 3 people read each newspaper, that means more than 80% of the country does not read a newspaper.

Just 14 years ago circulation was 45 million.

Online readership for the top 50 newspapers topped 13 million in 2020 and slid below 9 million two years later. Perhaps the return of President Trump to the ballot in November will restore the 13 million but even then newspaper circulation in print and online will reach only 33 million.

Pew Research Center also reported, “The total estimated advertising revenue for the newspaper industry in 2022 was $9.8 billion, based on the Center’s analysis of financial statements for publicly traded newspaper companies. This is down 5% from 2021, a slight drop. Total estimated circulation revenue was $11.6 billion, compared with $11.5 billion in 2020.”

A drop of only 5%?

Adjusted for inflation, that’s a big deal.

It took them long enough, but it seems the New Yorker has finally caught up with SDA.

Happy Birthday

To a Canadian icon.

Sun- Nice thing about free speech is we can say this: Happy 90th birthday, Don Cherry!

This may be the most important part of what the Cherry saga exposed. There is a double standard in Canada, where conservatives are not allowed to express their views the same way as progressives.

Some can wear blackface or fire a female Indigenous cabinet minister who won’t break the law to protect the government or call people names far worse than using the words “you people” and yet keep rolling.

Free speech, not coaching the Boston Bruins, is what defined Cherry and why he was so popular. In the end, he showed there is only freedom of speech tolerated if it’s allowed by the mob, and he went out with his head held high because he did not buckle to their pile on.

Time To Call In The First Mounted Division Of His Majesty’s Stompy McStompy

Its an insurrection.

Federal ministers said Tuesday they are monitoring for blockades of critical roads and infrastructure as striking federal workers made good on a promise to ramp up their picket efforts by disrupting traffic and limiting access to office buildings in downtown Ottawa.

More than 150,000 federal public servants with the Public Service Alliance of Canada were on strike for the seventh straight day as their union representatives continued to negotiate with the government for a bigger wage increase and more flexibility to work remotely.

Around the National Capital Region, hundreds of striking workers made their presence felt and heard, circling buildings, chanting through megaphones and blasting music throughout the morning.

Hundreds of public servants marched across the Portage Bridge between Ottawa and Gatineau, Que., where some of the biggest federal buildings are located, holding up traffic for a short period Tuesday morning.

Via email – “I am in close proximity to the walking route for the picket line. Every time a semi goes by there are a number of different picketers who give the classic “air horn” hand gesture to get trucks to honk.”

Solidarity! Striking federal workers could continue getting regular salaries while on the picket line
