Facebook/Instagram (meta)- Changes to News Availability on Our Platforms in Canada
Updated on June 22nd, 2023
Today, we are confirming that news availability will be ended on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada prior to the Online News Act (Bill C-18) taking effect.
We have repeatedly shared that in order to comply with Bill C-18, passed today in Parliament, content from news outlets, including news publishers and broadcasters, will no longer be available to people accessing our platforms in Canada.

Can they all lose here?
Hard to say which organization I despise more, except I can voluntarily refuse to use the Tech Lords Gifts, while turning Canada into another Hermit Kingdom is almost too funny.
This is a perfect example of Actions over words.
Both groups are users of sweet words, professing their “Best intentions and desire to ‘serve’ you…Their actions, show an entirely different beast.
So the first question ..Is this a result desired by Dear Leader and his manipulators?
Who is served by cutting the truly low interest citizenry off from Canadian News?
What is Canadian News?
Is the reporting of actual events, still news?
Or is only events supporting the sacred narrative worthy of comment?
And?
If an organization outside of Canada, reports on events within Canada, is this still “Canadian Content”?
If the “Buffalo Chronicle” reports, can Alphabet now run it?
For now this is “American Content”.
Or does Dear Leader Inc,now believe they own the trademark on “Canada”?
Of course ,if the TechLords had chosen free speech, from the beginning, they would not now be awash in Fart Checkers and Narrative Correctors..And thus free to mock the kind of creatures that would even dare propose a Bill C18.
For example, they can run with CBC “reports” endlessly and never run crosswise of C18..
because CBC is not “News”.
State Propaganda never qualifies as “News”,except within The State of Thuggery” at question.
The gov is attempting to impose CanCon on the Internet. Regardless of what side you line up on it just isn’t possible (for some of the reasons you list). What I like about this story is that Meta is telling Canada “sorry but we screw you”.
I guess we will not have internets here in Canaduh. Oh well. Now get back to your digging, proles.
I prefer we get our news exclusively from the government or its paid subsidiaries anyway. They know what’s best for us, and for all of Canada.
EXCELSIOR!
It will be interesting to see what unintended ramifications occur as a result of Bill C-18. My guess is that people will easily work around it, but in a way that decreases the quality of news reporting.
It’s cute that you still think any of this is unintended.
You’re a bit slow, TP, if you think that every ramification of a government bill is intended. Politicians tend to look only one move ahead on the chess board. They are constantly surprized by the follow-on effects they didn’t or refused to see coming.
C’mon now, that’s a checker board!
The words “quality” and “news reporting” do not belong in the same sentence.
Well some news reporting is qualitier than others.
Scott Chinsota:
They do at The Epoch Times.
Read a long oped this a.m. about school choice stateside.
I was amazed at how balanced it was, providing many facts that somewhat undermine the school choice movement for this hardcore libertarian who didn’t believe there were ANY valid concerns about school choice.
I am not a big fan of Meta and facebook (I have it but never use it) but if this is a Galt moment then I am good with this. However, it is not clear to me what news will not be seen.. is it everything or will they still have CBC Pravda?
I think a VPN will bypass the overlords limitations and allow us to peek into the freedom of others and wonder what the hell became of Canada.
You say it like it’s a bad thing (i.e., not having Facebook and Instagram).
Howzabout Canadians stop giving the media clicks and give up their fear prn addiction? Ignore if them is the best way to fix them.
We need a Radio Free Canada.
So advertisers targeting Canadians won’t be buying Meta space. Not a big hit, but we are following Europe here,
and the techies are starting to squeek:

Watch this back fire on Liberal MSM and Trudy, what’s next if a peasant drops a hot link to a news story will we be billed? Once again Liberals think they can control the press via demanding social media pay for Canadian content. Oh this is going to be amusingggggggggggggg.
Let me be the first to say WHO CARES !! Have no fear I’m sure justine will give them more of our tax dollars soon to ” toe the party line”.
If google follows suit which they’ve hinted at then it’s over for these scumbags.
I do not use either.
V, To add to the register, I do not have or use them either.
I have been musing for a while about a VPN.
I tried a VPN and had loads of problems with Bluetooth devices in the house and car. Some sites require location identification which is problematic with VPN. Pluses and minuses?
Perfect, now Big Chief Spendy McBlackface won’t be influencing Canadians with propaganda.
Well of course he will, but this will hurt the FILTHY LIBERALS.
THANKS robot Zuckerberg you android looking geek.
We’ll all be poorer when legacy media is no more.
The G&M work on chicom interference would be a good example. The big newsrooms have the resources to assign reporters to stories and let them develop the narrative from leads that come in the form of tips and brown manila. The internet upstarts can’t compete. They don’t have the money or the contacts.
That said I do subscribe to the NatPost on line as well as a few of the upstarts that I like (The Real Story, The Line, Paul Wells). Sure the MSM pisses me off as do the upstarts but if you think you can form an opinion reading the Onion or the Bee…
The internet is 95% bullshit. That number wont improve with the loss of legacy media.
abtrapper.
“We’ll all be poorer when legacy media is no more.”
Are we not already there?
The 5 Ws of concise ,coherent ,reporting were buried along with our old friend Common Sense several decades ago.
As for the reporting on Chinese Interference in our political choices..heh,I do not see any “investigative work” being done there..Excuses and blame sharing seems the ruling narrative.
I don’t do social media and I don’t watch the news.. How do you cancel a man who has already canceled himself?.. How do you regulate what I see when I’m not looking at anything?..
I don’t think? Trudeau has thought this through..
As a Canadian “News” reader I bought copies of the Buffalo Newspaper in New York State to get news about the deadliest Canadians in generations.
Just two more small examples. Canada’s media did not report , they actively covered up blackface pictures and Jack Layton naked in a Triad whorehouse on Dundas Street.
They are dangerous scum.
They deserve worse.
