Over time, and across many simulations, the virtual labs inexorably slid towards less effort, poorer methods, and almost entirely unreliable results. And here’s the important thing: Unlike the hypothetical researcher I conjured up earlier, none of these simulated scientists are actively trying to cheat. They used no strategy, and they behaved with integrity. And yet, the community naturally slid towards poorer methods. What the model shows is that a world that rewards scientists for publications above all else–a world not unlike this one–naturally selects for weak science.

Western Feedlots Ltd.’s shareholders have decided to voluntarily wind down cattle ownership and cattle feeding operations. Western will continue to feed and market the existing cattle and after they are marketed, Western will be suspending feedlot operations. Western will not be hiring employees, or purchasing feed grain or feeder cattle after that time. Western will continue farming operations for the foreseeable future. Western’s shareholders chose this course of action due to the current high risk/low return environment in cattle ownership, which is inconsistent with shareholder objectives. In addition to strong headwinds in the cattle industry, the poor political and economic environment in Alberta are also contributing factors to this decision. Western would like to thank all our employees, suppliers and customers for their years of dedication and support and their continued understanding and cooperation.

Why Is There Always A Big Screen TV?
RCMP allege more than $1.2 million in public money was fraudulently obtained by a former co-manager for the Kashechewan First Nation in northwestern Ontario between 2007 and 2012.
Giuseppe (Joe) Crupi, 50, from Thunder Bay, Ont., has been charged with fraud following an investigation.
The money came from a program that was meant to provide breakfasts for about 400 elementary school children on the First Nation.
The RCMP allege Crupi took close to $700,000 of this money for his personal use.
