Build those pipelines, juxtaposing wind

Weekend Watch: How this $25 billion pipeline secures Canada’s independence. This is a fairly decent primer on the pipeline situation Canada is in, facing Trump’s disruptions.

Also from CP on Friday:

Steep drop in global crude prices drag down Canadian energy stocks

Trump said he wanted to drop oil prices. Well, he just dumped about $8 in a couple days off a barrel. We’re now getting into the range where, if it stays there or goes lower, the Canadian oilpatch is going to be hurting, as will provincial budgets in Saskatchewan and especially Alberta, where they based spending on a price around $70 a barrel.

And here, we shall juxtapose

I’m not sure if I posted the first one, but I know I haven’t posted the second. Believe it or not, I am trying to show multiple sides of an issue. And I was at the RM of Weyburn meeting on Friday and will have a scathing column on that this week. Prepare for the flame war:

18 hours of zero of wind power in Saskatchewan on Saturday, 4 hours on Sunday

Brian Zinchuk: Weyburn is hurting, and can’t afford to turn away a third of a billion dollar wind project

(Update: I found out on Friday it’s actually more than $500 million)

Aiding And Abetting?

When a bank agrees to finance your mortgage, it’s a loan, not aid. Investors don’t loan you their capital because they think you are deserving of some “help”. While it’s legitimate to question whether or not governments should finance a pipeline, to call this “aid” is quite the stretch.

“Oil and gas companies – emboldened by their influence over President Trump – are exploiting the current economic uncertainty to call on governments to double down on fossil fuels by expanding pipelines and other projects and finding new export markets,” Julia Levin, associate director of national climate at Environmental Defence, stated in a news release on Thursday.

“This push ignores the fact that fossil fuels come at a high price — not just at the pump, but through rising costs of groceries, worsening health outcomes, damage to property, and huge government handouts,” she added.

“It also ignores the rapid energy transition towards renewable energy that is happening globally.”

Fret, Preen, Freeload

On mathematics as an alleged cause of racial trauma; on the fare-dodging hipsters of San Francisco; and on the imagined importance of politically radical tableware:

Ms Burgher approvingly cites Ms Robin DiAngelo, a fellow peddler of neurosis, the L Ron Hubbard of wokeness, and whose devotees, as we’ve seen, are often wildly unhinged and nakedly malevolent. Which probably tells us much of what we need to know about Ms Burgher and her racial affectations. The mindset she wishes to inflict on others. And by extension, those who succumb.

And so, Ms Burgher makes her unattractive tat, and calls it art, and treads on ceramic eggshells, and calls it performance art, while listing the hallucinatory evils of having pale skin. And while telling those sufficiently credulous that “whiteness is oppression,” the source of all that is wrong, a basis for eternal shame, and that white people should “not behave white.”

You see, we will purge the world of bigotry by embracing wholesale the mental habits of the bigot.

Photoblogging

This past week, I’ve been back in my old stomping grounds of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city definitely is in better shape than when I left in February 2021, but I don’t feel compelled to move back here. Incidentally, it is not clear whether the license plate is mandatory for the Mayor of SF. 🙂

The Great Replacement

The Bureau- “It’s the Community. It’s the Family. It’s the City”: U.S. Experts Warn Canada Is Losing the Fight Against PRC Criminal Networks—Washington Has Run Out of Patience

Canadian cannabis, grown legally or under false licensing schemes, is now a major export commodity for these Chinese crime networks, the expert said. Black-market marijuana is flooding into New York and New Jersey, undercutting legitimate growers in both countries. But more alarmingly, marijuana trafficking is being integrated with fentanyl operations.

“They’re polydrug traffickers, and they’re transnational. The fentanyl cash, the marijuana, the ketamine—it’s all moving through the same networks.”

The Lost Decade

Sun- Liberals sabotaged us in Trump’s tariff war

Canada has one hand tied behind its back in fighting U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs because of a lost decade of economic growth while the Liberals were in power.

Sun- We’ve got bigger problems than Donald Trump

This didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of nearly a decade of government policy that actively worked against growth, against investment, and against the industries that once made Canada prosperous.

The “W” Word

There are a few skills that are hard-wired into the brains of infants that are so fundamental, and so critical for survival, that they’re operative from the moment of birth — if not sooner. One of them is pattern recognition, which is how infants recognize their mother’s faces. Even the youngest child is capable of matching a new stimulus with an event that’s previously established in their memory, and alter their behavior accordingly. Of course animals do the same thing.

But a funny thing happened to pattern recognition, starting around the middle of the last century. Pattern recognition transformed from a fundamental feature of human psychology to something far more sinister. To paraphrase the author Steve Sailer, a “war on noticing” commenced.
