Enoch Powell was a Cambridge professor, a poet, and a classical scholar fluent in Greek, but he will go down in history as the British Conservative MP who in 1968 delivered the historic and highly controversial “Rivers Of Blood” speech in which he warned that British immigration policy was “a great betrayal” that was creating a “transformation to which there is no parallel in a thousand years of English history.”
In “Rivers of Blood”, independent British film producer Denys Blakeway intersperses archival footage with contemporary interviews to create a surprisingly un-PC and commendably balanced — or, as some on the left would call it, “cowardly, manipulative and politically irresponsible” –– look at Powell’s speech and the issues it addressed. Time for Britain to Rethink its Failed NHS?
The Telegraph’s Charles Moore has just published a most interesting column. Here’s a snippet:
Given that health service reform is unpopular, and that politicians like to win elections, you would think that governments would avoid reform. So when they keep coming back to it, it must be for a reason.
That reason is as simple as the question above, but it can never be publicly stated by the reformers. They cannot even admit it in their heart of hearts (assuming they have such an organ), because it is a politically unthinkable thought. It is that the National Health Service is, always has been and always will be a rotten way of doing things.
This is hard to see because the NHS arose from a good idea – that people should be able to get good health treatment without financial worry. Unfortunately for Britain, this was acted upon at a time when centralised state socialism was at its height. So the NHS was constructed to carry out Whitehall commands. It was even imagined that these commands could be so efficiently obeyed that the cost of care would actually fall. The thing was a fantasy of the state planner. It is the reality, not the fantasy, which strikes the patient – and the patient’s friends and relations – every day.

For those who haven’t been following the story (lance touched on it here), last week at a single-witness hearing conducted by Nancy Pelosi a law student at a Jesuit university testified that the costs of birth control for students such as herself are onerous – $3,000 over three-year stint, she averred – and should be included as a part of mandatory health coverage.
Her position is more than debatable on its own terms, particularly in light of information indicating that she decided to attend the Jesuit university “with the express purpose of battling (its insurance) policy”, but hey, why stick to the issue at hand when you can offend women on all sides of the political spectrum à la Rush Limbaugh:
“What does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex.”
Idiot. The Democrats have long enjoyed a hugely significant, double-digit advantage among female voters. Can you think of a better way to drive women who are potential Republican voters in the arms of the Democrats than by calling a young woman who disagrees with the conservative position a slut and a prostitute?
Rick Santorum can:
