This Is Not Your Grandma’s Humane Society

So why all the hostility from the Humane Society of the United States? Why did I hear from North and South Carolinians who had beaten back attempt after attempt from HSUS to have them taxed, registered, regulated, raided, and otherwise priced out of their hobby? What is it about these men, women, and children, so passionate about running up and down a concrete floor with their pets, that demands intervention from activists who think they know better?

  1. You didn’t raise that puppy. Someone else did.

  2. Humane Society of the United States?
Rank Amateurs. Pussies the lot of them.
When it comes to fanaticism, they can’t hold a candle to Ontario’s puppy police.

  3. I have to explain to people that HSUS has nothing to do with their local humane society’s shelter. They do have a heckuva ad campaign, and I wonder who funds that?

  4. foobert – Look, Kate didn’t raise those puppies on her own. Obama helped. Don’t ask why. #Obamaisadogeater

  5. Kate (or anyone else), can you answer a question for me?  My wife and I used to be supporters of the Edmonton SPCA, and when we moved to Calgary back in ’04 we started donating to the SPCA down here, but a few years ago it simply vanished, and now all I can find is the Calgary Humane Society.
Is this just some kind of “re-branding,” or did the HS somehow “muscle out” the SPCA?  Does anyone know?  I’d like to continue giving to an SPCA-like organization in honour of my two (now-deceased) Shih-Tzus, but I’m wary of supporting any org with the words “Humane Society” in its title, after some of the crap surrounding the HSUS and the stuff going down in Toronto came to my attention.
    Any info much appreciated.

  6. The Humane society of America is comprised of professional busybodies and wingnuts that probably started out with good intentions that were lost when it turned into a business that succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Considering that they are advocates only, middle men so to speak, one only has to look at some facts. 11 million members. Assets of over 160 million dollars. 500 + employees. 27 members on their board of directors in that fancy highrise in Wash. D.C. And that’s only in the good ol’ USA.
Your local animal shelter at least does something for the money donated. And the donations don’t come from these fat cats. The Humane society and PETA……., like the Dire Straits song goes: Money for nothing and the twits are free.

  7. Kate,
The HSUS is not the same as the Humane Society or the SPCA. I learned a few years ago from NRA News on satellite radio that it is a anti-gun group. The name is strictly there for deception. Even Rush Limbaugh had a supporting link to them on his web site. I guess their form of deception works.

  8. Kate (or anyone else), HSUS is not connected to the SPCA or the Humane Society. It is an anti-gun, anti-hunting group using that name to solicit donations to fund their group. The don’t shelter animals.

  9. Bunch of feel-good nuts, from one end of the spectrum to the other. Animals are good for killing and eating, or otherwise being of service. End of story.

  10. Low hanging fruit, it’s easy to go after the duly registered and compliant animal/gun enthusiasts.

  11. (tinfoil) hat demands intervention from activists who think they know better?
easy question, easy answer. they sincerely believe, and laugh all the way to the bank, that they do know better. me rabid opponent. grrrrrr.

  12. Wasn’t HSUS the beneficiary of a large blood-price donation from Michael Vick?

Gee Larry, they may not be connected, but is there really any difference?
I mean, if I described the Ontario SPCA as an “anti-gun, anti-hunting group using that name to solicit donations to fund their group” – would you take me to task for it?
