The Sound Of Settled Science

Phys Org;

Using recent advancements in Australian telescope technology, a Monash University-led research team has made an unexpected discovery that a large group of stars are dying prematurely, challenging our accepted view of stellar evolution. […]
While the cause of this remains a mystery, the HERMES chemical analysis has revealed that premature death tends to only occur in the sodium-rich/oxygen-poor stars. The surprising thing is that our best models of these stars do not predict that they will die young.

CBC:

Standard and Poor’s has downgraded Alberta’s credit rating for the second time in five months.
The bond rating agency has dropped Alberta’s rating from AA+ to AA. It last downgraded Alberta in December when it removed the province’s long-lauded triple-A rating.

Doo Diligence

Zerohedge;

Just when you thought that the biggest ever “multi-billion” private company that also happens to be an utter fraud, would quietly disappear before it risked attracting even more unwarranted attention from regulators, enforcers, and criminal investigators which could potentially lead to prison time for “billionaire” Elizabeth Holmes, here she comes again reminding everyone of her fallen from grace presence, in this case with what should be the terminal news for this company, namely that as the WSJ reports (and as the company confirms) Theranos has told federal health regulators that the company voided and revised two years of results from its Edison blood-testing devices and has issued tens of thousands of corrected reports to doctors and patients.
As a reminder, the basis for Theranos ludicrous $9 billion valuation which it appears was achieved without anyone doing any actual due diligence, were the “Edison” machines which were touted as revolutionary – not just by Holmes but by the fawning media and even the Clintons. Theranos has now told regulators that it threw out all Edison test results from 2014 and 2015, effectively confirming it has no proprietary technology, and also validating that its valuation should be zero.
[…]
In other words, Theranos may have put as many as 890,000 lives per year in jeopardy with its fake technology.

Here, Tell These People Something They Don’t Know About Me

Paglia;

The drums had been beating for weeks about a major New York Times expose in the works that would demolish Trump once and for all by revealing his sordid lifetime of misogyny. When it finally appeared as a splashy front-page story this past Sunday (originally titled “Crossing the Line: Trump’s Private Conduct with Women”), I was off in the woods pursuing my Native American research. On Monday, after seeing countless exultant references to this virtuoso takedown, I finally read the article–and laughed out loud throughout. Can there be any finer demonstration of the insularity and mediocrity of today’s Manhattan prestige media? Wow, millionaire workaholic Donald Trump chased young, beautiful, willing women and liked to boast about it. Jail him now! Meanwhile, the New York Times remains mute about Bill Clinton’s long record of crude groping and grosser assaults–not one example of which could be found to taint Trump.
Blame for this fiasco falls squarely upon the New York Times editors who delegated to two far too young journalists, Michael Barbaro and Megan Twohey, the complex task of probing the glitzy, exhibitionistic world of late-twentieth-century beauty pageants, gambling casinos, strip clubs, and luxury resorts. Neither Barbaro, a 2002 graduate of Yale, nor Twohey, a 1998 graduate of Georgetown University, had any frame of reference for sexual analysis aside from the rote political correctness that has saturated elite American campuses for nearly 40 years. Their prim, priggish formulations in this awkwardly disconnected article demonstrate the embarrassing lack of sophistication that passes for theoretical expertise among their over-paid and under-educated professors.

My Russian friend, a widow in her early 50’s of middle-class means, who avoids politics (perhaps most Russians do) said of Putin — “I don’t agree with everything, but I think he is a normal man. He wants what’s good for Russia”.
The key word was “normal”. I’m not sure how this relates to Trump, but I’m reminded of it nonetheless.

In an attempt to enhance the presence of one linguistic group over another, some Canadian Muslims of Pakistani origin encouraged their community to give inaccurate information on the census form.
They asked Pakistani-Canadians to disown their own mother tongue, which is “Punjabi”, and instead list “Urdu”, so as to enhance Islamic numbers in Canada.
In addition, they apparently didn’t want the Sikh community, who also speak Punjabi, to benefit from having more Punjabi speakers in Canada.

This Is Not Your Grandma’s Humane Society

Don’t let a few dead cats stand in the way of progress: NY lawmakers want cat declawing outlawed

The New York State Veterinary Medical Society, however, opposes the bill. […]
“(Declawing) is one method to allow a beloved feline companion to continue to live in a household rather than relinquishing the family pet to a shelter,” the Veterinary Medical Society’s lobbyist wrote. “Declawing should remain a viable alternative to euthanasia if all other options have failed.”
Not all veterinarians agree with that position, however.
Declawing cats can result in complications with both long-term and short-term effects, said Eileen Jefferson, a veterinarian and member of Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.

I will say, it’s amusing to watch as the brave new humane generation of progressive-educated veterinarians plot occupational suicide.

This Is My Doctor Mohammed, And This Is My Lawyer Mohammed

We get letters.

Did you here the Gormley show this morning (podcast) on the article about International Medical Graduates? He interviewed the author of the Univ. of Calgary study and opened the line for call-in.
I called and criticized allowing those who refuse to shake hands with a member of the opposite sex or who are doing a residency in Obstetrics with inadequate training and experience as being dangerous.
John thought it was easily overcome with some training, I countered with if their moral view is that women are morally inferior, lives worth less than that of a man. Then training isn’t going to be enough.
I didn’t use the term Muslim nor Islam, and neither does the article published by the Un. of Calgary.
Though everyone knows what is referred to… that which cannot be named out of fear.
Shortly after, a Muslim doctor named Mohamed from Regina called in. He criticized John for letting me say such things about Islam, and that moreso he’d allowed me to do that before.
Then he criticized the National Post as the only paper that would publish such an article. To top it off, he criticized that the article/study had even been done and published.
By the time he’d finished I was reminded of Tarek Fatah’s warning that the M.B. is run by Engineers, Doctors and Lawyers… Their specialty is suppressing any public criticism of Islam using e.i. legal jihad — the threat of lawsuits.
What regular practicing physician has the time to call in an Open Line show? Could it have cost him $200.00-$300.00 in lost billing? Or not? Perhaps, simply covered by the next patient in the waiting room for the length of the phone call?
I thought you’d find it amusing 🙂

Indeed.

Just posting this is a hate crime: Do you agree that transgender Canadians need human rights protections under the Criminal Code? (Poll) (update – poll’s been retired with “No” winning)
Wait, there’s more!

The NYCHRL [New York City Human Rights Law] requires employers[, landlords, and all businesses and professionals] to use an [employee’s, tenant’s, customer’s, or client’s] preferred name, pronoun and title (e.g., Ms./Mrs.) regardless of the individual’s sex assigned at birth, anatomy, gender, medical history, appearance, or the sex indicated on the individual’s identification.
Most individuals and many transgender people use female or male pronouns and titles. Some transgender and gender non-conforming people prefer to use pronouns other than he/him/his or she/her/hers, such as they/them/theirs or ze/hir. [Footnote: Ze and hir are popular gender-free pronouns preferred by some transgender and/or gender non-conforming individuals.]

Operation Empty Chair

Free Beacon;

The classified details behind Iran’s treatment of several U.S. sailors who were captured by the Islamic Republic during a tense standoff earlier this year are likely to shock the nation, according to one member of the House Armed Services Committee, who disclosed to the Washington Free Beacon that these details are currently being withheld by the Obama administration.
Rep. Randy Forbes (R., Va.) told the Free Beacon in an interview that the Obama administration is still keeping details of the maritime incident under wraps. It could be a year or longer before the American public receives a full accounting of the incident, in which several U.S. sailors were abducted at gunpoint by the Iranian military.
