“(Declawing) is one method to allow a beloved feline companion to continue to live in a household rather than relinquishing the family pet to a shelter,” the Veterinary Medical Society’s lobbyist wrote. “Declawing should remain a viable alternative to euthanasia if all other options have failed.”
Not all veterinarians agree with that position, however.
Declawing cats can result in complications with both long-term and short-term effects, said Eileen Jefferson, a veterinarian and member of Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association.
I will say, it’s amusing to watch as the brave new humane generation of progressive-educated veterinarians plot occupational suicide.

However, my father-in-Laws declawed cat always held its own … even if it meant running under the nearest piece of furniture …

Just to be clear, how many of you know what “de-clawing” is? Imagine if you decided you wanted to de-fingernail yourself, how would you do it? How about if we amputated all your fingers at the first knuckle? That’s the equivalent of de-clawing. Perhaps we shouldn’t just react to everything “progressive” as if it is automatically a bad idea, I mean we do all accept that women should be allowed to vote, right?
“Better dead than declawed” seems to be their motto. Have friends with a declawed cat (front paws only) and he is the happiest, most laid-back moggie around.
I was raised on a Saskatchewan farm. The cats lived in the hay loft of the barn, we lived in the house. After I farmed on my own, I had no cattle and no barn, but I did have a German Shepherd who would control stray cats in our yard. His methods were basic. He killed them by crushing their sensitive little skulls in his jaw. Biting force–300 pounds. I can still hear the sound mixed just before the loud ”Meow” ceased. And the robins slept soundly that night.
Poor ”Jack” was lured into the night by hungry coyotes, and died fighting for his rights. Twas a dog eat cat eat dog world out there. I did however deal out retribution with my Savage Arms .243. Today, I no longer hunt.
