A Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb For Iran

Obama’s not anti-nuke.

The United States and its negotiating partners agreed “in secret” to allow Iran to evade some restrictions in last year’s landmark nuclear agreement in order to meet the deadline for it to start getting relief from economic sanctions, according to a report reviewed by Reuters.
The report is to be published on Thursday by the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security, said the think tank’s president David Albright, a former U.N. weapons inspector and co-author of the report. It is based on information provided by several officials of governments involved in the negotiations, who Albright declined to identify.
Reuters could not independently verify the report’s assertions.
“The exemptions or loopholes are happening in secret, and it appears that they favor Iran,” Albright said.
Among the exemptions were two that allowed Iran to exceed the deal’s limits on how much low-enriched uranium (LEU) it can keep in its nuclear facilities, the report said. LEU can be purified into highly enriched, weapons-grade uranium.

He’s on the other side.

Y2Kyoto: I’ll Miss The Polar Ice Caps

There is no joy in Climateville — Mighty Melting has struck out.

As the sun begins its seasonal descent in the Arctic sky and temperatures drop, the summer melt of sea ice is slowing down. In the next few weeks, the span of the Arctic Ocean covered by ice will reach its annual low.
But despite beginning the summer at unprecedentedly low levels, this year’s minimum won’t break the stunning record of 2012, experts say, thanks to cloudy weather that slowed the rate of melt.

Reader Tips (And Blog Notes)

As you might have surmised, I’ve been on the road for the last two weeks on a trip that took us to the Ottawa area via upstate New York, with only intermittent internet and virtually no access to the news (the original owners of our new dog truck having disconnected the speakers in some manner that defies all logical solutions.)

It’ll take a day or two to get back up to speed. In the meantime, here’s your tips thread for tonight. Have at ‘er.

Bill’s Wife

It’s not illegal if a Clinton does it.
Clinton emailed classified info after leaving State.

The email, which was sent months after she left the State Department, went to people including Deputy Secretary of State William Burns, diplomat Jeffrey Feltman, policy aide Jake Sullivan, diplomat Kurt Campbell, State Department chief of staff Cheryl Mills and top aide Huma Abedin.

Y2Kyoto: You Mean That Big Blazing Ball In The Sky ?

The effect of solar cycles on cloud formation.

The research team led by Jacob Svensmark of DTU identified the strongest 26 “Forbush Decreases” between 1987 and 2007, and looked at ground-based and satellite records of cloud cover to see what happened. In a recent press release, their conclusions were summarized as follows: “[Strong “Forbush Decreases”] cause a reduction in cloud fraction of about 2 percent corresponding to roughly a billion tonnes of liquid water disappearing from the atmosphere.”

A similar study in April was criticized by Watts Up With That? in April.
If true and put simply, solar cycle activity sweeps cosmic rays away from Earth. More cosmic rays leads to cloud formations so lots of cosmic rays hitting Earth = lots of clouds.
We are currently in a weak Solar Cycle 24 with 25 predicted to be weaker.

Foreign Actors compromise voters

Old-school cracks exploited the Arizona and Illinois State Board of Elections.
The story is weak on specifics regarding the Arizona crack, this statement is ambiguous.

While the hackers did not compromise the state network, they stole the username and password of an election official in Gila County, located in central Arizona.

That doesn’t tell us if the stolen username was the origin of the crack attempt or the result. If the origin, then it was either an infected machine the user used or s/he used the same username/password combination on other websites.
From the McLean County Clerk’s Facebook page regarding the Illinois crack:

The pathway into IVRS was NOT through our firewalls but through a vulnerability on our public web page that an applicant may use to check the status of their online voter registration application.
The method used was SQL injection. The offenders were able to inject SQL database queries into the IVRS database in order to access information. This was a highly sophisticated attack most likely from a foreign (international) entity.

As a side note, headlines aside, no story that I’ve found actually says it was the Russians.
