20 Replies to “Relax, Canadian Republicans.”

  1. I respect the Queen in the sense that, as bizarre and anachronistic as our system of government is, it works quite well in practice.
But if Canada was being confederated today, few of us would choose a constitutional (or any other kind of) monarchy. In that sense, Canadians are almost all republican.

  2. As the survey seems to point out, modern Canadians have moved the British Monarchy at par with pop culture celebrity. This trend was accelerated during the Diana years much to the dismay of Lizzy II.
The historical reasons of Canada being part of the commonwealth is, well, boring now…It’s all about the cute pictures…Kate, George…Who got naked with whom…you know, tabloid celebrity crap.
    Dumb down society.
Canada as a whole even without counting Quebec in the equation has not much of an identity left. Blame the education system. It’s by design…History and Patriotism are so yesterday.
If Monarchy are now just Celebrities with fancy titles then Royal worship is alive and well in Canuckistan:
All Hail Prince Justitine, the bear chested Monarch of our great Canadian outdoors!

  3. Canada will be a monarchy forever. The federal government and all 10 provinces must agree to change it. Somebody is going to oppose it just to piss off Quebec. Our history has been entwined with Britain and there’s no reason to change it. Elizabeth II is Queen of Canada who coincidentally is also Queen of 15 other countries plus many more if you include Wales, Jersey etc. as countries. She does not rule Canada in her role of Queen of England any more than she rules England in her position as Queen of Jamaica.

  4. Canada currently has a monarch. Trudeau the Second.
Oh, you mean the English one. My mistake.

  5. The Latin countries do not, cannot, deny their Roman ancestry. Nor can or should the Anglo countries.

  6. Of course she’ll never rule Canada as Queen of England, because she is, quite properly, Her *Canadian* Majesty.

  7. I like this verse very uch, although I have seen many versions and perversions fo the anthem on the web.
    2. O Lord our God arise,
    Scatter her enemies
    And make them fall;
    Confound their politics,
    Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
    God save us all! .

  8. Yeah Canadians are true monarchists why a few years ago there were celebrations in the street! Hugging and Kissing and public drunkenness and all kinds of joyous outpourings when our Esteemed Prime Minister, Prime Minister Harper put the Royal back in Royal Canadian Air Force! er what you say?

  9. Nothing makes our constitutional monarchy look quite so good right now as the “gruesome twosome” slugging it out for head of state in that interminable presidential election to our south.

  10. I’m not a Royalist, but had great respect for the Queen Mother, and the current Queen Elizabeth 2nd. Who I have trouble accepting is Charles Le Scheisskopf,of global warming and one world government fame.
The kids seem to be okay, but Charley is pure Upper Class Twit. May his Mom outlive him so we never have to see him touring Canader as King of It All.

  11. Derek when I went to school Oh Canada was sung first thing in the morning right after we recited the Lord’s Prayer and God Save the Queen was sung at the end of the day before we left the classroom.

  12. I grew up in the Toronto area in the 1950’s and it was approximately the same as you state.
God Save the Queen and the Lords Prayer before classes started, The Maple Leaf Forever after lunch, and Oh Canada at the end of the day.
We also brought our cap guns and holsters to play at recess and lunchtime.
We threw snowballs at each other, played contact games, ran through the girls skip ropes and got them to whine.
We got into fights in the back corner of the schoolyard and oh yeah, I and most boys carried a small pocket knife on us. We got the strap or the yardstick when we had it coming, had a few kids over the years who had survived polio and wore braces with out a fuss being made.
We lost a few kids to leukemia without the grief counsellors invading our classroom on mass.
I was always employed on some level at sometimes questionable pay from about 10 years of age on.
In short we had a pretty well rounded upbringing.

  13. I agree. God save the Queen. Although, I do not want the idiot Chawls as King.
As far as Mark Steyns quote, that is what the Bolos (Marxists)/socialists want. That way they can create the new soviet man.
Anonymous critter, exactly. Except out here in Saskabush, when I started school in the late 40s, some of the older boys brought their 22 rifles to school to shoot gophers on the school yard and on the way to and from school. Occasionally we also sang Rule Britannia. Now they want the kids to sing the Internationale.

  14. God save the Queen! Her Majesty annoyed Pierre the Trudeau, as he could not be supreme under her rule Let Her Majesty similarly annoy and frustrate Justin.
The anti-Monarchists here are too thick to understand the rationale for an efficient and a dignified part of the Constitution, and wouldn’t know Bagehot if they stumbled over him.
    God save the Queen!

  15. Charles demonstrates the value of our constitutional monarchy as much as Her Majesty does. As Head of State he’ll have no power, but whoever we elect to wield the governing power will have to remain standing in His presence unless invited to sit, have to address Him in respectful terms and then only if spoken to, and will thereby always be reminded that just because you fooled the electorate once doesn’t mean you are top of the heap. Even if His Majesty is a fool.
Mind you, no system is perfect. I doubt if Justin Trudeau can be convinced that he’s not something above royalty.

  16. I can’t take it anymore. The ignorance of Canadians about the nation they live in is astounding.
    1. The foreigner Queen selects from a list that Canadians have presented her, and personally approves the PM, the Premiers, and all other political executives in Canada including Senators, Judges, Administrators and ALL OTHER EXECUTIVE POSITIONS.
    2. Twice in Canada’s short history the Crown has ignored their Canadian subjects (yes subjects as there is legally no such thing as a Canadian citizen) choices in the elections and vetoed, then install a PM more to the Ruling Class’s taste.
    3. The Crown owns ALL PROPERTY IN CANADA. Canadians have transferable privileges of real estate but never, ever, are they granted allodial title to those lands. All property not only includes your home and land, but your boat, car, possessions etc… This is why Eminent Domain is not needed in Canada to seize property.
    4. The Crown and all of her private possessions, (the Canadian Government, military, police, Judiciary, etc.) are exempt from any Constitutional oversight. This is called Royal Prerogative.
    5. While Americans Sovereign Citizens select their candidates for office with wide-open primary elections, Canada’s candidates are selected by a closed and very private group of Loyalists in each party. These political parties are of course private, and if you want to join you must pay and fill out an application which may be rejected for any reason. So much for the True North, strong and free.
