Pleasing your enemies does not turn them into friends;

Since the opening of the Boundary Dam Unit 3 Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage Project in late 2014, Saskatchewan’s coal-fired power industry, and Estevan in particular, has been waiting for a clear message from the provincial government whether it would pursue additional carbon capture projects. To date, nothing has come forward, but the minister responsible indicated on Sept. 20 it would not happen.

Hanging in the balance is the future of both Coronach and Estevan, with the Poplar River Power Station at Coronach, Boundary Dam and Shand Power Stations at Estevan, their respective coal mines, workforces and communities.

On Sept. 20, the clearest indication to date came from the Minister of Crown Investment Corp. Don Morgan. The most recent cabinet shuffle placed all the major Crown corporations, including SaskPower, under one ministry under Morgan. His statements during an announcement on two possible sites for small modular reactor locations did not bode well for the future of coal in this province.

So in an exceptionally short time Sam has demonstrated his quest to figure out what’s true and to be consistent with what he said to be true “five minutes ago,” by the following sequence of claims

1. There was absolutely a left-wing conspiracy to withhold information from the American public to deny the presidency to Donald Trump

2. It’s not a left-wing conspiracy because Liz Cheney supported it

3. Conspiracies out in the open aren’t conspiracies

4. It doesn’t matter how much or how little is out in the open because is it really a conspiracy just because people are conspiring?

Sam’s resorting to the asteroid analogy was of necessity. If Sam had spent more time trying “figure out what’s true and what’s consistent to what I claimed was true five minutes ago or five years ago,” he may have been able to spot where he went wrong.

He wants people to take him seriously, but not literally.

A win for the good guys.

Today’s unanimous ruling by Alberta’s Court of Appeal is a total legal, moral and constitutional victory for Pastor Artur Pawlowski and his brother David.

In short, Alberta’s top judges ruled that:

~ the court order that was used to arrest and jail Pastor Artur was flawed and therefore illegal;

~ all of the punishments that flowed from that — such as being fined and jailed — were without basis. Pastor Artur’s fines will be returned to him

~ the additional bizarre, authoritarian penalties — banning him from going on speaking tours; requiring him to read a statement denouncing himself any time he criticized the government — were revoked, and deemed unconstitutional.

I talked to a friend of mine who was telling me, “When I set my Tinder radius to 1 mile, just around the university, and I see the bios of the women, a lot of their profiles say things like ‘poly’ or ‘keeping it casual’ – basically, they’re not interested in anything too serious.” He says something like half of them have something like that in their bio. And then he said, “But when I expand the radius on my Tinder to five miles, to include the rest of the city and the more run-down areas beyond the university bubble, half the women are single moms.” And basically, the luxury beliefs of the former group, the educated group, trickled down and ended up having this outsize effect on the people who are less fortunate, who don’t have the [social and] economic capital of the people who can afford that belief.
