Cotler has promised to protect churches. Yeah, right. Cotler’s word and a loonie will buy you a Coke from the vending machine.

Where Are The Mass Marches?
Robert Mugabe continues his insane demolition of houses and businesses as he increasingly starts to look like Pol Pot reborn, seeking to depopulate the cites and drive the now homeless and unemployed population into the countryside to eke out an even more miserable living, thereby dispersing and isolating people from communities which might oppose his tyrannical rule.
And where are the marchers in the west? Where are the protesters calling for justice in Zimbabwe?
There are no protest marches against Mugabe, because protest organizers are on Mugabe’s side.

Another Bad Day For Galloway
I told you that British MP (and Saddam Hussein apologist) George Galloway was was in for a world of hurt. A more deserving chap I can’t think of, either.
The Iraqi dictator gave him vouchers so he could buy and profit from the oil, says the Senate probe. It also claims the former Labour MP, who has consistently denied the allegations, appeared to use a childrens’ leukaemia charity to conceal payments from oil transactions. The report says an Iraqi Ministry document indicates Galloway was allocated vouchers for millions of barrels. These could be sold on to oil firms for three to 30 cents commission each. That could have earned him between 300,000 and 3million.
Galloway’s name first popped up on what has become known as the al-Mada list – which was released last year by the Iraqi independent daily Al-Mada to wide skepticism.
update – “Daniel” is going to appear Norm Coleman’s “lions den”. Slurp.

Oh, And The Ice Floes, They Be Stained With Ink
Canadian seal hunt resumes
By Barbara Stewart, Globe Correspondent | April 13, 2005
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Over the vigorous protests of international animal-welfare organizations, the largest seal hunt in a half-century resumed yesterday off Newfoundland and Labrador.
Hunters on about 300 boats converged on ice floes, shooting harp seal cubs by the hundreds, as the ice and water turned red. Most of the seals were less than 6 weeks old.

Boston Globe, April 15 Editor’s Note:
An article by a freelance writer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in Wednesday’s Globe said that the season’s hunt for baby seals off Newfoundland had begun the previous day. In fact, the hunt did not begin that day; it was delayed by bad weather, and is scheduled to begin today, weather permitting. The article included details of the day’s hunt as if it had taken place and without attribution or other sourcing, as if the writer had witnessed the scene personally. Details included the number of hunters, a description of the scene, and the approximate age of the cubs. The author’s failure to accurately report the status of the hunt and her fabrication of details at the scene are clear violations of the Globe’s journalistic standards. Because the freelancer was not reporting from the scene, Globe editors should have demanded attribution for any details she provided about the hunt itself. The story should not have been published in the Globe, and the Globe has discontinued use of the freelancer.

Arrests In Arnamous Slayings
Arrests have been made in the vicious slaying of a New Jersey family. Fears that the killings were religiously motivated have been allayed (providing the accused are convicted) – New York Post reports that they were victims of a brutal robbery by a man who rented an upstairs apartment, and an accomplice.

A New Record
I purchased a 350 g bag of Dad’s Goodie Rings (chewy, chocolatey cookies made with oatmeal, peanut butter and coconut) at Wal-Mart just under 23 hours ago. All that remains is a sad, crumpled yellow carcass and the empty husk of a cookie tray.

Soldiers Christmas
This is a poem that was forwarded by a friend who serves in the Canadian Forces, in Afghanistan. Written by a Canadian Peacekeeper, It’s fairly long so the rest appears in the extended entry.
Merry Christmas to everyone, and especially to those who are far from home, serving in Haiti, Kosovo, Afghanistan, the Middle East and elsewhere.
TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.
I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.
I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.
“Every Country Needs A Good Lefty”
Tidbits are starting to trickle in about the details of the Bush visit. Most gratifying (to a redneck conservative like me) was the story that he walked past former prime minister Jean Chretien to greet someone else at that table. This though, is even better. Toronto Star (reg.required)
For six minutes last night, while the top layer of Canada’s political class schmoozed with cocktails and canaps, New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton told President George W. Bush why a lot of Canadians don’t like the idea of a missile-defence shield over North America.
Bush was not moved. If there were no such thing as North Korea or Iran, Bush reportedly said, then there would be no need for missile defence. He seemed to like Layton’s spunk, however.
As Bush started to slide away, to shake more hands among the three dozen or so high-ranking guests invited to the private reception at last night’s gala dinner, he smiled and told Layton: “Every country needs a good lefty. … We even have some in our country.”
Layton spoke to the Star last night after what he described as a direct, amiable but ultimately “disturbing” conversation with Bush, which was followed up by longer chats at the private reception with the outgoing and incoming U.S. secretaries of state, Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice.
In all, Layton had about half an hour with top U.S. politicians. He was gratified he got a chance to help explain to Americans what the protests in Ottawa were about yesterday, but he also knows he didn’t make a dent in their determination to go ahead with the plan. “He’s a very determined man.”

If Ye Break Faith

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
