  1. I have a now outdated visual showing the number of abortions compared to lives lost in accidents and wars. It is shocking. The graph was available through Real Women of Canada.

  2. Human life is cheap according to the governing authorities.
I just wouldn’t want to be the beneficiary of being on their hit list.
Of course Canada has the distinction of having no restrictions on this behaviour whatsoever, notwithstanding the Morgentaler decision which suggested the state does have an interest in regulating the practice.

  3. Millions of innocent children slaughtered!! Investigate how it is performed–you will be sickened.

  4. Ten states are missing: Alaska, California, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Wyoming. All these states have abortions per 1000 births of less than 69.
    California is a surprise.
New York has 500 while neighbouring state New Jersey has less than 69. This probably due to ease of access to abortion in NY. This shows how statistics can be skewed because of various state’s legislation.
The figure regarding D.C is especially sickening. What explains this? A crumbling black society? Or is it reflective of the morality of the political class and their careerist minions in Washington?

  5. A crumbling black society?
As DC is an overwhelmingly black city, my guess is that abortions excelerated among blacks when welfare ended. Under the dismantled welfare system you were basically paid to have kids.
A 15 year old welfare mom doesn’t get public housing anymore. And, dragging the useless loser boyfriend into court for child support is hopeless.
Obviously the lefty’s sex education in schools on responsible pregnancy prevention isn’t working. Why would it when morality isn’t in the equation. Typical money wasted on the public education rat hole.

  6. California is a surprise.
I would think that it’s a result of the (heavily Catholic) Hispanic population; were you to remove them from the sample, you might see less surprising results.

  7. I think a lot of people who expressed disappointment at the Morgentaler Order of Canada don’t believe abortion should be illegal. Similarly a lot of people alarmed at the data CC is presenting in this post don’t necessarily believe abortion should be illegal. Which raises an interesting question: do you have to believe that abortion should be illegal to be considered anti-abortion these days?
I’ve never at any point in my life thought abortion should be illegal, and yet the social cost of abortion needs to be examined.
Perhaps it is the “abortion lifestyle” that is the problem: from 1200 to 1800 the number of children born in England outside of wedlock totaled 4%. Result: the biggest f*cking empire this world has ever seen. Those who don’t learn from history…

  8. I was originally pro-legalisation for the arguments that, here in Canada, Morganteiler made:
“Abortion happens, has always happened and will continue to do so. Being illegal, women seek desperate means in dark shadows and the ill consequences can be avoided by legalisation”.
However, I see it has simply become a careless, slacker, method of birth control.
Believe you me, abortion should not be undertaken lightly. I know, I am adopted. Had abortion been lightly taken, I wouldn’t exist. Therefore, I am an abortion survivor.
The above argument is a non sequitor … and wins the day.

  9. I expect I will regret wading into this debate, and there’s probably a reason why Kate does not normally put abortion as an issue to be discussed here…. (not in my recent memory anyway)… but here goes.
Would anyone here seriously argue that if those abortions that were carried out in desperately poor, crime ridden, social disaster areas like Washington DC had been blocked, people and the state would have been better off? How would those unaborted fetuses have ended up?
I assume most are familiar with “freakonomics” , a stupid name, but fairly widely known and seriously considered theory that, among other things, explains the fall in violent crime in the US in the past decade as the echo of the increase in abortions in the US post Roe v Wade.
Obviously I’m a pro-choicer, but I would readily admit that we should be trying to prevent these unwanted pregnancies, not performing abortions after the fact.
But it is clear we aren’t having much success with prevention…. ignorant ill-educate inner city mothers are continuing to make babies with multiple fathers despite all the do-gooders trolling the inner cities. “just say no” is a pretty laughable strategy.
    Suggestions?
    Forced sterilization?
    Orphanages?
More social workers? More dollars? More jails?
Closing off the inner cities with barbed wire fences and letting those who live there settle things “Escape from New York” style?
Forcing middle class families to adopt the poor kids born into those terrible social circumstances to “save them”?
Does any of that sound acceptable?

  10. This is news?It has been common knowledge to those paying attention that Canada performs over 100,000/year.
With the pill and condoms being pushed by the pro-get-the-kids-doin’-it crowd, why such high numbers?
Is this the wake-up call we have been waiting for?
Abortion as birth control is disgusting.

  11. Lori..you assume demographics. How do you know that high DC rate is not the swingers on the hill?

  12. LOL. Because they are mostly too senile to procreate.
This being said…. all it takes is a young intern and a dirty old man. And there’s plenty of both in Washedinscum DC. So maybe you have something there.

  13. Lori, I couldn’t agree more that feckless husbandless slobs procreating with no means and no brains have been pulling down society. There is been a huge social cost for that behavior. I’ve worked both in a city juvenile detention center and a maximum security prison and trust me most of the males there never met dad. Grandma is their emergency contact. Across the spectrum from that pathology is the well healed abortion seeker that doesn’t want the inconvenience of morning sickness on a cruise that she booked. I personally heard that one from another nurse who was employed once where I never would be. How loathsome is that.
Abortion is a very ugly social entity. Thanks to the permissive and always subjectively moral lefties and their feminist contingent shame is now forbidden when there is nothing wrong with it as a positive social force.
We will never turn back the clock on abortion which doesn’t mean that the moral person has to reconcile with it.

  14. A commenter at Captain Capitalism: “[The high rates of ab**tion] makes me wonder why people oppose teaching JR high children about s*x. They’re doing it anyway so maybe we should let them know something about the consequences?”
    EXCUSE ME?
There IS sex education in nearly every school and kids know more about s*x, about how to have s*x, about how to use contraception than they’ve ever known, thanks to Planned Parenthood and million$ of government dollars that fund PP in the States and Canada.
Knowing about s*x, about how to have s*x, and how to use contraception has not stopped kids from having s*x or from getting pregnant or contracting STDs.
Why? Because most teenagers are not mature enough to engage in a s*xual/emotional relationship or to apply what they know about s*x and having s*x and contraception.
That’s what too many people forget. Just “educating” kids about s*x and contraception doesn’t cut it. There’s a powerful emotional and spiritual element to a s*xual relationship and, let’s face it, most teens–heck, lots of adults as well–aren’t ready to face up to the reality of the possible consequences of a s*xual relationship: pregnancy, responsibility, and accountabilty.
Sadly, ab**tion is the all-too-frequent result of the inability to face up to the logical consequences of being s**ually active–not just on the part of the teenager but on the part of society as a whole.

  15. Lori >
I’ll agree with you comments 100%. Also hate to jump into an insanely sensitive topic, but where do all of those unwanted babies go?
Of course “abortion as birth control is disgusting” as put forth by poster blutech. But the world is full of disgusting people who do disgusting things. Legislating these disgusting people to birth their unwanted mistakes and drop them on society will only exacerbate the already overpopulated mess of drug dependent criminals and criminally ill.
The similar argument goes for funding “cheap” aids drugs to Africa. The lefty’s scream about overpopulation, global warming and bringing the third world up to industrialized country standards. Then in the next breath they scream louder about the crops necessary to feed the third world being used for cleaner alternative fuels.
In the meantime we are then supposed to fund millions of Africans that can’t feed themselves with drugs that will prolong their miserable existence long enough to produce several more aids infected mouths to feed.
There indeed needs to be a rational oversight of this global demographic mess the crazy liberal left has condemned our planet to. Their delusional alternative to save the babies of the world now is to swamp western society with millions of illiterate baby making machines believing somehow that we have the capacity to balance the human viral infection of this planet.
Abortion is disgusting, but at the end of the day it’s either them or us. At the very least global or civil war between the haves and the have-not’s is averted a little longer with each disgusting act of natural selection. Lets the mothers kill their own and let the Africans feed themselves or starve to death.

  16. Abortion is just another mechanism to make us all artificially equal. Hey ladies, wanna be a soldier even though you are weaker, smaller, slower and more prone to injury then every single male soldier? No worries. There’s a separate set of state sanctioned physical requirements for you. And wanna pretend that your uterus is a penis? No problemo. We’ve got state sanctioned abortuaries all across this great nation so you can carry on this ridiculous charade of sexual equality.

  17. Abortion is MURDER.
If some woman I knocked up killed my baby a hanging would be way to good for her.
What do you think got started at conception, a Chevy motor?

  18. All who are against abortion knew this would happen. How much ink was used to tell us that killing babies would be restricted to the first trimester & not become a form of birth control. Now they kill the child while being born. Suck its brain out. Some like Andrea Dorkin want Women to be able to terminate up to 5 years old. More lies by the left to get there foot in the door to reek havoc conjoined in murder, like all good death cults. Its makes you wonder how many more lies you have been told basted in 40 years of socialist futility. All run by cultural Marxists in charge of a corrupt media, education administrations, timid religious leaders, false science & finally the HRC State censor. At least it does me.
We are no better in this respect than those who chucked there first born into the fires of Moloch. For economic, health or social status, or other reasons, but it all comes down to human sacrifice. People today just leave out the social plus religious garnishing the barbarians used in there ritual human killing.
They thought themselves civilized as well. This is a great evil of any age. To kill the innocent for the betterment of the jaded or the gullible, just for gain of any sort.

  19. Yes, Revnant Dream: Pro-life people were prophetic and predicted the outcomes the Captain has posted. ‘No surprise to us. ‘Always deeply frustrating to see how many lives ruined, compromised, and irrevocably changed by abortion, all in the pernicious names of “equality” and “choice.”
There’s no equality for the child in the womb, nor choice.
And sex ed’s not the answer…kids have never known so much…

  20. Revnant Dream >
I agree with you, but differ with the opinion that it’s not our responsibility to clean up “their” mess and pay for the brainless mistakes of societies losers. They chose to kill, not you, and if they were forced by the nanny state to find another means of killing or abandoning those children they will. Regardless any of the babies that may survive become someone else’s burden, which is fine if all the people so against abortion took on the struggle themselves, but they don’t. Instead they feel that everyone needs to share in their personal belief system and therefore the burden is distributed amongst everyone.
Those burdens are a lot bigger than taxpayers financing orphanages and all the normal needs of the child. It includes the extra medical treatments for drug-addicted babies, and the special needs throughout their lives. Also is the heightened cost of criminal activity for many (not all) due to the natural “gettoization” of these unwanted spawn. Many of whom will be predisposed to carry on the “family” tradition of welfare and more abandoned babies.
Probably the better force against this phenomenon of mothers eating their young in our society would be an active and realistic war on drugs to start. Otherwise you are simply dealing with culture and lifestyle that you will never change or legislate.

  21. Knight 99;
As you may well know in ancient times they used to expose unwanted children on hills & such out side the city gates. Slavers would comb the hills for them. With slave wet nurses being used for a future investment.
This of course only when the poisons did not kill both the Mother or child that the elite sometimes employed. If well off they used a Greek Dr. If you compare their equipment for surgery with ours, including ones exclusively for Women, they haven’t changed much in 2,500 years.
Christians used to search the hills every night & brought them up as their own offspring. The Roman Church was famous for this in the latter first too third century. I know a man at work who has raised 23 kids of all stripes& mental acuity. He’s a preacher part time. There are thousands who wait for a child. Its why so many adopt foreign children. In a Pluralistic society like Rome was as well. I as a Christian cannot force people to do anything, just point out how life is sacred. I can give money or if married help raise children right. This is the direction we should have gone. That the modern Church should have gone down. Instead we got nothing but quiet except Catholics with Evangicals crying a warning. There will be a price for all this innocent blood shed with no word from the Visible Church. You can see it in the United Church in Canada as they become heretical as well the Anglicans of which I was one. I believe as Christians we can only persuade people by being the salt of the Earth with actions. Not that Christians are any better people. In Edmonton you have a Birth right center across from an abortion mill. The Individual has the choice. I don’t think we will run out of orphans any time soon.
Since we have given Women the right to kill, Drs, as well, now want to make judgments on weather you should die or not. Another decides if you should live based on the fads of the day. This as we said at the time would cheapen life. Look at the results. Now the CHRC’s are banning Dr. from even having moral or ethical choices in their practice. How do you think that will degrade life? In the end this is there game. To be allowed to kill any one deemed not of any worth. Of course you can exclude serial killers , rapists & other criminals. Never meet a socialist yet who didn’t love these monsters. Ask yourself this question. When did all these birth clinics arise as abortions did & why?
I agree its up to the anti-abortion community to educate with care for those babies. As well the Mothers which they do. It is also the Churches that truly follow Jesus that will take in some. As well as good meaning citizens of any belief or not. You don’t have to believe in God to be against the taking of human life on the cheap. Those who are pro-abortion should not have to pay taxes on this. I think we now have enough organizations to serve in this capacity that get no government funds like Women who do get abortions on my taxes. I do think though killing a baby while being born is a new low in human depravity.

  22. Lori @4.58pm wonders whether, ‘if those abortions … had been blocked, people and the state would have been better off?” She mentions the thesis invoked in “freakonomics”, and “readily admit[s] that we should be trying to prevent these unwanted pregnancies, not performing abortions after the fact.” She also notes that “it is clear we aren’t having much success with prevention…. ignorant ill-educate inner city mothers are continuing to make babies with multiple fathers despite all the do-gooders trolling the inner cities.”
Lori – you have fallen prey to statistics. It is unconscionable to view a person as fettered by circumstance and genetics, slave to class and origins. It is better to strive for the good, however hard to obtain, than to institutionalize bondage, inferiority and dependence. The illustration of William Wilberforce is apropos.

    Well said!
No, I didn’t know the historical fact that abandoned ancient children were left outside the walls for slavers. Makes sense though, and interesting.
Kudos’ for your sense of responsibility and where those responsibilities lay. You sound like a gracious and generous person.
Also do not misunderstand my comments; I am not personally “pro-abortion” I do feel it’s vile and disgusting, would never partake nor advocate it. I suppose for me, it’s just another angle of view with far less empathy for the mindless in an already decaying society. So I give it about as much thought as the Hutu of Kenya killing the Tutsi. Sure it’s sad but not my problem. My feelings on the other hand about the abandoned children, many sick from birth and disadvantaged all their lives goes deeper. The reality is that it does become our problem as these children mature or age and society as a whole does not benefit generally. Sure one of those children may grow up to be the next Einstein or Gandhi, but the reality of their lives makes it more likely you will end up with a Capon or Stalin.
The issues of course do not begin with these children, but with the “parents”, then prevalent culture. Example: I was surprised India ranked so low on the abortion chart, when it is well know many Indian sects source out aborting females (possibly cost?). As a believer in natural selection, I would place bets that in any other less pampered society the issue would be far less prevalent, as it was in ancient times. Family, Slave or death.

  24. Why is abortion is so common?
Because it’s back-up contraception. Over half the women who seek abortions *were* using contraception.
People think they can have sex without consequences. They think using contraception is “responsible”. Well what happens if that condom fails?
Society has promoted contraception as a means to have casual sex re: no responsibilities. When that “promise” falls through, women feel stuck and seek an abortion.
We should simply stop lying about the nature of sex. Have sex and you will, eventually, get pregnant in the long term EVEN WITH contraception. Most women can expect at least one unexpected pregnancy in her reproductive lifetime. The question is: under what circumstances do you want that unexpected pregnancy? When you’re 15 years old, or when you’re married to a man with a stable job?
The Catholic Church knew that once contraception became common, abortion would follow, and promiscuity would become widespread.

  25. i wonder how long a country can surive, let alone maintain it’s character when they are killing the future generation at such a rate.

  26. Hmmm, interesting how selective some of the posters are in reading these numbers. Canada, with no restrictions on abortions and (in most cases) public funding for them, has a rate half that of the United States.
Clearly, access to abortion (as well as social stigma against it) isn’t the only factor here.
Similarly, sex education in Russia is virtually non-existent(http://www.moscowtimes.ru/article/919/49/231281.htm), yet Russia’s abortion rate dwarfs the rest of the world.
So, neither is sex education the primary problem.
Finally, I think most of us would view countries such as France, Germany, and Finland as more “liberal” than the USA, but their rates are much lower than America’s, so there goes that argument.
Oh, about that whole “promiscuity has gone wild” thing…

  27. Our society is reaping the reward from putting too much value on the act and too little value on the product. Freakonomics be damned, our society is in a death spiralling decline.
If an energy company permanently abandoned newly drilled wells because unwanted production would cause undue hardship on the staff, how long would the company stay in business? So goes the fortunes of the nations that partake in the murderous practice of ending productive lives before they begin.

  28. Jim, are suggesting that Russians or any kid in the West past puberty doesn’t know how or what causes pregnancies, only a formalized presentation would give them that knowledge? Give us a break.

  29. There are no unwanted babies. There are thousands of infertile couples who desperately want kids. There are also hundreds of thousands of Christians who would adopt these kids. My friend adopted a Down’s Syndrome kid and 5 other families were wanting to adopt her.
Pro-Choicers are liars … there are no unwanted kids.

  30. Penny – I’m not suggesting that at all.
A poster earlier in this thread blamed formal sex education (in the schools) for high abortion rates. I was pointing out that the highest abortion rates in the world occur in a country that has virtually no formal sex education programs, so that clearly isn’t “the cause”.
