  10. BTW, just an observation: Jill Biden, Joe’s wife, seems lest than enthralled by all the goings-on. She looks like a lady of taste, so I can only imagine what all the tasteless hoopla is doing for her digestion, discernable in her pained facial expression.
    I can just see the thought bubble coming out of her head: “Four years of THIS? Please, God, help us lose. Four MONTHS is about all I can stand.”

    The campaign is all glitz, all Hollywood. From my perspective, were I an American voter, I’d be quite off-put by the whole spectacle.

  12. The McCain people keep saying that Obummer is nothing but a rock star celebrity and they are absolutely correct. O needs to resonate with white middle class America and he is simply not doing that. This kind of “celebrity” show is going to turn off more and more voters as time goes on. It is quite remarkable that during this Democratic convention, the “bounce” that always goes to the party’s nominee is actually going to the other party. It is looking more and more like Obummer is on a slippery slope that will see McCain taking the oath of office.

    I guess the Dems have never dabbled in our Founding Fathers attitudes or de Tocqueville’s definitive observation about Americans. We don’t like royal pageantry, royal courts, colonial empires, emperial edicts or pompous personalities. Cowboy hats and baseball caps are a comforting sight to most of us. We like to see our Presidents in them on occasion. The stupidity of this bizarre tableau is beyond belief. This isn’t going to play well at Biff’s Barbeque which means it’s going down hard.
    I’m grateful to my Canadian conservative counterparts who will be watching this tonight so I don’t have to. There is only so much of the Obama epic that one can take without throwing up.

Still think folks around here are completely misguided when they associate Obama in any way with socialism (Obama’s a preeminent shill for capitalism and a Bay St. establishment candidate) but having witnessed the last couple of days of the DNC and seeing what’s in store for tonight, I have three words for the McCaintards (cue shot of Vince Carter circa 2000 in the NBA slam dunk contest or Dwight Howard’s superman dunk last year) “IT..     As a democratic socialist I don’t care for either candidate, but I guess a capitalism of “hope” is more tolerable than a capitalism of fear & hate.     Spoken like a well trained moonbat. Well done, Bill. It amazes me how people like Bill here completely ignore the advances in almost every facet of human existence that have developed under capitalism (longer life spans, medical advances, broad-based economic prosperity, etc.).
    Yet, Bill and the moonbats over on the left equate capitalism with “exploitation.” This is a remnant from the caveman brain when, in fact, the “economy” of the tribe was a zero sum game. There was only so much meat on a carcass to go around, so if someone ate more meat, there was less to go around to the other tribe mates. Message to Bill: we’re no longer a caveman, tribal society. We are now an advanced civilization based on capitalism and modern economics. The economy is not stagnant, and is not a zero-sum game, and a person getting ahead doesn’t mean somebody else, somewhere, lost ground as a result.
    So, Bill, grow up, and exercise more self reliance in your life. Government is not your friend, and is not an inherently benevolent force. A government big enough to give you everything, is big enough to take it all away, including your self-reliance (paraphrased from Mark Steyn, page 48, America Alone).

  39. Just had the pleasure to be invited to an all expense paid , by relatives, party in Ontario. That aside, the countryside 100 miles north of the cesspool known as Toronto is quite beautiful, and know what, the environment is beautiful just like Alberta. Some big money men at this party, Carreras and Bentleys in the yard, and the unaminous opinion of all these Toronto and New York money men was this. Some quick replies. Britney’s a Republican. Obama is not a Marxist. I do not support Obama. My relationship to and critique of capitalism is far more complicated than “that nefarious, soul destroying system of economic exploitation known as capitalism. That was supposed to be a sarcastic stereotypical reduction of capitalism. I thought using “soul destroying” was a dead give away.
    What’s with the lecture on self-reliance? Why would I listen to a buffoon like Steyn? Perhaps Emerson and transcendentalism might be a better route to self-reliance. Again why impute that notion of the State to me?
    Regardless, my only two serious points were Obama has nothing to do with socialism, or the Left for that matter. Second, like it or not his victory has been sealed. He will be the next president of the USA. And this does not bode well for Harper.

    I re-read your original post, Bill. I detected no sarcasm in there at all. So, yes, you may with to use appropriate blog protocol (emoticon, etc.) if that’s what you’re trying to convey, in future. People on this blog don’t suffer fools gladly, and far left moonbats will receive appropriate, and legitimate, responses.
    Regarding the “lecture” on self-reliance, coming from Steyn or not, I’d like to think it’s not a half-bad philosophy by which to lead one’s life. I just happened to like that particular quote from his book. You don’t have to like Steyn to follow a philosophy of self-reliance.
    But, if you were indeed being sarcastic, then you can disregard the lecture, no?

    Given that McCain and Obama are tied in the polls (and, I’d point out, there was no “bump” from the veep announcement), and given that Obama has lost an approximate 5-point lead since he sealed the primary, this statement is little more than talking out of your arse, Bill.
    I won’t venture to say who will win, since it’s a foolhardy task to undertake at this stage of the game.

    I still maintain my analogy to the NBA slam dunk contest holds. Yes, participants went in on equal footing (tied in the polls), but what the dems have pulled off this week is akin to Dwight Howard’s superman dunk. There is no way of responding. “It is over”.
    Again, I have no vested interested in seeing Obama win (see first line of this post). However, I am glad to see that Rove inspired negative attacks may not prevail this time. And I hope Canada will follow suit by similarly retreating from negative campaigning. It is so much for interesting to stand in hope of something than to stand in hate against something.
