Make them pay.

A North Dakota judge has said he will order Greenpeace to pay damages expected to total $345 million in connection with protests against the Dakota Access oil pipeline from nearly a decade ago, a figure the environmental group contends it cannot pay.

In court papers filed Tuesday, Judge James Gion said he would sign an order requiring several Greenpeace entities to pay the judgment to pipeline company Energy Transfer. He set that amount at $345 million last year in a decision that reduced a jury’s damages by about half, but his latest filing didn’t specify a final amount.

The long-awaited order is expected to launch an appeal process in the North Dakota Supreme Court from both sides.

Last year, a nine-person jury found Netherlands-based Greenpeace International, Greenpeace USA and funding arm Greenpeace Fund Inc. liable for defamation and other claims brought by Dallas-based Energy Transfer and subsidiary Dakota Access.

Inserting Diversity

On racially incongruous casting in period dramas:

Readers will note the unilateral nature and casual, practised arrogance of the underlying conceit. The urge to insert diversity, in one direction at least, regardless of incongruity.

As seen, for instance, in the pages of British Vogue, where Ms Hanna Flint, “a mixed-race woman, of British and Tunisian heritage,” expressed her dismay that new adaptations of works by Emily Brontë and Jane Austen have “cast the protagonists as white once again.” As if this were some kind of scandal or transgression, for which apologies and recompense were in order.

Presumably on grounds that it is somehow unfair that the Yorkshire moors of the eighteenth century did not entirely resemble twenty-first century London. Where Ms Flint happens to live.

Apparently, we must embrace “historical inclusivity,” via modish anachronism and jarring racial contrivance.

“Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents last night”

Hey Don, did ya miss the new rules?

Disgraced ex-CNN anchor Don Lemon was arrested late Thursday over the anti-ICE protest that stormed a Minnesota church during Sunday service, according to his attorney.

“Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles, where he was covering the Grammy awards,” Lemon’s attorney Abbe Lowell said in a statement shared with multiple reporters.

Lemon spent the night in jail and is expected to make a first appearance in court sometime Friday, according to Brian Stelter, the chief media analyst for Lemon’s former network.

Carney’s Davos speech

Mark Carney’s speech in Davos, verbatim, and in video.

I informed some people I was with on Tuesday I am starting a new drinking game. Every time I hear an otherwise conservative politician say something nice about Mark Carney, drink.

It turns out that bottle of Scotch I got for Christmas could go pretty quick. The people I was with were conservative politicians. Take that for what you will.

Just The News;

Federal prosecutors on Tuesday served subpoenas to at least five top Minnesota Democrats — including Gov. Tim Walz — as part of the Justice Department’s investigation into the obstruction of ICE and of the Trump administration’s illegal immigration crackdown in the state, U.S. officials confirmed to Just the News.

Beyond the subpoena issued to Walz for allegedly obstructing law enforcement activities, the DOJ also subpoenaed Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her and Hennepin County attorney Mary Moriarty over their alleged anti-ICE actions and obstruction activities, the U.S. officials said.

US Bars Five European Speech Nannies

The State Department announced Tuesday it was barring five Europeans it accused of leading efforts to pressure U.S. tech firms to censor or suppress American viewpoints.

The Europeans, characterized by Secretary of State Marco Rubio as “radical” activists and “weaponized” nongovernmental organizations, fell afoul of a new visa policy announced in May to restrict the entry of foreigners deemed responsible for censorship of protected speech in the United States. […]

The action to bar them from the U.S. is part of a Trump administration campaign against foreign influence over online speech, using immigration law rather than platform regulations or sanctions.

The five Europeans named by Rogers are: Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate; Josephine Ballon and Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, leaders of HateAid, a German organization; Clare Melford, who runs the Global Disinformation Index; and former EU Commissioner Thierry Breton, who was responsible for supervising social media rules.

Is Our Diversities Learing?

Conservative Treehouse;

In a remarkable approach, Secretary Bessent announced during a Fox News interview that a regional targeting effort is now underway that will block anyone who receives public assistance from sending money overseas (remittances to foreign countries). This is not a fee or tax on the remittance, or financial transaction; this is a complete block of their ability to send money overseas. Anyone receiving public assistance will not be able to send money to foreign lands.

Yes, it seems like this is initially going to be subject to the honest admission of the money sender. However, with the IRS reviewing each transfer and cross referencing to public assistance records anyone who attempts to work around this regulation will be subject to federal laws on financial fraud, wire service fraud and potentially money laundering.

The interagency focus will eventually go nationwide, as with the new USAO position that focuses on public assistance fraud; but for now, that focused effort will target Minnesota. Minneapolis will be the beta test for a national rollout.

Finally;

Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan was charged in a two-count federal indictment that alleges she obstructed official Department of Homeland Security removal proceedings and knowingly concealed the man from immigration authorities at a courthouse in April.

Dugan was found guilty of obstructing federal agents and not guilty of concealing an undocumented immigrant from arrest during the courthouse incident.

The jury reached the mixed verdict after deliberating for approximately six hours on Thursday, according to WISN.

Dugan, who pleaded not guilty, faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison. The judge has not yet set a sentencing date.

Wisconsin Republicans threatened Friday to impeach embattled judge Hannah Dugan if she doesn’t resign immediately

If you can find them: @elonmusk just turned on the location spotlight and the entire “Gaza resident” influencer industry & fake IDF soldier industry just imploded.

Turns out the “eyewitness in Rafah living under bombardment” has been live-tweeting from a comfy flat in Islamabad while the only thing exploding is his mum’s pressure cooker.

The “Khan Younis nurse who hasn’t slept in 400 days” is apparently posting between shifts at a call centre in Lahore. Babe, the only IV drip you’ve seen is the chai one.

Congratulations to the “Gaza dad of six hiding in a tent” who’s been rage-sobbing for donations from a rooftop in Dhaka with better Wi-Fi than most of London. Your ‘link in bio’ days are over.

Shout-out to the “Deir al-Balah poet writing by candlelight” who’s actually in Chelyabinsk, Russia, typing manifestos next to a radiator that’s warmer than the entire sob story.
