The Libranos: Power and Politics

Background: CBC has fired marquee host Evan Solomon after the Star reported that he was taking secret commission payments related to art sales involving people he dealt with as a host.

Unlimited Power!

It’s what we want. It’s what we need.

Rob Shaw- He wants a blank cheque to do anything he wants.”

B.C.’s David Eby proposes draconian legislation to respond to Donald Trump

Globe and Mail- Premier Eby, please practise democracy

British Columbia’s NDP government tabled legislation last week that, if enacted as is, would give it sweeping powers to pass regulations without having to bother with the tedious obligation of asking for the blessing of the provincial legislature.

It’s Good To Be King

Alternate title: The Emperor Has No Clothes

National Post- Mark Carney’s not really supposed to be doing anything

Mark Carney may now be Canada’s 24th prime minister, but the unique circumstances of his appointment mean that he technically shouldn’t be allowed to do anything.

No appointments. No new spending or taxes. No foreign policy commitments. Nothing at all that isn’t “routine,” “non-controversial” and “reversible.”

It’s all part of the “caretaker convention,” a longstanding parliamentary tradition which holds that until a prime minister is able to “command the confidence of the House of Commons,” he’s not allowed to wield the full powers of his office.

In fact, he’s not supposed to do almost any of the things Canadians typically associate with their prime minister.

A Carney Con?

Sun- Carney’s carbon tax ‘cut:’ Nothing more than smoke and mirrors

Here’s the truth: Carney didn’t repeal the carbon tax. He didn’t scrap the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, which is the legislation that gives the federal government the power to impose and raise the carbon tax whenever they want. All he did was press pause. The infrastructure is still in place. The federal government still holds the power to reinstate the tax at any time — and raise it to whatever level suits their political needs.

Even the CBC panel isn’t buying it.

If It Wasn’t For Fake “Orders in Council”

Would there be any orders in council at all?

Guy W. Giorno- Whatever this is, it is not an Order in Council. An OiC is made by the GG on advice of Cabinet, not an “I hereby instruct” directive signed by the Prime Minister.

Mike Campbell- Order in Council are signed by the Governor General under the advice of PM and cabinet. Note: Carbon tax law can only be appealed by Parliament – so it is still on the books – but terms can be changed – so PM Carney didn’t repeal the law but changed the rate to zero.

Why are Canadians Mad at Elon Musk?

We’ve long known that many Leftists are mentally ill.  Why else would they vote for policies that destroy their own society?

Here’s the latest illustration of what Trump Derangement Syndrome has driven some Canadians to do. Is this not the equivalent of a child being given a time out in their room and throwing a tantrum?

We also have B.C. Premier David Eby personally attacking one of Elon Musk’s businesses through legislation. The official explanation for this doesn’t ring true. It’s probably illegal for a government to single out and cause harm to specific individuals. Oh wait, the Trudeau government gleefully did it in 2022 by freezing the bank accounts of people who disagreed with them. But that was proved to be illegal, correct?!

While I understand, but don’t agree with, Canadian anger towards President Trump, why on earth is any Canadian angry with Elon Musk about work he is doing for a government of another country; work that doesn’t effect Canadians in any way? Is it simply anger & stupidity by proxy?
