Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born in New York City on August 3, 1926. He fought in the latter stages of WW2 and then seriously pursued a singing career afterwards. In 1949 he was invited by Bob Hope to join him while performing out on the road. Hope suggested that Benedetto simplify his name to Tony Bennett. Soon after a star was born! Here’s an interesting mix of his classic tunes.

The Vancouver Riots: A Police Officer Speaks Out
Though there’s no way to confirm if this came from an actual police officer, the sentiments expressed within this letter ring true.
You’d tell me that the emergency services personnel I speak of are paid to do this job and chose to be there. You’re right. We give a damn about people we’ve never met and property that isn’t ours, that’s why we do what we do. You disgust us.
You’ll sleep soundly in your bed tonight because men and women like me will always be there to deal with your poor choices. You have no idea how fortunate you are, even after we arrest and charge you. Even though you disgust me, if you call for me in the middle of the night I’ll respond. I’ll protect your life and property because it’s right and it’s what I do.

The science is settled
US liberals really are the dumbest creatures on the planet. Guess what these liberals believe the problem with Climate Change is? Go on: think of the most stupid, reality-denying, fact-ignoring, evidence-torturing tosh anyone involved in the media could possibly have to say on the subject.

I present to you a music video highlighting some of the best modern jazz, coupled with an excerpt from Cowboy Bebop, a series you should certainly consider ordering through Netflix.
A Lesson from the Gold Standard
Newton invented the Gold Standard circa 1700. The Gold Standard undoubtedly ranks as one of his greatest achievements given that it became the backbone of the British Empire. The pound was “as good as gold”, as the saying went, and the pound banknote was accepted around the globe as a substitute for gold itself – but not always. The paper-pound was willingly accepted until there was a banking or financial crisis, which meant the quality of the currency and the reliability of banks became questioned.
At those moments – which occurred with surprising frequency – there was a rush to gold because of its safe haven attributes.
Past Head of Ex-Colony Heads Back to the Mother Country
British Columbia’s ex-premier, Gordon Campbell, is reportedly going to become the High Commissioner to Great Britain. Not everyone is pleased.

Reader Tips
Something I only learned of recently is that a potpourri of full-length movies are available for free on YouTube. If you come across any you particularly like, please do let the rest of us know in this or a future Reader Tips. For those in the mood for something more musical in nature, here are a few clips of Mes Aïeux, a terrific group from Québec. The video was shot while they were performing live in Vancouver during the 2010 Olympics.

A Canadian Muslim Woman’s Views on Islam
Today, on the TV show I’m involved with, was a woman from Richmond, BC named Leila El-Khatib. She spoke with host, David Berner about Islam and about the Middle East:
What are your thoughts on what she had to say?
Bad Husband, BAD BAD Husband!
Shame on you for being male.
(On a side note, Dalrock is pretty funny for those of you who are looking for lighter fare).
The Decline And Fall Of The American Empire
Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
AP News, June 22nd – The economy’s continuing struggles aren’t just confounding ordinary Americans. They’ve also stumped the head of the Federal Reserve. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told reporters Wednesday that the central bank had been caught off guard by recent signs of deterioration in the economy. And he said the troubles could continue into next year.
Fox Business, June 22nd – U.S. debt is forecast to soar to 70% of the country’s annual economic output — the highest share since shortly after the end of World War II — by the end of this year, according to a report by the Congressional Budget Office.

Free Geert Wilders!
Dutch populist politician Geert Wilders was acquitted of inciting hatred of Muslims in a court ruling on Thursday that may strengthen his political influence and exacerbate tensions over immigration policy.
[…]
The Amsterdam court had used a Supreme Court ruling — that an offensive statement about someone’s religion was not a criminal offence — as the basis of its decision, leading to acquittal, the judge said.
Unusually, the prosecution team had also asked for an acquittal, arguing that politicians have the right to comment on problem issues and that Wilders was not trying to foment violence or division.

Fans of photography will find this short documentary very interesting. Scott Schumann is a photographer & blogger from New York City. His blog, The Sartorialist, focuses on how people present themselves out in public. As an avid photographer myself, I wish I had the nerve to go up to people like he does but usually am not so forward.
