A column by Heather Mallick on July 28 contained a number of inaccurate statements about the well-known British journalist and author Melanie Phillips.
Not any more, it don’t.
h/t BCF, who saved a copy.

Surprised.
Way to go TorStar, that’s one in a row.
We saw nothing, right?
Any newspaper worth its moral salt would have fired her. But then again, I used “moral salt” and “newspaper” in the same sentence.
“I get the…sensation…that she is reacting to some deeply felt psychic wound.”
“She didn’t have the moral fibre to prevent herself deteriorating into a sick caricature.”
Both of these accusations are perfect descriptions of Mallick herself.
I noticed that the Tor Star did not allow comments on the apology. Too bad.
Did anyone seriously expect anything else from Mallick.
Heather Malice has been known for years to just “make stuff up”. Nothing new.
She has been fired from previous organizations. Perhaps that same reality will become true before year’s end. We can only hope.
@EBD: It’s called projection.
“Defamatory” is perhaps a strong word. But “clueless” certainly isn’t.
Jesus that’s one hell of an apology. I am absolutely not a fan of the Star but I have to give them props for cutting through the crap on that one.
“The defamatory article has been removed from our website.”
You don’t see that too often.
The Guardian recently ran a commentisfree article by Roz Kaverney (a transgendered feminist) attempting to blacken Melanie Phillip’s name by making her responsible for Breivik’s murders. I pointed out that this was wrong and potentially libelous and suggested the Guardian took the article down until they could run it past its lawyers. My suggestion was removed from the thread, the article remained.

The Star should probably keep that apology handy, in fill-in-the-blank form.
I suspect the Star received a letter from a well known Toronto law firm containing a point-by-point rebuttal of Ms. Mallick’s column with citations and footnotes. It more than likely also noted that unless the above mentioned apology was printed verbatim they would be seeking millions of dollars in damages.
I’m surprised this doesn’t happen after most of Mallick’s columns.
I absolutely loath reading Mallick’s writings… but I do so because she is the poster child for the current state of leftist thought, and the true window into the progressive Liberal soul. Where other leftists, Liberals and progressives may – on occasion, be tempered in expressing their opinions, Mallick shows no such adult contraints and vomits her opinion upon the pages to whatever media she can prostitute herself. She reprsents the truth behind the leftist facade and it is ugly. But one must know thier enemy to fight them. So I gag and choke as I read.
I guess Mallick speaks to the clientele who read the TorStar otherwise she’d be fired.
Some papers should go straight from the presses to the dumpster.
Sue!! for as much as you can get
Dont accept a simple apology or swept under the rug. The only way to put an end to crap from people like mallick. Hit where it hurts, the pocket book.
This is like the recent Global TV cut & paste trash of conservative MP Shelly Glover, It took over 5months for an apology, take them to court.
Like that arch subversive hypocrite, Obama, who wins the prize for nastiness and lies about his political opponents, while calling for more “politesse”, Mallick, after savaging the dignified Melanie Phillips in a bloody hatchet job, appeals for civility: “. . . could we all please be kinder to each other . . .?”
This woman is a menace and an absolute disgrace. She’s worried about all the “women-hating” on the internet? As far as this Melanie Phillips-loving woman’s concerned, Mallick could solve part of that particular problem by getting the hell out of the way. WHAT a piece of work that woman is!
As many have pointed out here, Mallick’s utter malice towards Phillips couldn’t be more off the mark. Indeed, Mallick’s venomous words perfectly describe the person who wrote them: pure projection. I hope that the snooty Star has experienced a good shock over this: the powers that be at that rag should be seriously considering dumping this unprofessional, altogether unhinged harridan.
Even the CBC, which sets very high standards for stuoidity, moral cowardice and slime journalism fired her crotchy butt out the door.
So The Star still hasn’t yet risen to the extraordinarily low standards of the CBC and fired what everyone except Judy Rebbick knows is a terminally angry, embittered, morally corrupted excuse for a journalist, a “writer” who has a track record of drive by slime stories, inventing “facts” and producing bile fomented personal attacks on innocent people. A perfect little post midern journalist and a shining example for feminism to admire.
And she looks like she has chased a lot of parked cars and won the race.
Good on The Star for keeping her employed. We know where your standards are by the Staff you keep on the payroll.
BRYANR, at Melanie Phillips’s web site:
“The Toronto Star has agreed to pay my legal costs in full. The newspaper has also agreed to make a donation to a charity of my choice in lieu of damages.”
Mallick is a troll.
She is not looking(not being used also) to make people think, she and The Star are looking to stir up emotion. Bad emotions, ones that will solidify the Stars base readers.
Heather the Hater lie… shocker
Thanks Lookout i missed that part.
But you what accepting legal cost & a charitable donation is like our courts in Canada a slap on the wrist, Hit em Hard till it hurts And not only them Mallick too.
I can’t help but get a mental image of Heather in caricature (a female Fritz the Cat) curled up in a ball licking her psychic wounds.
I see, so now we have to feel the proper emotion when a particular event is reported.
The reporter MUST express that emotion clearly,or be considered, what,?
Read the news online today; bombings in Iraq, starvation of millions in the Horn of Africa, riots and looting and murder in England, bombings and murders in Afghanistan, slaughter in the streets of Syria, and Li-Lo showed up for an interview wearing a pair of dirty shorts.
On which of these stories should I feel “horror”?
Does anyone, except the odd mentally deranged person, feel anything BUT “horror”? Is “disgust” a strong enough feeling, how about “discomfort”,is that feeling okay,or is it not strong enough?
Are we supposed to merely feel “horror” or must we “reel in horror”,as many pundits would have us do? What exactly does “reel” mean, do we have to spin in circles and fall down to properly express our horror? Is “shock” okay,or should we faint to show the proper sensitivity to any given situation.
And,what if a victim is someone we truly despise, must we dredge up feelings that aren’t real for public consumption?
Mallick is, imho, mentally ill,she needs the care of a good psychiatrist. The woman has no center of moral gravity, just the anger and rage of a person on the edge of a mental breakdown.Someone should remove all the pointed objects from her house.
She should retire from the “profession”,and take up work where she’ll have less opportunity to make a complete fool of herself.
I know a farmer that could use someone to shovel out his horse barn,Mallick would be a natural for this job.
What a bag
Not much of an apology. Firing heather malick would be more fitting an apology.
Note that the so-called apology says, “The Star and Ms. Mallick regret the errors”. That’s more than a bit disingenuous; what Mallick wrote was consciously and deliberately said, and was not an “error”. An error would be saying something that you weren’t aware was incorrect; since Phillip’s original words were very clear, and Mallick obviously read them, she [Mallick] had to be aware that there was no factual basis for her column. That falls into the category of a lie, not an error.
And, why is there no kind of punishment noted? Anyplace I’ve ever worked (of course, I realize that jobs like hauling sacks of flour or power-washing industrial equipment are far different than being a journalist /sarc off) if an employee committed a foul-up as notable as Mallick’s, there would usually be a pink slip forthcoming – certainly a demotion and/or pay cut. Failure to impose any kind of consequences implies that the Star doesn’t really believe anything wrong occurred.
heather mallick is like the low class supermkt tabloids. Cheap paper, articles bordering on fantasy, chock full of sleazy innuendos bordering on slander, little substance, negligable reason.
But they sell!!…the Star’s Bottom Line.

From Heather “the Hater”, I gather she shouldn’t eat her own cooking…..”3:00 am … food poisoning”.
Then again maybe she SHOULD!
I can’t wait to see which charity Phillips chooses.
One day, Mallick and the Star are going to be bankrupt from stuff like this. The mills of Themis grind slowly, but they grind exceeding fine, if I may adapt the quote.
Malice-flour. I can hardly wait.
DMorris, Heather wouldn’t know which end of the shovel to hold. Literally unfit to shovel sh1t from one place to another.
What better way to advance your career — and to gain the attention of the board of directors — than to involve your employer in a law suit?
Mel says they gotta donate to a charity of ‘her choice’ was it me, I’d make them give it to the NRA
The Star frequently reaches heights of sanctimonious hypocrisy unknown to other media outlets.
For example, they have published two feature articles in the last few months deploring the evils of excessive excecutive compensation in failing firms. Neither mentioned the fact that Robert Prichard, former CEO, was given a parting gift of $11.4 million for driving Torstar Corporation stock values into the ground.
Who defends this hypocrisy? Kathy English, the paper’s “Public Editor” whose columns continue to extol the Star’s moral superiority and unassailable integrity.
Shockingly, the Ontario Press Council sees no problems with the Star knowingly publishing incorrect factual information.
Make the douche donate to the Republican Party..or to Conservative Party here in Canada.I can feel the pain of the teeth-clench as that cheque is written!
Employing Mallick is charity; no one does it because they like her work.
So when the Star saw the lawsuit express coming, they threw her under the bus (deservedly.)
She’ll have slinked back to her hovel by November…her departure from the Star unremarked upon.
When you make your living trashing people because of political views. The eventualpay back becomes Elephant sized.
It also twists the person doing the cut upjob for life.
“The column made reference to …(her target de jour)… in an entirely misleading and inappropriate manner.”
…and this is different from every article Heather Malice writes in what way?
But, but I thought it wasn’t libel/hate/racist/xenophobic if a neurotic left wing harridan says it – what gives? Isn’t anyone following the ever changing lib-left politically corrected speech protocol anymore?
This is a great test for The Star.
Is it a reputable newspaper that acts on principle? Or not?
The Star will answer that question by whether it keeps this loathsome person on the payroll.
What were the editors doing when Mallice’s copy flashed across their computer screen??? Appalling! The editors were asleep at the switch.
The sooner the Red Star gaspes it’s last breath the better.
bverwey
I’d never heard of her until she did her despicable Sarah Palin smear, and now this. Twat.
dmorris, I’m afraid you’re right. Mallick is, quite literally, being used as a geek. She’s wallowing publicly in malignant insanity so that Star punters can be titillated by her depravity. She might as well be biting the heads off chickens or eating dog turds off the sidewalk for a living. The fact that she clearly enjoys the taste of the dogturds doesn’t change the immoral and exploitive nature of what’s being done to her.
How long before that twit is finally fired and sued for millions and millions for defamation? And when will she finally be admitted to a closed asylum and kept there for the rest of her natural days?
