To ease you into tonight’s Tips, here’s a lovely little summery song by Toronto’s Cowboy Junkies called A Horse In The Country.

After America
Ed Driscoll interviews Mark Steyn;
Mark discusses what H.G. Wells’ Victorian-era Time Traveler would think about life amongst the “Eloi” of the 21st century. He offers his take on Bloomberg.com’s presumably unintentionally hilarious headline yesterday, “Geithner Says European Nations Must Get ‘Fiscal House’ in Order.” And he’ll answer the question that’s been on Thomas Friedman’s mind in recent weeks — “Can Greeks Become Germans?”
All this and much more of the most fun you’ll have contemplating the Spenglerian collapse of a nation near you. (And watch this space for a transcript of the interview, hopefully online tomorrow.)

Update: “There are reports on Twitter of people carrying machetes in Notting Hill and Balham.”
I’ll bet they’re glad they have all those cameras.
Is There Nothing That Obama Can’t Do?
Definition of incompetence.
More reaction….“He was a half hour late. His head turned from side to side as if he were attending a tennis match. He practically never looked in the camera, as if he were averting our gaze. And those were the strong parts of President Obama’s disastrous speech. It was a bit like a slow-motion car crash. After a while, one stopped listening to the blather and simply watched the stock ticker go down and down. And down some more.”

Hashtag Of The Entitlement Generation
The stuff they don’t tell you at the CBC;
For some time now, residents of some US cities have noted occasional incidents of seemingly random, racially motivated violence in which young Black males are involved. The hot weather and bad economy seem to be combining to generate a small but possibly significant uptick this year. The national media are doing their best to avoid looking too closely at this disturbing phenomenon, and perhaps for good reason. What the United States doesn’t need is a media firestorm that triggers copycat violence.
Oh, really? When did the risk of “copycat violence” ever stop them before?
Never, that’s when. They “avoid looking” because the phenomenon brutalizes the mainstream media default setting of “white oppressor, black victim” more than it does their hapless targets. Some things are just too uncomfortable to acknowledge.

The Sound Of Settled Science
They must have choked on every word – BBC;
Scientists say current concerns over a tipping point in the disappearance of Arctic sea ice may be misplaced.
Danish researchers analysed ancient pieces of driftwood in north Greenland which they say is an accurate way to measure the extent of ancient ice loss.
Writing in the journal Science, the team found evidence that ice levels were about 50% lower 5,000 years ago.
They say changes to wind systems can slow down the rate of melting.
They argue, therefore, that a tipping point under current scenarios is unlikely.
While modern observations by ship and by satellite give us a very accurate picture of the recent state of the ice, historic information is limited. The ice comes and goes without leaving a permanent record.

The Extraordinary Collapse of Jatropha as a Global Biofuel;
By 2008, Jatropha had already been planted over an estimated 900000 ha globally of which an overwhelming 85% was in Asia, 13% in Africa and the rest in Latin America, and by 2015 Jatropha is expected to be planted on 12.8 million ha worldwide.

It appears to be an extreme case of a well intentioned top down climate mitigation approach, undertaken without adequate preparation and ignoring conflict of interest, and adopted in good faith by other countries, gone awry bringing misery to millions of poorest people across the world. And it happened because the principle of “due diligence” before taking up large ventures was ignored everywhere.
But wait! There’s more!
As an immediate step an international body like the FAO may have to intervene…

Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
CBS News, August 2011 – Credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s says it has downgraded the United States’ credit rating for the first time in the history of the ratings. […] The credit agency said late Friday that it is making the move because the deficit reduction plan passed by Congress on Tuesday did not go far enough to stabilize the country’s debt situation and that the policymaking is not stable or effective as needed to address the current economic challenge.
Globe Investor, May 2011 – The province joined an elite club of provinces on Tuesday when Standard & Poor’s upgraded its debt rating to triple-A […] Rather than quickly spending its newly-earned wealth, the provincial government has put its tax revenue toward paying the bills. S&P gave special credit to Saskatchewan for its “low-and-declining debt burden.”
