Operation Empty Chair

Nile Gardner;

One voice in Washington that has been remarkably absent from this week’s Syria debate has been that of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The frontrunner for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination, Mrs. Clinton hasn’t said anything at all about President Obama’s plans for military strikes against the dictatorship in Damascus. As someone who dominated the US foreign policy landscape over the past four years, Clinton’s silence on Syria is striking. What explains this?

In a report about the gas massacre in Syria, BBC uses photo taken ten years ago in Iraq.

Photographer Marco di Lauro said he nearly “fell off his chair” when he saw the image being used…The picture, which was actually taken on March 27, 2003, shows a young Iraqi child jumping over dozens of white body bags containing skeletons found in a desert south of Baghdad. It was posted on the BBC news website today under the heading “Syria massacre in Houla condemned as outrage grows”.

The Tolerant Left

Daily Smug;

Obama supporter and prominent anti-fracking loon, Vera Scroggins is also a public advocate for parental pedophilia. Scroggins made comments on a Yahoo group called “Peacelist”, a group that is “dedicated to the advancement of the human species by restoring its natural peacefulness, through the means of affectionate parenting and sexual freedom”.

Vera’s hairline is more like a “Vern’s”. Just sayin’. (h/t)

Great Moments in Socialism

Any Canadian who follows politics is well aware that a few times each year the Canadian Centre for Policy Failure Alternatives comes out with some new “paper” insisting that minimum wages across the country need to be dramatically raised to a “livable wage”. This then causes politicians and business leaders to duck for cover for a few weeks until the PR campaign gets pushed out of the news cycle.
Such has been the case in America this past week. In a well coordinated campaign, organized by the militant SEIU, their more than willing comrades in the media, have done their best to paint a bleak picture for restaurant workers everywhere.
Bill O’Reilly shares some personal thoughts on the matter.
Update: Here’s a brief mathematical analysis of the situation.   h/t Maureen

John Diefenbaker’s Vision of Canada

As Leader of the Opposition from 1963 to 1967, and as a backbencher until his death on Aug. 16 1979, the MP from Prince Albert vigorously opposed just about every aspect of the new national identity that was being forged.
When Diefenbaker saw the Red Ensign replaced by the Maple Leaf flag, he saw a century of Canada’s history being erased. When he saw Canada being re-defined, first as two nations and later as a collection of many groups defined by their ethnicity, he saw Confederation being dismantled.

Already looking distinctly tall in the saddle:

President Obama’s new man in London, Matthew Barzun, has barely been in the country a week, and he’s already lecturing Britain on staying in the EU.  Barzun, whose main qualification for the job is his past role as chief fundraiser for Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign…
