This Is Not Your Grandma’s Humane Society

A highly infectious dog flu that has spread rapidly across Asia and parts of the U.S. has made its way into Canada.
Two dogs in Essex County, Ontario, have H3N2 canine influenza, according to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, and two others are showing symptoms though the infection has not been confirmed in those canines.
Officials said the dogs were imported from South Korea, through the U.S. and were showing signs of respiratory disease the day after they arrived when they were examined by a veterinarian.

That’s right. South Korea — because America doesn’t have enough unwanted pets.
More from the “rescue group” website;

The adoption fee for dogs received from China is $625.00 and for the Spanish galgos, the fee is $700.00.

Gonadectomy effects on the risk of immune disorders in the dog

The data underscore the importance of sex steroids on immune function emphasizing a role of these hormones on tissue self-recognition. Neutering is critically important for population control, reduction of reproductive disorders, and offers convenience for owners. Despite these advantages, the analyses of the present study suggest that neutering is associated with increased risk for certain autoimmune disorders and underscore the need for owners to consult with their veterinary practitioner prior to neutering to evaluate possible benefits and risks associated with such a procedure.

Before the fake Turkish Golden Retriever scam

…was the Asian dog meat scam that introduced a deadly canine flu into America last year. Just this month, the San Diego Humane Society imported yet another plane load of dogs from Korea for resale. San Diego. California. The same California that claims to have a massive overpopulation of dogs in their shelters when they ship dogs north to Oregon, Washington, Utah and Canada is importing dogs from Korea. Not just any dogs. Puppies.

Reader Tips (And Blog Notes)

I’ll be hitting the road early tomorrow morning for Seattle-Portland dog shows, and will be offline for much of the next two weeks. Lance and company will hold down the fort as best they can, and I should be checking in from time to time, but expect posting to slow down.
It’s supposed to be -31C (windchill -43C) tomorrow at 4am when I finish loading up the van. I’m told we do this because it’s fun.
The selection for the evening — Life is a Highway, (Rascal Flatts version).

Blog Notes

I’m back from our annual trek to Montgomery County Kennel Club near Blue Bell, PA, and still catching up on both the news and my energy levels.

We did well, with all the dogs we showed consistently in the ribbons. The weekend highlights: Homebred AmCh.Destineez Wild Blue Yonder was Best of Breed at Hatboro and Best of Opposite Sex at the National Specialty, while his brother AmCanGrandCh.Minuteman Justified (pictured above) took two awards of merit and Select Dog at the National Specialty on Sunday.
I’ll post more photos a I find them, and blogging should be ramping back up to near normal levels by tomorrow. Thanks for your patience with this canine obsession that takes me away so frequently, and to Lance et al for holding down the fort!

Reader Tips (And Blog Notes)

As you might have surmised, I’ve been on the road for the last two weeks on a trip that took us to the Ottawa area via upstate New York, with only intermittent internet and virtually no access to the news (the original owners of our new dog truck having disconnected the speakers in some manner that defies all logical solutions.)

We won a lot.

In fact, we won pretty much everything available in Mini Schnauzers.

It’ll take a day or two to get back up to speed. In the meantime, here’s your tips thread for tonight. Have at ‘er.

The Sound Of Settled Science

[T]he ancient origins of an animal that is an honorary member of many human families has remained in doubt: We still don’t know where dogs came from.
A group of scientists who are in the middle of a grand examination of canine fossils and modern DNA proposed Thursday to turn the whole conversation on its head.
Suppose dogs didn’t evolve in one place, they suggested, but two. What if domestication of ancient wolves happened in both Asia and Europe — different wolves, different people?

Or even more likely, in several places, by many different peoples.

We left Delisle last Tuesday afternoon, drove to Long Beach, showed for three days and arrived back home tonight at around 8pm. With a bad cold and most of it done in 95-105f heat. It’s time to get some rest.
