Government Sucks

Richard Anderson at The Gods of the Copybook headings:

…
Meeting in the leafy and pleasant suburb of Oakville will be two groups trapped in nostalgia and afraid of the future. The economic structure of the auto industry has changed forever. A few hundred millions in subsidies may purchase some votes for the governing party, but it cannot change the underlying reality. The billions which the taxpayers of Canada pour into the bottomless pit of aboriginal affairs will not make real the dream of Turtle Island. The money goes we know not where, we know only that the Chief’s driveway is always paved and his home well heated.
Government will not solve the problems it helped create. Instead it preserves those problems…
Big government is ultimately a Big Lie that breeds smaller ones. Among the most pernicious of those lies is that the state can stop the clock.

Why Is There Always A Big Screen TV?

Lawrence Martin;

Back in the days of Jean Chrétien’s government, I recall talking to a very senior player about the issue of accountability on first nation reserves. The Canadian Alliance was probing the matter, and there were allegations, nothing too specific, about spending abuses. Money disappearing down a black hole, that kind of thing.
Raising it with the Chrétien official, I recall being surprised when he said there was a basis for many of the allegations. It was a potentially a major scandal, he said. So why, I asked, was no one probing it? Too sensitive, he said. “We’d be accused of racism.”

That – and the Liberal Party contributions would’ve dried up.

This Is Awkward

Paul Watson — founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society — has been sued by Ady Gil … who claims he owned the famous Ady Gil ship featured on “Whale Wars.” Gil claims he let Watson’s organization use his boat, so long as they took care of it.
In his suit, filed yesterday in L.A. County Superior Court, Gil says his vessel was rammed by a Japanese whaling ship in 2010 … and suffered damage to the nose … but the damage was repairable.
According to Gil, Watson saw the collision as an opportunity to spin the incident into a major publicity and money maker for his organization … so instead of towing the boat to port for repairs, he secretly gave an order to sink the ship “under the cover of darkness” … and blamed the Japanese.

I admit to being disappointed. I’d long admired the Japanese for that.

A Profile in Incompetency: Carolyn Bennett, MP

CarolynBennettMP.jpg
Reported by Sun News: “…There’s no money mismanaged. There’s no money missing.” – Carolyn Bennett MP, Liberal Aboriginal Affairs critic on the Attawapiskat audit.
Carolyn Bennett is supposed to be looking out for Canadian taxpayers as well as looking out for the best interests of the First Nations people of Canada. By taking the stance that she has, she has FAILED BOTH constituencies! And it doesn’t seem to bother her at all.
Update: Ms. Bennett appears in Ezra Levant’s latest exposé on the corruption @ 5:25.

Fisheries And Oceans Stripped of Jurisdiction Over Gravel Pits

Along with farm fields and highway ditches. Under Bill C-45;

…RMs won’t have to seek Transport Canada’s permission to replace old bridges with culverts (steel pipes).
The switch cuts the cost of construction by about two-thirds, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars on each project.
John Lawson was reeve of the RM of Meadow Lake when it rebuilt a crossing on Alcott Creek that served a prime logging area. A larger culvert was installed, and the road modified.
Lawson considers the approval process that was required for that project an unnecessary burden and delay.
“Unless you were into doing a whole bunch of canoeing in water that’s less than a foot deep, and willing to cross about 125 beaver dams per kilometre you wouldn’t be doing too much navigation in that creek,” Lawson said.
