Pfizer-BioNTech is postponing its rolling application to the Food and Drug Administration to expand the use of its two-dose Covid-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to 4 years.
The move means that vaccines for this age group will not be available in the coming weeks, a setback for parents eager to vaccinate their young children.
More: FDA and Pfizer postpone review of #covid19 vaccine for kids under 5 to await three-dose data (back to the drawing board), noting additional findings from ongoing clinical trial.

“When it comes to the broader demonstrations we've seen in Ottawa and Quebec City and all across the country, I will abstain from the kind of generalizations that were heard these last few days,”, Quebec Liberal MP Joël Lightbound said.

The federal government needs to quickly offer a road map for the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, according to Quebec Liberal MP Joël Lightbound, citing mental health concerns from pediatricians and the parents of depressed children, and the inability of many to earn a living from a “MacBook at their cottage.”
Lightbound, MP for Louis-Hébert, chair of the industry committee and the Quebec Liberal caucus, and a former parliamentary secretary to the finance minister, said the Liberal government has changed in policy and in tone since last year’s election campaign and appears unwilling to adapt to the evolution of the pandemic.
“Now the approach stigmatizes people and divides people,” he told reporters this morning, pointing to the loosening of restrictions in European countries with lower vaccination rates than Canada.
Lightbound said he raised his concerns in caucus to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but owes it to constituents to publicly voice his concerns. He said other Liberal MPs share his concerns and that the party has historically been “open for dissent and different opinions.”
Lightbound wants the federal government to: provide “quantifiable parameters” for current measures such as the threshold for hospitalization publish studies and scientific advice underpinning current measures start negotiating with the provinces on the Canada Health Transfer, calling the federal position “hard to understand” in terms of the timing of negotiations
Lightbound also said demonstrators causing disruption and gridlock in Ottawa need to move, but their concerns need to be addressed.

There Goes The Narrative
Ontario needs to “reassess the value” of the COVID-19 vaccine passport system in the coming weeks to decide if it should be ended, the province’s top doctor says.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kieran Moore made the comment on Thursday, saying while the COVID-19 vaccine offers significant protection against severe disease, two doses doesn’t do much to limit the spread of transmission.
“The vaccine isn’t providing significant benefit at two doses against the risk of transmission, as compared to someone unvaccinated,” Moore said. “We have to reassess the value of the passports in the coming weeks and months.”
I took a final screencap from the SaskHealth dashboard on February 1st. It’s why the desk doctors at SaskHealth were deep-sixing the “new case by vaccination status” breakdowns all through January.

Scott Moe knows this and is finally saying so (to his credit) — and Ryan Meile knows this. Which is why Meile never cites the data when he states Moe is “lying about the data”. The media doesn’t cite the data when they trot out their favourite NDP mouthpieces knowing they’ll parrot Meile’s accusations. What a pathetic clown world we live in.
The passports should be the first to go. First the lockdowns, and now the passport policy has punished the same small businesses again and again and again, and it’s simply untenable.

Passport To Nowhere
In at least three provinces lately, Canadians who are double-vaccinated have been more likely to test positive for COVID than the unvaccinated, a fact that has been seized on by anti-vaccination activists as supposed evidence the shots don’t work.
On Monday in Alberta , for instance, 89 in 100,000 people who had received two doses of vaccine tested positive for the coronavirus, compared to 68 in 100,000 of those who have so far avoided vaccination.
But experts say the trend probably stems from statistical “biases” — the nature of the people who have been getting tested and who most frequently were exposed to the virus — and definitely not some strange quirk of immunization. […]
“It’s curious,” admits Dr. Mark Loeb, an infectious-disease doctor and professor at McMaster University. “The first thing for me that comes to mind is, I don’t see any biological explanation for this. I don’t think that makes sense.”
The “confusing” trend can be logically explained but “it behooves us not to hide from these data or to minimize them, but instead to wrestle with them,” says University of Ottawa epidemiologist Raywat Deonandan.
77% of yesterday’s new cases in Saskatchewan were among the fully vaccinated, who make up about 74% of the population. Yes, it’s probably skewed by the fact that the unvaccinated are less likely to seek out testing and be added to the official government count, unless they’re truly sick. But that’s always been the case, and the shift in relative percentages have been moving steadily toward equilibrium just the same.
The passport mandate is logically unsustainable and scientifically unsound, and judging by the recent signals, the Saskatchewan government knows it.

Justin Trudeau is triple vaccinated with a product so effective that he has mandated cross-border truckers to take it in order they not become infected and transmit the virus — while isolating at home because he’s afraid he has caught the virus and may transmit it to others.

Sweden has decided against recommending COVID vaccines for kids aged 5-11, the Health Agency said on Thursday, arguing that the benefits did not outweigh the risks.
“With the knowledge we have today, with a low risk for serious disease for kids, we don’t see any clear benefit with vaccinating them,” Health Agency official Britta Bjorkholm told a news conference.

CDC Study: Natural immunity with or without vaccine provided robust protection against hospitalization in the age of delta.
By natural immunity, they mean those who have been infected and recovered from Covid.
Boosters and Omicron
More words of wisdom from virologist Geert Vanden Bossche regarding the efficacy of booster shots and the potential hazards of future mass vaccination for Omicron.
“[If we mass vaccinate for Omicron] we end up with a situation where the antibodies can still bind to that receptor binding site, but it has no effect because the virus no longer uses the previous receptor…it will use another domain….We end up with a virus that strongly binds antibodies but the antibodies cannot neutralize the virus…. and that is a recipe for Antibody Dependent Enhancement.”

The Magical 14 Days to Efficacy
Joel Smalley uncovers some statistical slight of hand in the Alberta database.
Alberta just inadvertently confessed to fiddling the COVID vaccination stats.
More than half the newly vaccinated deaths were dumped in the unvaccinated.
el gato malo adds his two cents to this discovery.
in short, the issue goes like this:
there is a 2 week window of immune suppression post vaccination. it roughly doubled the base rate chance of healthy people getting covid back before even delta. (it’s likely far worse now given omicron and OAS issues) this has been demonstrated in trials.
In related news eugyppius has some new data out of the UK government files regarding the “efficacy” of the boosters.
In fact, the UKHSA have given us a great gift, in that they finally provide separate case and severe outcome statistics for the triple-vaccinated and the double vaccinated, allowing us to compare rates across all three groups.

And in case anyone missed it the British Medical Journal is pissed.
Narrative Fatigue
Remember when you were around 40 times more likely to be hospitalized with Covid if you were unvaxxed? Or around 15 times more likely to get Covid?
It’s remarkable how little time it took for these ratios to head for the basement. Any bets on how long it will be until the fully vaxxed are more likely to acquire Covid or be hospitalized than unvaxxed?
This sure doesn’t sound like the results one should expect from an allegedly 98% effective product. But I’m sure the situation will be measurably improved by allowing only 250 people to attend a Jets game.

The British Medical Journal, Editorial
In the pages of The BMJ a decade ago, in the middle of a different pandemic, it came to light that governments around the world had spent billions stockpiling antivirals for influenza that had not been shown to reduce the risk of complications, hospital admissions, or death. The majority of trials that underpinned regulatory approval and government stockpiling of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) were sponsored by the manufacturer; most were unpublished, those that were published were ghostwritten by writers paid by the manufacturer, the people listed as principal authors lacked access to the raw data, and academics who requested access to the data for independent analysis were denied.
The Tamiflu saga heralded a decade of unprecedented attention to the importance of sharing clinical trial data. Public battles for drug company data, transparency campaigns with thousands of signatures, strengthened journal data sharing requirements, explicit commitments from companies to share data, new data access website portals, and landmark transparency policies from medicines regulators all promised a new era in data transparency.
Progress was made, but clearly not enough. The errors of the last pandemic are being repeated. Memories are short. Today, despite the global rollout of covid-19 vaccines and treatments, the anonymised participant level data underlying the trials for these new products remain inaccessible to doctors, researchers, and the public—and are likely to remain that way for years to come. This is morally indefensible for all trials, but especially for those involving major public health interventions.
Pfizer’s pivotal covid vaccine trial was funded by the company and designed, run, analysed, and authored by Pfizer employees. The company and the contract research organisations that carried out the trial hold all the data. And Pfizer has indicated that it will not begin entertaining requests for trial data until May 2025, 24 months after the primary study completion date, which is listed on ClinicalTrials.gov as 15 May 2023 (NCT04368728).
The lack of access to data is consistent across vaccine manufacturers. Moderna says data “may be available … with publication of the final study results in 2022.” Datasets will be available “upon request and subject to review once the trial is complete,” which has an estimated primary completion date of 27 October 2022 (NCT04470427).
As of 31 December 2021, AstraZeneca may be ready to entertain requests for data from several of its large phase III trials. But actually obtaining data could be slow going. As its website explains, “timelines vary per request and can take up to a year upon full submission of the request.”
Underlying data for covid-19 therapeutics are similarly hard to find.
Read it all.
Tangentially related: Saskatchewan’s new cases by vaccination status numbers are back up at SaskHealth. I’m told the problems with cleaning up this database aren’t completely resolved, but the latest information should be accurate.
January 20th: “Of the 1,158 new cases reported today, 221 were unvaccinated or fewer than 21 days after their first dose, 57 had received their first dose or were less than 21 days from their second dose, 637 were fully vaccinated (more than 14 days since their second dose) and 243 were fully vaccinated and more than 14 days from receiving their booster dose”.
Well, that’s more like it. And as suspected, the trends defy the narrative that vaccine passports are necessary to slow transmission of the virus. This outrageous policy of scapegoating citizens, many of whom have naturally acquired immunity, must go and soon, because the passport policy picks winners and losers. Locally owned restaurants, bars and gyms are once again paying the price while big box chains like Costco carry on business as usual. And for no measurable benefit. That’s simply unsustainable.
